I'm not sure if this page should actually redirect to the British Open (Wimbledon Championships tennis), although that will be where most people will link to. Maybe the following construction should be used:

  • Put the page about the tennis championships on Wimbledon Championships
  • Redirect Wimbledon to Wimbledon Championships
  • add a notice (at the top or bottom) for the town (or neighbourhood?) of Wimbledon in London

[edit] Requested move

WimbledonWimbledon (disambiguation) – Searching for "Wimbledon" is far more likely to be for the tennis tournament than anything else. Wimbledon should be a redirect to The Championships, Wimbledon with a note there to redirect to the dab page. —Wknight94 (talk) 13:56, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

    • Comment: 90% of the world spends 52 weeks a year thinking of it as a tennis event. —Wknight94 (talk) 22:32, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose - there are enough incoming links to Wimbledon, London and Wimbledon F.C. to indicate they are of a similar importance to the tennis tournament. If in doubt, disambiguate. — sjorford (talk) 15:48, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose - The current solution is best as there are many things which may be referred to as just "Wimbledon". boffy_b 11:06, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

  • As the person who last cleared out the links leading to Wimbledon, although most were for the tennis, a few were for the place, a few for the football club, a few for the train station and one for the the film. When I was done I certainly felt that doubt existed and the dab page should remain. I wish this discussion had commenced earlier so I could have recorded some stats (maybe next time if anyone is interested). --Commander Keane 16:32, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
    • To me, the most important thing is what most people think of when they think of "Wimbledon". My guess is the tennis tournament. Almost anyone outside of the U.K. is thinking of the tournament - and that's a lot of people. Just because there are a lot of pages with Wimbledon in their name and editors have linked a lot of them to each other doesn't mean that the tennis tournament still isn't the most popular destination. But if I'm in the minority with that opinion, then so be it. —Wknight94 (talk) 17:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
    • Is there a way to get a count of how many times a page has been visited? That's a more telling stat than how many links there are to a page. —Wknight94 (talk) 17:10, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
      • The page hit stats are not kept and so are not available, due to server load I believe. It's always a tricky balance with cases like these, it still amazes me that [American] doesn't redirect to United States.--Commander Keane 17:39, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
