[edit] Thank you for voting
Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. Thank you all once more. Wikiwoohoo 20:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[edit] Brand
The discription of the parsonage in Ibsen's Brand, translated by Eli Sonja Vasset:
-
-
-
- And here it stands without a fear
- Because the glacier passes here
- Just when the time of leave sprouts comes
- Above the heads like boulder storms
- The parsonage protected stands, like in a cascade cave.
-

--Frode Inge Helland 09:33, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
In the Norweigan edition in the beginning of part 3. Brand expresses his dislike of his parsonage and Agnes replies:
-
-
-
- Her ligger det dess mere trygt.
- Så ytterlig har breen bygt,
- at når ved løvspretts-tid den går,
- den skrider utenover oss,
- og prestehuset urørt står,
- som inne i en hulfalls-foss

[edit] Ceyockey RfA
I appreciate your spending the effort to look into my editing in as much detail as you obviously did in order to emerge with words of support in my RfA. I'm glad that you affirmed Radiant's nomination and I'll be measured in my use of the cleaning closet's contents. I am curious though ... I hadn't realized any of the disputes I've been involved in were "rather famous"; which one were you thinking about? User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:41, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] My RfA
Williamborg, thank you for your support in my RfA which passed on 13th December 2006 with a tally of 49/10/5. I am delighted by the result and a little daunted by the scope of additional responsibilities; I shall be cautious in my use of the new tools. I am well aware that becoming an Admin is not just about a successful nomination, but a continuing process of gaining further experience; for this I shall welcome your feedback. Again, many thanks for supporting my RfA, feel free to contact me if you need any assistance; but lacking superhero powers, I can't magically treat you by the power of the internet, despite your kind faith in my clinical prowess :-) David Ruben 03:24, 16 December 2006 (UTC) |

[edit] Translation
Hello my fellow WikiProject Lakes colleague! I would like to ask you if you can translate a tiny stub from NO wiki, no:Briksdalsbreen ? It would be very much appreciated. Thank you. - Darwinek 11:04, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the translation. I have been there in 2000, beautiful place. I plan to start stub about Dalsnibba mountain in future, currently there is only DE wiki article about it. I have been there in 2000, also. It is a very popular tourist spot located near the magnificient Geirangerfjord. Take care. - Darwinek 20:34, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- I like Poland a lot, too but there are many far more exciting places than Łódź :). I will translate the German one in future (after some exams), and I'll let you know then. - Darwinek 21:02, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Arnfinn Kjelland
Hi there, I have added a "prod" template to the stub Arnfinn Kjelland, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. If you still believe that the author can assert some notability I suggest that you move this article to the Norwegian Wikipedia, he does not have an entry there. Cheers, ArchStanton 16:54, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi again and thanks for your patronising words and welcome message on my talk page (yes, I have read the introduction already). Seems like I have encountered the unwritten rule that a newbie questioning the work of senior editors will face heavy scrutinisation of their own contributions.
- Williamborg response: Guilty as charged on the patronizing words— and acknowledge that even a new editor can make valid comments. As to an unwritten rule—I suspect this is just human nature to respond to a relative new editor who challenges ones work.
- On my proposal to delete the article on Arnfinn Kjelland: If you disagree with the nomination you can simply remove the tag and explain why in the edit summary.
- Williamborg response: Yes, I know. But I do not remove prods on my own work—I'm hardly dispassionate, as you noted, and may not be the best judge. Will let the closing Admin decide merit.
- On your comments about my other edits: Writing new articles is of course important, ensuring that the articles in Wikipedia are of a certain quality is of equal importance. I have reviewed quite a few of the articles on Norwegians, and discovered that many articles, especially on academics and writers, are obviously written by themselves, publishers or business associates to improve their ghits. My so-called ‘campaign’ was that I nominated 4-5 of the ones I thought were obvious for deletion, and warned the authors (if not anonymous). Most of them are now deleted, those contested (I admit that I can be wrong!) can stay – no problem.
- Williamborg response: Okay, "campaign" was harsh. I do agree that your work is actually extremely good and that your heart was in the improvement of the Wikipedia.
- I will take your advice and do my best to increase the number of articles on notable Norwegian people (especially these, and people/bands in the area of what you referred to as ‘pop culture’). There are some other articles that I would like to see deleted too, but that can wait.
- Williamborg response: This is exceptionally good news! Some fraction of new editors are drawn to administrative actions. Soon enough they become administrators with the powers to delete/undelete/block/unblock who render final the judgments on others work; they tend to make better admins when they've done serious contributing/editing before moving ot admin functions. So I have long preferred to see new editors contribute for a while before they go to the admin functions.
- Williamborg response: And I do like your intent to contribute to Norwegian writers; there are many holes.
- Williamborg response: As to pop culture, I do feel there is already too low a standard, allowing inclusion of Fancruft on Wikipedia, but Wikipedia is a relational database & can accommodate lots of this evanescent material. And I could well be wrong on the enduring value of what I see as Fancruft, so will respect your (and many, many others) contributions.
Until then, cheers ArchStanton 19:08, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New article Corfu slide
Hello, I have started a new article that ties in with your work on the Missoula Floods. Just a start as I need to get to the library for some more research, not much I can find on the web. I live in Othello so I will try to get a picture of the slide later this week and add that to the article. I wonder if you might want to add this new page to the boxes you have put at the bottom of several related articles and on your user page, or can I go ahead and do that myself? Also, are there any other articles/pictures you would like to see on the area that I could help with? Thnx --killing sparrows 03:56, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I didn't know how to edit the box but I see that by going to the page Template:Ice Age Floods I can add the page there as you have done. I hope to add some other articles on this topic and I will put them in the template as I do that. I travel alot, heading for St Paul Island, Alaska soon but Othello is my home base so if you ever head out this way let me know!==killing sparrows 17:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Corfu slide
Hi there! I like the stuff you've added to the article, I haven't been able to get a picture yet but hope to soon. Just as a matter of interest, there is rumored to be a large chunk of ice from the Missoula flood buried under the slide. Early settlers in the region excavated a tunnel into it and used it for food storage at one time. It probably was known to the Indian tribes of the area though I haven't been able to find any documentation of that or the pioneer use, it's all been word of mouth. The entrance was knocked in several years ago when it had become a popular place for kids to go and drink beer and party in the summer (me included!)but you can still stand next to the caved in tunnel and feel the very cold air flowing out. Like I say, all word of mouth but I have talked to several old-timers who have heard of it. Is it truly possible the ice could have lasted this long? --killing sparrows 03:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Your pictures
Hi Bill, What an amazing coincidence! A friend and I drove from Othello to Seattle last Thursday (the 12th) and I wanted to get some pictures of the slide as we drove right past it. Unfortunately his car was not able to travel the roads to the top so I didn't take any. Imagine my surprise when i returned and found your pictures on the article! The 'gods' must have wanted those pictures! Great job!
I will try to talk to some 'oldtimers' from the area bout the 'ice cave,' my mother is part of the local historical society and they may have some info also. I could actually drive to the spot, its along the old Crab Creek road at the base of the Saddle Mts. Wish me luck.

[edit] Ice cave update
Hi there, Well, sad to say the ice cave was not any remnant of the floods. It was dug by early settlers who would cut and haul ice from the Columbia river during the winter and then have 'cold storage' during the summer months. I talked to a gentleman who went with his father to do this very thing in the late 1930's. It was used until the 1950's and then with the availability of refrigeration, largely abandoned. The entrance started falling in sometime in the early 1960's and was then further purposely collapsed to prevent anyone getting in there and possibly being trapped. Too bad, it would have been a great find.--killing sparrows (chirp!) 00:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I noticed your interest in Slash-and-burn on the Talk page for Shifting cultivation. Under Topic 7, Comparison with other ecological phenomena, I added an admittedly awkwardly worded Topic 8:
Alternative practice in the Pre-Columbian Amazon basin
Slash-and-char, as opposed to slash-and-burn, may create self-perpetuating soil fertility that supports sedentary agriculture, but the society so sustained may still be overturned, as above. See article at Terra preta.
There is no stand-alone article on Slash and char. Pawyilee 11:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below) We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future. This is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue. Any and all contributions are welcome. Hi there. I've just converted the bracketed source information you added to Vardøhus Fortress into proper footnotes. One problem, though: You never stated from which pages of the books you were citing. To just say, for example, "Stagg" isn't quite enough. We also need the relevant page numbers. If you would be so kind as to provide those that would be great. Hope to hear back from you soon on my talk page. Manxruler (talk) 09:27, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding page numbers to your citations. I have changed the format so that the page numbers can be seen. You're right. That book citation format does not support page numbers, that's why I never use it. It's good now, anyway. You forgot one page number though, the one about the destruction Vardø suffered during WWII. If it's all the same to you I'll be happy to dig up a source for that one myself. Thanks again for those page numbers. Manxruler (talk) 23:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
