Wilmslow Road, Manchester

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilmslow Road is a major thoroughfare in South Manchester running from Parrs Wood to Manchester City Centre. Its name changes to Oxford Road at Whitworth Park, north of Rusholme and as it passes the University of Manchester, and changes again, to Oxford Street, when it reaches the city centre. At the Parrs Wood end, it crosses Cheadle Bridge over the River Mersey to become Manchester Road, Cheadle (it enters the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport).

It runs through the centres of Didsbury, Withington, Fallowfield and Rusholme. The route creates what is known as Manchester's "student corridor".

It is most notable as the busiest bus route in Europe, with at least six companies operating many routes. This is partly because it is the main route for students travelling between the residential area of Fallowfield, where many halls of residence are situated (among them Owens Park) and the main campuses of the Royal Northern College of Music, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University nearer to the city centre. Magicbus, Arriva, First Manchester, Stagecoach, Finglands and Bullocks Coaches are among the competing bus companies.

The Curry Mile is a nickname for the main high street of Rusholme, part of Wilmslow Road. It boasts at least 50 restaurants, take-aways and kebab houses.

The name changes from Oxford Street to Oxford Road when the road crosses the River Medlock and the name changes from Oxford Road to Wilmslow Road at the junction of Hathersage Road.
