Located in the Slocan Valley, Winlaw is a small unincorporated area famous for its liberal attitudes. It is often referred to humorously as "Planet Winlaw".
The area has been the home to First Nations, draft dodgers and Doukhobours.
Winlaw is generally thought to include any region in the Slocan Valley with the first three digits "226" in the phone number, and located geographically between the Threads Guild and the former Roberts Restaurant (though official boundaries differ).

Winlaw consists of the Cedar Creek Cafe (formerly the "Hungry Wolf" and the "Duck Stop"), Winlaw Mini-Mart, Spicer Center, Sleep is for Sissies Cafe, Winlaw Elementary School, Earth Spirit Metaphysical Books, Four Season's Greenhouse, Fominoff's Deli, Jennie's Gardens, Gaia Tree Whole Foods (featuring organic foods and produce, much grown locally) and a number of other independent businesses. The area also has a post office, fire department, ambulance station and golf course.
