William J. Mills

William Joseph Mills (January 11, 1849, Yazoo City, Mississippi, USA - December 24, 1915, East Las Vegas, New Mexico, USA)[1] was the 19th governor of the New Mexico Territory, now the U.S. state of New Mexico.

In 1878 he was elected as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. He then served in the Connecticut Senate as a Democrat,[2] representing the 4th District in 1881 and the 8th District in 1882.[1]

Moving to the New Mexico Territory, he was a justice of the New Mexico territorial supreme court from 1898 to 1910.[1]

He was appointed Governor of the Territory on December 20, 1909, but was not inaugurated until March 1, 1910, succeeding George Curry who had resigned effective February 28. Mills was a Republican.[citation needed]
