The faculty includes nearly 50 teachers.

Wirt High School was established in 1939, the school was named after Dr. William Albert Wirt, who served as the first superintendent of the Gary Schools from 1907 to early 1938. Actor Ernest Thomas of the "What's Happening" TV series is an alumnus of Wirt.
[edit] School Uniforms
All GCSC students from pre-Kindergarten through the 12 grade are required to wear school uniforms.[1] Starting the 2007-2008 Academic School year, all schools will follow the new "school uniform" policy.
