Image:Windows XP Emergency Shutdown.png

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[edit] Summary

Self-made screenshot from Windows XP Professional. In case of failure of a critical system process (in this case, an instance of SVCHOST.EXE was terminated), the NT kernel allows users a short time to save their work before forcing a system shutdown and restart. This can be aborted by loading up a run prompt or command prompt and typing 'shutdown -a', without the quotes to abort it.

I made this with the intention of replacing Image:Windows_XP_System_Shutdown.jpg (which was a photo of the computer screen) with a better quality image. Image crushed with OptiPNG.

[edit] Fair use rationale for Blue Screen of Death

  • In the section on "Other Screens of Death", illustrates clearly the dialog box in question when a system process fails, and how it's different to the usual style of screens of death. Also shows the countdown, and the fact that there is no Cancel button or chance to abort (the window's close button is also disabled).
  • Image is only for discussion of the subject in question and does not detract from Microsoft's ability to profit from the software in any way.
