William Proby, Lord Proby

William Allen Proby, Lord Proby (19 June 1779-6 August 1804), was a British naval commander and Whig politician.

Proby was the eldest son of John Proby, 1st Earl of Carysfort, and his first wife Elizabeth (née Osbourne), and was educated at Rugby. He was commissioned into the Royal Navy and gained the rank of Captain. He was also involved in politics and represented Buckingham in the House of Commons from 1802 to 1804. Lord Proby died from yellow fever in Surinam in August 1804 while in command of the frigate H. M. S. Amelia, aged 25. He never married and his younger brother John later succeeded in the earldom.
