[edit] Playing career
[edit] Minor & under-21
Walsh first came to prominence with the Cork minor hurling team in the mid-1960s. He first tasted success in 1966 when he won a Munster minor title. Unfortunately, an All-Ireland medal eluded Walsh at this level, however, he later joined the county’s under-21 team. He won a Munster ttle in this grade in 1968, before later winning his first All-Ireland medal. Walsh played a key role at centre-forward again in 1969 when Cork won both Munster and All-Ireland honours once again.
[edit] Senior
Walsh’s skill at minor and under-21 levels brought him to the attention of the Cork senior selectors by the end of the 1960s and he quickly joined the panel. He won a National Hurling League medal with the team in 1969, before later winning his first senior Munster title following a huge win over Tipperary. Cork later played in the All-Ireland final, however, Walsh’s side were defeated by Kilkenny on that occasion.
Cork bounced back in 1970 with Walsh collecting his second consecutive National League and Munster medals. Cork once again reached the All-Ireland final, however, on this occasion Cork were successful in defeating Wexford in the first 80-minute final. With that Walsh collected his first All-Ireland medal. Walsh lost his place on the team after a lean period for Cork’s hurlers, however, he returned in 1974 to win a third National League medal. He added a third Munster title to his collection in 1975, however, Cork were subsequently defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final.
