Dr. William Rowley is an American futurist, currently working at the Institute for Alternative Futures (IAF) and its for-profit subsidiary, Alternative Futures Associates (AFA). Dr. Rowley trained as a vascular surgeon, and prior to becoming a futurist, he was the chief executive officer of two medical centers and a large managed care organization.
Dr. Rowley was Chairman of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System 2020 (MHS2020) research project, which included four year-long studies of the future of health care and the implications for military medicine. MHS2020 involved over 250 participants who learned futuring skills, analyzed trends, developed scenarios, and then created a vision of a preferred future. Insights have already produced some major changes in the direction of military health care. In addition, the group designed an ideal military health system for the 21st century that met their aspirations while being capable of addressing anticipated challenges.[citation needed]
As a consulting futurist, Dr. Rowley often speaks on the future of health and health care. Recent clients include the George Washington University Institute for Federal Health Care Executives; the Utah Medical Group Management Association; the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians; the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service; and the Medical College of Virginia Hospital.
Dr. Rowley has written articles for numerous publications including U.S. Medicine, Surgery, and Stroke. His writing, advocating the evolution of military medicine, was published in the Naval Institute Proceedings.
