William Woods (congressman)

William Woods was a United States Representative from New York. He was born in Washington County in 1790. He received limited schooling, and moved to Bath in 1813. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced in town. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, and was elected to the Eighteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William B. Rochester and served from November 3, 1823, to March 3, 1825. He resumed the practice of his profession, then became surrogate of Steuben County 1827-1835. He died in Bath on August 7, 1837, with interment in Grove Cemetery.
