Willetton Senior High School (WSHS) is the largest government high school in Western Australia. The school first opened in February 1977 with a student population of 77. Today WSHS enrolls approximately 1800 students each year and employs 200 staff. It is located about 11k due south of Perth City and 15k west of the port of Fremantle. The school is ideally located near community facilities and the Southlands Boulevard shopping centre. The student catchment area for WSHS encompasses the suburb of Willetton and part of the suburb of Bull Creek, which is shared by Leeming Senior High School. Willetton and nearby Rossmoyne Senior High School (with features similar to Willetton) are highly competitive. Willetton SHS was recently announced by the Minister for Education as the top TEE public school for 2007 based on the highest number of Curriculum Council awards won.

[edit] Campus

WSHS covers an area of approximately 4500m². There are seven main buildings along with numerous transportable buildings buildings some many years old. The school has air conditioning in some areas in particular the transportable buildings and the Theatre.

[edit] Special programs

WSHS is one of several schools offering the Academic Talent Program (ATP) entry to which is through a rigorous centrally organized testing program. Entry to the science focus Talented And Gifted (TAG) program is managed at the school level. There is also a specialist fine arts course for Years 8 to 10 and an exceptionally successful senior school art program. The centrally endorsed specialist course in computing was the first of its kind in WA and has recently been expanded to include a multimedia stream. The centrally endorsed specialist basketball course which runs from Year 8 to 12 is unique in the State as it offers students a TAFE Certificate III and a tertiary entry interface. Both male and female teams have won multiple national championships.

[edit] Academic

Willetton has rarely been overshadowed by other schools in terms of academic performance in general and TEE marks in particular. Willetton's constant high performance has attracted a large number of enrolment inquiries from both local and overseas students. So great is the demand for places at the school that (except for students qualifying through the above special programs) it is a local area school taking only students from its immediate locale. Real estate prices in the school's catchment area reflect the desire of parents to send their children to Willetton SHS. The school continues to strive for further improvement in all aspects of its operations so that its students achieve their goals. See the *2007 Annual Report for full details of the outstanding success of the class of 2007.

Willetton has maintained a near unique position by excelling and focusing equally on both its TAFE and TEE courses. It achieves top performance in both areas.
