[edit] correct identification
This comment on the correct identification of the rifle in the image is interesting. But it probably belongs here on the talk page. I think, without verifiable external citations, this would count as original research. -- Geo Swan 14:36, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- It's not original research, the information in question is taken straight out of the Blue Book of Gun Values, S. P. Fjestad, 13th Edition. Someone put that image in the lever action article, and it was later recaptioned to be a Winchester Model 1894 rifle, with it is definately not. I can't say for certain what the rifle is without being able to examine it, but I can certainly look up refrences and say what it isn't, and list the possibilities with the given information. If I can track down an e-mail address to contact someone at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch I might send them a note and see if they have any more information on the rifle--that should count as an authoritative source. scot 15:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

- Of course if you have a verifiable, authoritative source it is not original research. -- Geo Swan 03:30, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] image replacement
When I uploaded this image the wikipedia had no free images of 19th century repeating rifles. This image was from the National Park System, so was in the Public Domain.
There are many fine images now, donated from pictures from private collections, making the image I uploaded less important.
I am completely happy having this image deprecated -- particularly if gunnery experts doubt the caption applied by the NPS archivists. But someone has replaced the image I uploaded, with an image of a different rifle. This is wrong.
- The new image should get its own name.
- Or this image should be moved, renamed.
But, IMO, the image shouldn't bear the original NPS caption, if it is a different image.
Cheers! Geo Swan 14:22, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
- I reverted to the original image. Because no source was offered for the replacement. Geo Swan 03:58, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
