Wilfrid Derome

Wilfrid Derome (born 19 April 1877 in Napierville, Canada, died 24 November 1931) was a forensic scientist. He studied at the College of Montreal, Sainte-Marie College, and Joliet Seminary, where he received the Bachelor of Arts in 1989. Later, he received a doctorate of medicine from Laval University in Montreal in 1902, interning at Notre Dame Hospital.

During 1908-1909, Derome studied Legal Medicine at the University of Paris. In 1910 he was appointed Professor of Legal Medicine and Toxicology at the University of Montreal and became head of the Laboratory of Notre Dame Hospital.

In 1914, he was named the director of the newly founded Government Laboratory of Legal Medicine and Police Science in Montreal and served in that role until his death in 1931. He testified as Medical Expert to the Crown in many legal cases during his career.

Derome acted as associate editor the American Journal of Police Science, contributing two articles during 1930.

Wilfrid Derome was honored in 1969 by a building that incorporates a forensics laboratory, the present coroner's office, a morgue and both the SQ and the CUM in Montreal's Quebec government.
