Route 17, also known as Chief Peguis Trail, is a short at-grade expressway in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The highway connects Routes 52 (Main Street) and 42 (Henderson Highway). It is the shortest and lowest numbered city route, being only about 1.5 km (about 1 mile) long. Despite its short length, the speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph). The roadway was opened on October 19, 1990, and officially named the Chief Peguis Trail on November 1, 1991.[1]
While Chief Peguis Trail is currently very short, there are plans to expand it, likely as an expressway. It is proposed that the route will be extended west to connect with Routes 180 (McPhillips Street) and 90 (Brookside Blvd.)[2] To the east it would be extended to Highway 59 (Route 20/Lagimodiere Blvd.), and potentially farther to connect with an extended Plessis Road. In the 2007 Winnipeg Preliminary Capital Budget, $34.8 million is forecast over the next three years to complete the extension from Henderson Highway to Lagimodiere Blvd. A total of $1.3 million is set aside in the 2007 budget itself.[3]
Chief Peguis Trail crosses the Red River. The bridge over the river is called the Kildonan Settlers Bridge, and features names of the many settlers of the area on each street light.
