The vanadium redox battery is a type of rechargeable electric battery first developed in 1984 at the University of New South Wales in Australia. It is based on the redox flow cell, a type of fuel cell.

A vanadium redox battery compares favorably in several ways to more conventional rechargeable battery technologies. Unlike a lead-acid battery such as exist in typical automobiles, it can be completely discharged without any permanent ill effects. If desired, used electrolyte may even be exchanged for fresh 'charged' fluid with high efficiency. Also, more charge capacity may be added simply by adding more or higher-volume tanks to the battery.

Unfortunately, current vanadium redox battery technology has a poor energy-to-volume ratio, which limits its usefulness in automotive and portable applications where space is relatively valuable.
