William "Red" Dawson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Alfred "Red" Dawson[1] (born in 1943[2]) was an assistant coach for Marshall University's football team for four years, including the tragic 1970 season featured in the movie We Are Marshall. [3]

Originally from Valdosta, Georgia, he was an honorable mention All-American at Florida State University playing both offensive and defensive end.

Dawson oversaw the football recruiting program for Marshall in the nation's southeast under coach Rick Tolley.

Dawson drove to the East Carolina game in order to continue on a recruiting trip, and heard about the Marshall team’s plane crash on the radio as he drove to Ferrum, Virginia.
