Wincanton was founded in 1925, as Wincanton Transport & Engineering Ltd, a subsidiary of West Surrey Central Dairy Company Ltd. [1] (The parent has since been known as Cow & Gate, Unigate and UNIQ.) In 2001, Wincanton plc demerged from UNIQ, and was listed on the London Stock Exchange.[1]

Although the company's origins are in Wincanton, Somerset, the company's head office is now in the Methuen Park district in Chippenham, Wiltshire. [2][1] Wincanton has been included in the FTSE 250 stock market index since February 2006.[1]
