[edit] "All News, All the Time"
On April 19, 1965, after weeks of speculation, WINS changed its format radically. The station became the first all-news station in the United States, going with the format around the clock.
No, it wasn't. In fact, there were countless "all news" stations across the nation by the time WINS flipped in 1965 -- among them were San Francisco's KFAX (1100 AM) in 1959 and Los Angeles' XTRA (690 AM, with its transmitter in Tijuana) in 1961, as well as WNUS in Chicago; the latter two stations were the brainchild of the legendary Gordon McLendon.
