[edit] A welcome from Kitsumiti

Hello, WilliamH, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay. We're glad to have you in our community! Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Though we all make goofy mistakes, here is what Wikipedia is not. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. The Community Portal can also be very useful.

Happy editing!

[edit] Marienkirche, Lübeck

Have you done any work on that translation? I was gonna work on it, but if you have something, show me what you've got, so I can save some time. If not, that's okay too. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 12:10, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if that kind of ticked you off. If there's text of mine that you'd like to replace, go right ahead -- I'm not particularly attached to it. But honestly, with nothing done to the article in a month (User:Black Velvet apparently also tried his/her hand at translation, albeit not particularly successfuly) and your apparently not having signed into Wikipedia in more than a week, I really didn't expect to get a response any time soon. I was surprised that you responded at all, honestly, because in my experience most people forget about that sort of thing.
My general philosophy on Wikipedia is that information sooner is better than information later. I figured that four weeks with no activity (which of course is not the same as no progress, I recognize that) was long enough to wait for the information. That's not meant as an offense to you, it's simply me doing what you're also doing -- making Wikipedia mroe complete.
You'll notice that I greatly sheared down a lot of the text, so, if you think that your final text is more complete or helpful, don't be afraid to replace some or all of mine. But that's sort of how it works. I had the resources to make an article better, and I did it. I don't really see that as a problem.
In the future, if you're overhauling an article and not making regular contributions to it, you might consider leaving notes every once in a while on the talk page so that people know there's actually work being done on it. When I translate articles, I note on the talk page that I'm working on the translation and how far I've gotten / how long I think it will take, usually.
Generally on Wikipedia editing first and talking second is fine, because we have revert. The best way to prevent that is by making it very clear what you're doing. Otherwise people are going to do what I did -- see an article that should be different than it is, and make it that way.
Again, sorry if you got ticked off about it. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 12:06, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Glad to hear it. Like I said, I didn't mean any impoliteness or offense ... I don't work like that. Good luck / have fun with your translation in progress. If you'd like to, at any point, show me what you've done, I'd be happy to look at it. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing the finished product ;)
Peace! - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 14:10, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm removing my previous comment. You can read it if you like in the history, but I was tired and in a bad mood (which had nothing really to do with the article) when I left it, and it was in error. I'm sorry for appearances of incivility.

The basic bulk of the comment was that I felt a little slighted by the characterization of the MK translation as a "new article" on the Germany portal. I spent two hours working on that article and I felt my work was being brushed aside by that comment.

But like I said, sorry for incivility. I should have waited until I was in a better mood to leave a comment. We all make mistakes.

Peace - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 13:04, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I know you meant well, and, like I said, my frustration lay really outside that article. I've been under some stress lately, both real (finals coming up, plus my abroad year is done and I have to move back to the states now) and wiki (you should see the mess I've been moderating over at Talk:Democratic Underground), and I suppose that's made me a little more prone to snarky comments. But I would really hate to think that I offended you with it, because I really didn't want to.
And I agree with you wholeheartedly about the larger point: a good article. I noticed when your version of the article went up (I've still got it on my watchlist, didn't bother to take it down) and I think you did a good, thorough job. That is all that matters, and I 100% agree. And the bulk of my contributions, while perhaps helpful for about two or three days, aren't really the point. It was wrong of me to try and make them the point, and I know that.
As for the other translations, I know that for certain. I plucked Mainz Cathedral of the German GA list and did some work on that one, but didn't quite do it to completion. (Unfortunately, articles within my specialty, which is certainly not Romanesque churches, tend to be hotly contested, and I'd rather not get involved with that sort of mess usually.)
Anyways, best of luck with your further studies, your further translations, and everything else. And please accept my apologies for stepping out of line.
Peace. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 07:19, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

Hey Will, Ben Here

I understand Wikipedia is no instruction manual, but there is no simpler way to describe what to do.

I couldn't tell you how to be safe in Airsoft without telling you what to do. I appreciate Wikipedia a lot, however there is no other way to describe HOW to be safe.

[edit] Friedrich Kellner

I notice you spent much of yesterday and the day before assessing hundreds of articles. I wonder if you would please take another look at the Friedrich Kellner article, which you rated as "Start." This article already surpasses the Start guidelines, and it fulfills the quality scale guidelines for a B grade. I have compared this article with some of those you marked B, and I have a feeling this is just an inadvertent error. If for some reason you wish to keep this in the Start category, could you please give me a list of what needs to be done to elevate it to a B, and I will get started on the project right away? I'll be happy to work with you in every way I can. I appreciate your taking the time to reassess it. Thanks, Scott Rskellner 17:39, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

It was very kind of you to reassess the article. I do appreciate it. I will continue to work on it to improve it further. As you can tell on my talk page, I am laboring under the subjectivity of being related to Friedrich Kellner, so I am always glad for other points of view. Thanks again. Scott Rskellner 22:52, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] History of the principle of inquisition in German criminal law

You rated the article History of the principle of inquisition in German criminal law as stub. Please could you tell me what makes You think that way. Thw1309 18:33, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

I rerated it Start-Class. Start-Class articles can have poor grammar, no structure, and a short length. "A stub is an article containing only a few sentences of text which is too short to provide encyclopedic coverage of a subject, but not so short as to provide no useful information." (from WP:STUB). Kusma (talk) 10:44, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Denial

I am in no way questioning the authentecity of that explanation; being Jewish, the grandson of a WWII soldier, and the relative of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust I am all to aware that most "questions" of Holocaust denial have such simple explanations, but that section didn't have a source that anybody had even questioned the amont of rubble. With Wikipedia, the issue is verifiability, not truth. Even if people have raised the issue, without a source we can't include it (With or with an explanations). [edit] Vermont Libraries Guy

Hi, the anon IP you are arguing with on the Belzec talk page is a long-standing crackpot. There isn't much point engaging with him, as he rarely or never edits articles, and only seeks to cast doubt on the Holocaust and waste other people's time. His full contribution history is here if you are in any doubt - he has also dabbled in cigarette-cancer-link denial and other conspiracy theories:

as well as his current IP,

This is just FYI, argue with him all you like if you want to. cheers, Squiddy | (squirt ink?) 12:49, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Volcanix92 usertalk

Hi William,

I noticed you wrote on the Volcanix92 usertalk a few times, asking us to stop using it as a means of communications. I would like you to know that Jeremy and I are using Wikipedia usertalk because it is our only means of free communication. Jeremy has been away at sea for the past 3 months, on a ship, and wikipedia is one of the only 'free sites' he has access to. Internet on the ship is extremely slow and runs over $.50 per minute. This is not social networking, as you imply, but two people trying to maintain communication thousands of miles apart. Additionally, I would appreciate you not reading our posts. Thanks.

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kenneth C. Bucchi

Hi WilliamH,

I've gone ahead and reverted your non-admin close of the AfD above based on the fact that it has a couple of fairly well-reasoned delete comments and thus is not eligible for non-admin closure. Obviously I hope it gets kept and, given the expansion of the article, I think it will most likely be kept, but cases like this are best closed by an uninvolved admin.

I also looked through a couple of your recent closes and noticed a couple borderline cases at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Indradyumna Swami (2nd nomination) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Andrew Jess Dannenberg. I don't disagree with your call on either (rather, I'm going to endorse both of them), but in the future it might be best to stick to unanimous or near-unanimous keeps when doing non-admin closes just to avoid unnecessary muss and fuss. It also wouldn't hurt if you expand on your reasons for closing AfDs as keep--you clearly have a good eye for consensus, but forcing yourself to explain what specific points the commentors are in consensus on is excellent practice and will demonstrate a knowledge of policy and its application at your inevitable RfA.

Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions! --jonny-mt 02:02, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi jonny-mt. I did speculate such an outcome after having closed it, I just tried to take the initiative. I'm sure you realise that me not being as articulate as I should have been (and intend to be from now on) does not equate to lacking policy/consensus knowledge, so in future I shall outline my reasoning based on the consensus I construe more clearly, and stick to more clear-cut cases. Also cheers for your RfA comment, I'm glad you think I may be a suitable candidate some time. Regards, WilliamH (talk) 13:38, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] easyJet Incident

Hi there Will. Just to let you know I reverted your edits to EasyJet regarding the reported incident. WP:AIRLINE guidelines state the basic criteria for including an incident or accident on an airline page and states that:

  • Accidents or incidents should only be included if:
    • The event was fatal to either aircraft occupants or persons on the ground;
    • The event involved hull loss or serious damage to the aircraft or airport;
    • The event resulted in changes to procedures, regulations or processes affecting airports, airlines or the aircraft industry.

We developed this guideline to avoid minor and non-notable incidents or those of little encyclopedic value clogging up airline and airport pages alike. Hope you're not offended that I removed your edit, and that you agree with the reasoning behind it. Thanks. SempreVolando (talk) 14:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Spam

{{helpme}}

Could anyone explain to me why the following URLs: www.holocaustresearchproject.org and www.deathcamps.org are spam blacklisted? Both contain reams of information and I cannot help but feel this is chucking the baby out with the bath water. WilliamH (talk) 22:38, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

I recall the latter being blacklisted due to a conflict between that site and a site with a similar name having an edit war with each other both claiming their site was the correct one, and the net result was that both links ended up getting blacklisted. I can't find the conflict but Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/LinkReports/deathcamps.org might give you an idea on the spamming level of one site but not the conflict. As for the former, I don't know; I'm still looking. x42bn6 Talk Mess 23:45, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Found one link for the latter: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive219#141.157.161.15. x42bn6 Talk Mess 23:47, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
And found the former, see [1]. I'll be removing the helpme tag now, hope this helps. x42bn6 Talk Mess 23:49, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I think if you specify exact links to pages, you can get them whitelisted for the former; go to MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist which details the process (the links are blacklisted at m:Spam blacklist, so local whitelisting is the only option). As for the latter, I'm not so sure as it was an OTRS request to remove the links, but if there are individual pages on that website, I think that they can be individually whitelisted. x42bn6 Talk Mess 12:38, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

That is correct. :) Acalamari 20:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Unrelated: thanks for your recent WP:UAA reports. In cases where the user is spamming (like User:Zoomin india that you just reported), it's probably a good idea to also tag the spam page for deletion by throwing {{db-spam}} on it. Just thought you'd like to know. Mangojuicetalk 15:01, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Try to tone down the WP:UAA reports. Violations you report there need to be really severe and need immediate blocking. Specifically, if a username is strange or confusing, it doesn't need an immediate block -- you should instead start a discussion with the user, perhaps using {{uw-username}} as a jumping-off point. Also, keep in mind that for a username to be promotional, it should be or contain the name of whatever the user is promoting. Mangojuicetalk 19:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Equa, please refrain from non-admin closures unless 5 days have elapsed, and the vote is unanimous. Nothing against your judgement, which I am sure is sound, but early non-admin closures - whether or not invoking WP:SNOW - after less 5 than days, especially with several delete votes (I'm aware the article was expanded after the delete votes on Malin to Mizen were cast, but still) are not worth the hassle... Thanks. I think I'll be reading those pages for now to get a better understanding of the whole thing.Lex (talk) 04:09, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Hi WilliamH, did you do anything nice for mom on Mother's Day? MagicBullet5 (talk) 16:27, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I did the same for my mother. I've been creating more pages and improving the quality. Thanks. MagicBullet5 (talk) 16:44, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] First time I'd ever closed a topic.

I thought I did pretty well. It's okay to do what I did, right? The article had already been deleted, so I figured there was no point in it being open anymore. HalfShadow 20:22, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Nah, I know enough about how the system works here to know that an apparent 'keep' isn't necessarily one, it just may be one. But in this case the article had been deleted, so there was (and could be) no agrument to the contrary. HalfShadow 21:58, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Wrong closing template! See User_talk:HalfShadow#Re:_deletion_closure. Ty 03:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Egg Torture

Hi William, could you take a look at the above article. I've got some concerns about it's notability, and a quick search of google doesn't turn anything up except a myspace account. I was going to CSD, and then saw some references to tour dates, etc, which gave me pause. Cheers. --Deadly∀ssassin 08:51, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks for taking the time to look at that, I appreciate your second opinion there. --Deadly∀ssassin 13:45, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Curious

Hi, WilliamH. I am curious as to why you made this edit before that user even made any contributions. Thanks. ~ UBeR (talk) 22:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

WRT to this tagging...

I finished adding details from another source shortly after you added your tag. I admit I was very surprised to see the article tagged within one minute of its creation.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 14:38, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. The over-hasty application of WP:CSD tags is a serious problem.

[edit] need to replace an article

Dear WilliamH,

I would like to rewrite an article on the Russian modernist writer and artist Alexei Remizov. I did my PhD on him at Brown University, and have recently finished a book on his graphic art (it is now under review with Northwestern UP). The article presently posted has numerous minor mistakes that would be easy to edit out, but my main concern is that it has very little information about the subject’s life and work and in what it offers it is very lump-sided. For some reason, it focuses on a very minor area of Remizov’s work, presenting him as a writer of Gothic horror stories. The article neglects to list the only English-language monograph on the writer (by Greta Slobin), and has next to noting for Remizov’s works in the bibliography section. A less important, but very irritating, inclusion is the article’s mention of an unfavorable comment regarding Remizov’s writing by Vladimir Nabokov. This comment should not be included in a general article without any proper context or commentary.

If you think it is possible to remove this article, I will gladly submit a more informed entry to replace it. Please, feel free to use my work email for further correspondence: julia.friedman@durham.ac.uk

Sincerely, JULIA

[edit] Thank you for the welcome

Hi WilliamH, thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia in my talk page. The reason I joined was to report a multiple-time spammer and hopefully have his page (with google ads and no sources mentioned) blocked, if possible. However I haven't figured out how to use the Wikipedia spam page properly, maybe it's because I'm new here, but I just don't get it to be honest. If I gave you the information would you be able to report it? SerialReporter (talk) 18:15, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks and good luck

Thanks for the warm welcome, Will, and best wishes with your academic work. AngelaVietto (talk) 05:04, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Apologies

Many apologies for labeling your welcome as vandalism!!! I made the mistake of looking at my user contribution page and obviously didn't know what I was doing. I'll do some more reading before I touch that page again. Is there anyway I can undo what I did? I think I may have done the same thing to at least one other user. [edit] AfD closure

Yikes! Thanks for the heads up. I missed that one. TNX-Man 17:00, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion discussion

You edited Talk:Pup-play and referred to the AFD. Please provide a click link to that closed AFD debate. Thanks. Edison (talk) 19:48, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

In the box you added, I see a link to the main AFD page, but no link to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pup-play. It is customary to include a direct click-link to the deleteion discussion for the article in question (which was supposed to be merged, in any event. Maybe I am seeing a stale copy of the page. See if you find a link, in the box you added, which takes you to the desired AFD. Thanks. Edison (talk) 00:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

for the Welcome page, I really appreciated it. =) Kotakkasut (talk) 05:13, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed deletion of Fifth Muse album

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Fifth Muse album, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?  M2Ys4U (talk) 16:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

It appears, according to your front page that we joined wikipedia on the same day! Haha ——Ryan | tc 12:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that too, and funnily enough, was just in the process of messaging you about it as well! You might be interested in this chap too :) WilliamH (talk) 12:31, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] re: Midnight Cabaret

Hi. Thanks for this. I originally created the page as a redirect to The Midnight Cabaret. If the reworked article is indeed non-notable, can the redirect by reinstated? Lugnuts (talk) 13:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Having removed the proposed deletion template, the editor who contributed the prose was not impressed that I prodded it. Similarly, I think he would object to reinstating the redirect. It would be a bit bitey to take this to an AfD, but the subject really does not seem notable and Wikipedia is certainly not a course guide of what the assosciated college offers in its drama faculty. I agree that merging/redirect is the best option. WilliamH (talk) 14:24, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Yep, I'd go for the AfD route too. It reads like an ad for some NN org. Asuming it does get deleted via AfD, I'd recommend the closing admin reinstates the redirect, and possibly lock it. Lugnuts (talk) 16:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it's a legitimate redirect to this. AfD isn't an option, nor is a redirect to Sarah Lawrence College, so accordingly, content about a course guide isn't warranted. WilliamH (talk) 16:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry about that! Thanks for the help with this. Lugnuts (talk) 17:41, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the heads up

Hadn't intended to create more than a stub, if I ever got round to it, but that is very nice work. Thanks. John Nevard (talk) 02:56, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:ACC

Hi! I noticed you have been helping out at ACC. Just a quick note, if you can't create an account, because it is too similar to another account, but that other account has few or no edits, and none recently (last edit was 6 months to a year ago), then you can click the "Defer to admins" button. The similar button is only when the requested account could be confused with another account in existance, which is already active. I just looked at this request [2] and noticed this - I thought I'd bring it to your attention.

Keep up the good work though! Stwalkerstersock:talk ] 11:26, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Gotcha, cheers. WilliamH (talk) 11:27, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] July meetup

I will try to get to that one, it's just really hard because someone who has been my freind since I was 11 has just died of cancer, and things are quite distrupted at the moment, but thanks for responding so soon. Chafford (talk) 19:34, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA

Hello, WilliamH, and thank you for your recent participation in my RfA, which was closed per WP:NOTNOW after reaching a vote tally of 5/15/2. While I am disappointed in the outcome, I understand that it - as well as the comments left by yourself and others - was in the best interests of Wikipedia at this time. I plan to take everything that was written to heart and improve myself here on Wikipedia with a goal of perhaps accepting a nomination again in the future, should someone choose to nominate me. As a way of gathering further feedback, I have created a page in my user space for other editors to leave comments about things that they might have observed during my RfA and to continue my "education process," as it may be considered. If you would like to contribute to that page, it may be found here. Again, thank you for participating and I appreciate your comments! --InDeBiz1 (talk) 17:59, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 8 June 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Robert Jan van Pelt, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.
