Wingate University was founded by the North Carolina Baptist Association in 1896 as Wingate College, an independent, co-educational institution and became a four-year college in 1977.
Today, Wingate University is a liberal arts university that offers more than 40 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, education, fine arts, music and sport sciences. It also offers seven pre-professional programs. Graduate degrees are awarded in business and education. A doctorate in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) is also awarded. In addition to academics, Wingate student-athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division II sports. Wingate's mascot is the Bulldog.
Wingate University advertises itself as “The Premier Small Private University in North Carolina” and is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its mission is to prepare students to become enlightened productive citizens by providing a high quality education in Judeo-Christian heritage.
Wingate University, with approximately 2,000 students, is located in Wingate, Union County, North Carolina, U.S. on a 425-acre campus twenty miles east of Charlotte, North Carolina On November 15, 2007, the Wingate University broke official ties with the North Carolina State Baptist Convention however; “unofficial” ties still exist between Wingate University and the North Carolina Baptist Convention.
Wingate University School of Pharmacy opened its doors to applicants in 2002, with the charter class beginning its program of study in August 2003. The charter class graduated from Wingate University on May 12, 2007. The Wingate University School of Pharmacy is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). The charter class had a 100% passing rate on the NAPLEX.
In 2006, U.S. News & World Report ranked Wingate #19 out of 53 colleges in the "Southern Comprehensive Colleges-Bachelor's" category[1].
