Williams Lake Secondary School is a public high school in Williams Lake, British Columbia part of School District 27 Cariboo-Chilcotin. It is often called "WL" or "WLSS", and occasionally "the Dub." Its rival school is Columneetza Secondary School. Before 1999 it only included grades 8-10 and was known as Williams Lake Junior Secondary. WLSS has many very active sports teams, the most successful of which are Rugby which consistently goes to the provincials, and soccer which also tends to do well and go to provincials. Williams Lake Secondary School is also one of the few schools in BC to have had an incident involving a shooting. [1] [2]
The morning of June 5, 2006, a student brought a handgun onboard a school bus, which was accidentally fired at another passenger while it was being shown to a friend. The vice principal heard about the incident and searched the bags of the 3 involved, and one student attempted to flee when his bag was about to be searched, but was tackled by the principal. When the bag was searched, the gun was discovered. The 3 involved were questioned by police and released to their parents.
