[edit] Tidy Up

Hi, welcome and thanks for taking the time to drop me a note. Please make all abuse amusing.

I've deleted some older entries to clean this up. All previous entries can be seen at the history page dated 15 June 2006 or 21 Spetember 2006:-).

[edit] Has your Autoblock become a vandal bot?

If you have been asked to unblock this page, it is almost certainly because an autobot has attacked IP 130.216.191.84. That is The University of Auckland, accessible by 39,000 students. Like the students of any other university, those at IP 130.216.191.84. have created many high quality articles, many more mediocre articles and a few well intentioned but frankly pretty poor articles. Also, unfortunately, and like any other university, it is the home to a small number of vandals.

Like vandals at other multiple user IPs, these vandals deliberately provoke bots to attack the multiple IP - taking advantage of poorly thought out autoblocking bot programming to turn the supposedly antivandal bot into the vandal.

Blocks of multiple IP users are limited to 24 hours, and so don't stop vandals. They do however create carnage for innocent users, expecially when repeatedly triggered as soon as they are unblocked.Punishing 39,000 innocent people who cannot get separate IPs for the actions of one vandal is not only morally wrong, it is exactly what the vandals want you to do.

Correctly programmed a bot should block only those at the multiple IP user who have not logged in from editing. This forces vandals to create a new login identity, (which can be blocked instead of the IP address). The constant need to make new identities turns vandalism a very time consuming hobby - and is far more effective than 24 hour autoblocks.

Bots that autoblock all multiple IP users need to be reprogrammed to prevent them becoming tools of vandals. Those responsible for the bots are responsible for stopping the bots from causing unacceptable "co-lateral damage" - if you are asked to unblock this user then THAT INCLUDES YOU.

Please don't just unblock and continue, but take the time to save others from repeating your job in the future - get the appropriate user to fix the rogue bot. A bot not reprogrammed is a vandalbot, and should be deactivated until fixed.

Please DO NOT attempt to escape action by reference to Wiki comment on blocking reading: " Innocent?. Sometimes IP ranges or shared proxies are blocked from editing Wikipedia. This means that innocent people sometimes can't edit...If this problem affects you repeatedly, ... ask [your ISP] to remedy the problem." this is self evidentally unworkable and the Wiki community must take responsibility for the solution, not encourage vandals by evading inconveinent realities nor hold their victims responsible for Wikis poorly targeted revenge.

[edit] Roger Award

My searches for Roger Awards on nzherald and onenews turned up nothing. Scoop ran the organisation's press releases verbatim. The information on the process suggests that it's just a bunch of left-wing activists throwing mud. The articles on the "winners" were heavily POV - the one on the paper company alluded to low wages without mentioning what it even makes. The awards are barely notable, and while they might deserve their own article, to place them on companies' pages makes it look like Wikipedia is being used for activism. [edit] NZ aircraft categories

Hi Winstonwolfe. The (sometimes tiny) "leaf" categories are a standard feature of WikiProject Aircraft - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft/Categories. However, I hear what you're saying; and while the general rule is:

"Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory. For example Golden Gate Bridge is in Category:Suspension bridges, so it should not also be in Category:Bridges." (Wikipedia: Categorization)

I don't have a big problem with you re-adding some or all of the parent categories to these articles if you want to. One day it would be nice if category pages could drop down not just subcategories, but articles too... the best of both worlds! Cheers Rlandmann 08:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 1 June 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article SS Dunedin, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

--Yomanganitalk 14:58, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

On the subject of that ship, I've requested that the three pictures you added to WP relating to it be renamed. The ship was not the "SS Dunedin" - it was clearly not a screw steamship. It was simply the "Dunedin" (as is the title of the painting). The article has already been moved to Dunedin (ship). Grutness...wha? 01:04, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] One Tree Hill

Thanks for the image of One Tree Hill before the removal of the tree. Do you have other photos of the time, or earlier, that you could upload to Wikipedia? MadMaxDog 22:24, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Whooops. My bad. It isn't that old. The B+W fooled me. Still a good one. BTW - the image caption says 1996 in the article, but the image description says early 1990s. Clarify? Cheers. MadMaxDog 22:26, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry 1996 is correct - I wrote early 1990s before remembering events round when I'd actually taken it. Will have a look for other shots from the same day, which might show the tree a bit more clearly. Winstonwolfe 01:50, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

The Photographer's Barnstar
For providing a very fine and 'arty' B+W image of One Tree Hill before the logging. And to force you to remove one of your infoboxes ;-) MadMaxDog 05:02, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Have done the cropping edit. Have a look and agree or disagree about the improvement. Sadly, the tree is now a bit more off-centre, but I was loath to crop the left as well, that should stay. As noted, I like the artsy B&W horizon with the tree branches at the top left. MadMaxDog 09:04, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Get plastered.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Get plastered.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:09, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] hi

Seems like Image:486 Squadron typhoon.JPG & Image:'Spud' Murphy's Hawker Typhoon, 486 Squadron RNZAF.JPG are duplicates, and one of them could be deleted... Ling.Nut 22:58, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Agreed Image:486 Squadron typhoon.JPG is not linked to anything and should go - full answer on Ling.Nuts page. Winstonwolfe 05:22, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

(undent) You'd have to be an admin to actually delete it (I'm not an admin and have no desire to be one), but you can read the procedures for requesting deletion at WP:IFD. "Duplicates" are one of the reasons an image can be speedy-deleted with {{db}}, but other reasons require more effort. Later! Ling.Nut 12:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NZ v RNZAF

You're right about definitions being fuzzy - I erroneously thought that the Article XV units 485-490 Squadrons were RAF and not RNZAF units. A friend of mine who is a lo-ong time researcher of New Zealand air and ground crew in both World Wars has put me right on that one. The point I was making is that because the unit records of the time (Daily reports etc) reflected their status within the RAF, (ie; 485(NZ) Sqn, as explained by Gerard Morris) that status should be acknowledged in an encyclopedia written some 60 years later. It also avoids confusing the RNZAF units which flew in the Pacific under RNZAF control with the RAF(NZ) units based in Europe which were under RAF control. I'm not trying to poke holes in anyone here; after all you did all the hard work of getting the Article XV New Zealand units on Wikipedia in the first place - knowing where to start is one of the hardest jobs of the lot. It's all too easy to criticise anonymously on the net; in the short time I've been on Wikipedia I've made some right cock-ups (getting the copyright sorted on some of the 60 year old images still has me tearing my hair out!!), so I'm not about to fling mud around. Still, I do like to do what I can to get things right;

  • Because of those who fought the Nazis and other thugs so that 60 years later we could sit at our computers and feel free to share information. (Not that our vets would have seen it in that way.)
  • The information I pass on is the fruit of other people's research, in some cases over 30 years of hard work. I feel responsible for helping pass that work on as accurately as I can.

Anyway, I've just about used up my monthly Internet quota, so I'll sit back, relax and avoid doing to much more on Wikipedia for now. Cheers, and have a great Christmas and New Year. And I hope whoever stole those medals will get their just deserts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Minorhistorian (talk) 00:10, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
