[edit] Cardiology

At Beaumont, world-renowned cardiologists and cardiac surgeons perform leading-edge procedures and research that will become the medical curriculum of tomorrow.

For instance, Beaumont doctors can assess your heart's health using a new high-resolution coronary artery scanner that can capture images of your heart more precisely than ever before. And, bad cholesterol levels can now be reduced through a new non-surgical method called LDL Apheresis. It's no wonder that U.S. News & World Report has named Beaumont the top hospital in Michigan and one of the top hospitals in America for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Cardiology Firsts

The prominence of a medical facility is often defined by the discoveries pioneered by its medical teams. Here are just a few of Beaumont's significant contributions to the advancement of cardiac care.

1974-75 First in the world to develop active and passive fixation of pacemaker leads

1979 First non-university hospital to use intracoronary streptokinase to dissolve blockages in heart arteries

1984 Performed first randomized study of angioplasty as treatment for heart attack

1988 First U.S. hospital to use rotational atherectomy to open heart blockages

1989 First in the world to install high-resolution HICOR cardiac imaging equipment

1991 Only hospital to successfully perform triple valvuloplasty in pregnancy

1992 First hospital in the world to use an X-ray imaging technique to identify a fractured heart valve and successfully remove it

1996 First U.S. hospital to use vein allograft stents

1997 First hospital to combine angiography with minimally-invasive heart bypass surgery in the operating room

1997 First U.S. hospital to use heparin-coated stents as therapy for acute heart attacks

1997 First hospital in Michigan, second in the U.S., to perform a new laser revascularization therapy called Percutaneous Transluminal Myocardial Revascularization (PTMR)

1998 First hospital in Michigan to use gene therapy as a treatment for heart blockages

2000 First in the world to use an experimental treatment using liquid oxygen to improve heart function after a heart attack

2000 First in the world to test ethyl alcohol to prevent repeat blockages in heart vessels

2001 First in North America to use an experimental heart-cooling treatment to lessen the damage caused by a heart attack

2002 Beaumont Cardiac Surgeons are the first in Metro Detroit to offer Medtronic Colvin-Galloway FutureTM Bands to patients with mitral valve insufficiency.

2002 Beaumont Cardiac Surgeons are the first in the Midwest to implant the Medtronic AdvantageTM prosthetic heart valve.

2003 First in the world to use stem cells from a patient's own blood to try to repair the damage caused by a heart attack

2003 Beaumont is the first and only cardiac surgery program in Michigan to perform robotic cardiac surgery.

2003 Beaumont is the first to use the latest technology in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and is moving toward a less invasive and total cure for atrial fibrillation.

2005 First in the U.S. to implant an Aortic Valve Percutaneously

2007 Clinical and research operation of 128-slice Siemens cardiac CT scanner. Leader of the four US machines.

[edit] Cardiac Rehabilitation

Beaumont's Cardiac Rehabilitation program has been around since 1978 and has evolved into one of the most successful and comprehensive programs in the country.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is designed to help the cardiac patient get in better shape, physically and mentally, after having been diagnosed with:

   *
     coronary artery disease
   *
     congestive heart failure
   *
     angina pectoris
   *
     peripheral artery disease
   *
     cardiomyopathy
   *
     certain congenital heart diseases

or after having:

   *
     a heart attack
   *
     open-heart surgery
   *
     heart transplantation
   *
     pacemaker implantation
   *
     cardioverter or defibrillator implantation
   *
     balloon angioplasty or stent insertion

Using a comprehensive, exercise-based system, Beaumont's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program can often:

   *
     improve function
   *
     reduce symptoms
   *
improve wellbeing and quality of life
   *
reduce coronary risk factors in patients with heart disease
   *
     extend overall survival
   *
     decrease subsequent cardiovascular events

Skilled professionals are part of the cardiac rehabilitation team, including:

   *
     cardiologist
   *
     physiologist (Ph.D.)
   *
     rehabilitation nurse
   *
     dietitian
   *
     exercise physiologist
   *
     psychologist or psychiatrist

The team uses research-based interventions to slow, halt and even reverse heart disease. The program consists of seven components:

   *
     cardiovascular evaluation or stress testing
   *
     exercise training
   *
education and counseling about coronary risk reduction
   *
     stress management techniques
   *
medical surveillance and emergency support when appropriate
   *
     psychosocial and vocational counseling
   *
     outcomes documentation and assessment

Beaumont's cardiac rehabilitation program is an outpatient program that begins with a preliminary evaluation to determine your cardiovascular status.

Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation

This ECG-monitored exercise and education program takes place in a medically supervised group setting. Based on the results of the preliminary tests, specific exercises are prescribed during sessions held three times a week. Participants can join a cardiac support group, stress reduction class and a weight-training program. Individual dietary counseling is also available.

Phase III Cardiac Rehabilitation

As an ongoing program, Phase III allows you to continue medically supervised exercise in a group setting three days a week for one hour. Also available are:

   *
     weight training
   *
     educational counseling
   *
     mini-lectures
   *
     a quarterly newsletter
   *
     informational handouts on cardiac-related subjects
   *
individual weight management and dietary counseling
   *
     relaxation/support group
   *
     smoking cessation programs
   *
special events such as a golf tournament, heart walk and awards banquet

[edit] Emergency Care

When something minor turns out to be major-like indigestion that really is a heart attack, or a dizzy spell that turns out to be a stroke-the emergency room evaluation is often more critical than it seems. If your condition is more serious than you first thought, you need to be sure the hospital attached to that emergency center is the place you want to be.

The emergency centers at Beaumont, Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe are staffed and equipped to handle the most severe illnesses and injuries as well as the bumps and scrapes that also need medical attention.

When you or your family members come to Beaumont's emergency centers for care, you know you're getting a Beaumont doctor-not a physician contracted through a company to work in the emergency center. Which means the doctor who takes care of you knows the services available to help as well as any specialists you might need.

Our doctors pioneered the use of coronary CT angiography for use in the emergency room for diagnosing patients complaining of chest pain. In a revolutionary research study conducted by Beaumont doctors, results showed that coronary CT angiography was not only accurate in diagnosing chest pain patients, but also reduced the time to diagnosis by 75%. As a result of this revolutionary study, Beaumont Hospital's Emergency Center in Royal Oak now uses CT angiography to aid in the diagnosis of chest pain of unknown cause.

Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak is also the only level 1 trauma center in Oakland County - which means the center is equipped to handle the most severe trauma cases.

Beaumont's After Hours Clinics can also provide you with the care you need when your doctors office is closed. Beaumont has After Hours Clinics for both adults and children at both the Royal Oak and Troy hospitals.

[edit] Teaching Hospital

Beaumont serves as a teaching hospital for both the University of Michigan and Wayne State University medical schools[10], Wayne State's school of nursing[11], and Oakland University[12].

The hospital also offers residency and fellowship programs for physicians[13], and research opportunities through the Research Institute[14].

In addition to this, Clinical Pastoral Education is offered through Beaumont's CPE department[15].
