William Villiers, 10th Earl of Jersey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Francis William Child Villiers, 10th Earl of Jersey (born 5 February 1976), known professionally as William Villiers, is a British actor, writer, producer and peer.[1]

Jersey is the eldest son of guitarist George, Viscount Villiers and his second wife, Sacha (née Valpy), and was educated at Mount House School, Tavistock, Devon; Canford School, Wimborne, Dorset; and Birmingham School of Speech and Drama.[1] On the death of his father on 19 March 1998, he was briefly styled Viscount Grandison (in accordance with the family's tradition whereby each heir is alternatively styled Viscount Villiers and then Viscount Grandison).[1] He succeeded his grandfather as 10th Earl of Jersey in August of that year and took his seat in the House of Lords in 1999, shortly before the reformation of the House.[1][2] On August 16, 2003, he wed Marianne Simonne De Guelle in St Martin de Grouville, Jersey.[3] His heir presumptive is his half-brother, The Hon. Jamie Child Villiers.

In 2007, the Earl of Jersey put up for sale, the family home, Radier Manor, along with several properties and around 70 acres of land on Jersey with an asking price of £12.5 million.[4]

The 10th Earl of Jersey is the senior recorded heir-general of Mary Tudor, Queen of France, younger daughter of Henry VII of England. If the parliament-sanctioned testament of Henry VIII of England and the succession order there stipulated had been applied, and Lady Anne Stanley become Queen in 1603 in place of James I, the present Earl of Jersey would thus be king of England and Ireland (although strict legitimists consider his aunt Lady Caroline Ogilvy to be the true holder of the claim - see Lady Anne Stanley).

He is also a second cousin of actor Bart Ruspoli.
