Willy Chirino (Born in 1947 in Consolacion del Sur, Pinar del Rio, Cuba) is a well-known Cuban-born salsa singer, song-writer and producer who is recognized throughout the world as the creator of the “Miami Sound,” a style that is unique for its fusion of Cuban music, rock and Brazilian Caribbean rhythms. Willy Chirino is one of the few artists in pop music that has managed to overcome the obstacles of time, trends and geography while staying true to their own style. His contributions to the development of his country’s culture and the culture of Latin America, along with his long-standing fight for the freedom of his people, make him one of today’s most important figures in pop music.
Having released over 20 original albums, Willy’s songs evoke feelings of love, celebration, passion, and hope. Several of his albums have obtained platinum and gold status, making him a world renowned musical icon. In 2006, his album “Son del Alma”, won a GRAMMY for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. As founder of the Willy Chirino Foundation, his philanthropic efforts have been recognized by UNICEF and the Department of State.
Willy celebrates his 35th Anniversary in music with his latest released album “Willy Chirino Live-35th Anniversary” (“Willy Chirino En Vivo-35 Aniversario”), a CD/DVD combo of his 35th Anniversary Concert available in stores. This album brought him his first nomination at the 2007 Latin GRAMMY Awards for best Salsa Album. Most recently, Willy and singer/song writer, and wife Lissette, released their first ever duets album Amarraditos (Bound to One Another). The CD, now available in stores, includes a potpourri of classic Spanish language love songs of all Latin America.
He was first married to Olga Maria Rodriguez and they had three daughters, Angie, Olga Maria and Jessica. He later married the singer Lissette and had three more children, Nicole, Alana, and Gianfranco.
Willy Chirino is slated to release his new album "Pa'lante" in Spring of 2008 where soon after he will launch his world tour. For more information on his performances, discography and career happenings, please visit www.willychirino.com.
