WIMS 2.0
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WIMS 2.0 (Web 2.0 and IMS) is an initiative promoted by Telefónica seeking convergence between Web 2.0 and the telecom new generation services based on IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), to create innovative, appealing and user-centric services and applications. These services will combine features from both Web and Telecom worlds. On the one hand, relevant characteristics like interactivity, ubiquity, social-orientation, user participation and content-generation.will be adopted from Web 2.0 Services, On the other hand, IMS will enhance WIMS 2.0 services features with a collection of capabilities like multimedia telephony, media sharing, push-to-talk, presence and context, online address book, etc., being all of them applicable to mobile, fixed or convergent telecom networks. In addition, in order to provide more versatile and enriched services and a short-termed implementation, WIMS 2.0 also considers the utilization of pre-IMS telco capabilities like SMS/MMS messaging, circuit-switched video and voice calls networked address books, etc.
WIMS 2.0 comprises the strategies, technologies and service platforms that will allow telecom operators to achieve this convergence with innovative Web 2.0 services in All-IP networks. Following the Web 2.0 revolution and the Telco 2.0 initiative, a change in telco traditional business model is recommended following the adoption of a user-centric and open-garden philosophy consisting in the enhancement of the openness, flexibility and freedom in the fashion services are provided. IMS, along with its associated set of service enablers, has been identified as the base platform to support this convergence and business model change.
WIMS 2.0 follows a two-sided approach. On one side, it pursues to offer IMS capabilities to the Web 2.0 community,so they can be included into web mashups. On the other side, it pursues to exploit Web 2.0 services and technologies to enrich operator's services:
- 1. The first objective is to enable operators to offer telco capabilities to the Web 2.0 environment. That is, to allow IMS services access from the Web 2.0 by means of:
- a. Embed telco capabilities in Web 2.0 services following the strategies below:
- i. WIMS 2.0 strategic line 1.1: Mashups based on widgets or PSEs (Portable Service Elements)
- ii. WIMS 2.0 strategic line 1.2 Mashups based on APIs
- b. New ways for publishing content in Web 2.0 following:
- i. WIMS 2.0 strategic line 1.3: IMS-enabled user-generated content publication and generation
- a. Embed telco capabilities in Web 2.0 services following the strategies below:
- 2. The second objective is to enable operators to enrich their service portfolio using Web 2.0 services and technologies by means of:
- c. Incorporation of Web 2.0 content and events into telecom services following:
- i. WIMS 2.0 strategic line 2.1: Inclusion of Web 2.0 contents and events in the operator services
- d. IMS services delivery via web pages interface following:
- i. WIMS 2.0 strategic line 2.2: IMS on-line applications development (virtual terminal)
- c. Incorporation of Web 2.0 content and events into telecom services following:
