Talk:Winzix

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WinZix is malware, and Wikipedia very accurately had a page explaining this.

The page has now been deleted, presumably by someone with an interest in spreading this fake, malicious software - how is that possible?

Wikipedia, you need to get this page back up and locked.

Agreed. --213.84.30.137 14:22, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I tried to rewrite the article a few days ago, and included quite a few references, but it was deleted immediately. The AfD discussion about it is here: Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/WinZix. The gist of the discussion seems to be that WinZix is not widespread enough to be notable. Brianlucas 22:03, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Discussion is archived, page is deleted. And now people like me who come here first for information on things don't even receive a redirect to the Adware page. Weak. 75.63.73.245 22:45, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

  • Sorry, forgot to log in. I hope no one takes umbrage at me at least redirecting to adware. Natedubya 22:47, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

The argument that this software is "Un-notable" is meaningless. There are thousands of niche articles on Wikipedia. Do you delete them all, too? I thought not. Wikipedia is supposed to be an all-informative resource. Simply forwarding the page to the generic adware page is no good in itself, as this blindsides users looking for information and they get a page with no mention of what they sought after - even if the malware in question is malware.

The better option would to have left the informative portions of the article intact with a link to the adware page for "more information"

At the very least, could a moderator locate the original article contents so that I or others could mirror its very informative and helpful information elsewhere?

[edit] Please restore

There are several non-forum resources about the WinZix scam, for instance here and here. Also you can it listed in the Symantec virus database here. Overall I think the circumstances which led to this article being deleted have changed and that this article should be restored. NegativeIQ (talk) 21:10, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

  • WinZix will certainly continue to be more and more prevailent. At least there are alternative tools like UnZix. Neftaly (talk) 22:21, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
