William Ellis (cricketer)

William Ellis (August 28, 1876January 22, 1931) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire. Ellis was born in Whitwell and died in Crimble Moor.

Ellis' first-class cricketing career began in 1898, making his debut against Nottinghamshire in the 1898 County Championship. Derbyshire drew the match and finished joint ninth in the 1898 County Championship table, while Ellis made two further appearances during the season, in defeats against Lancashire and Essex. The following season, in which he played more games than any other, he scored his only half-century, against Leicestershire, in the same match in which six-time Test cricketer Bill Storer hit his career-best innings of 216 not out.

1900 saw Ellis take a break for a year, while his next first-class appearance came against London County in 1901, and he made two appearances during the 1901 County Championship season, which saw Derbyshire winless and bottom of the table. Possibly as a result of this, Ellis took another year's break and re-appeared for the team in the 1903 season. After his penultimate appearance, at the end of the 1903 season, Ellis took yet another three-year break, before appearing in his final first-class game, in 1906.

Ellis was a lower-order batsman for the team, and an occasional, though unsuccessful bowler, having never taken a wicket with the ball.
