Crusades task force

Is not "de" a solecism in these names? for "Longespee" is "Longsword" not a manor. This William rented his manors to go on crusade, and sold borough rights to Poole. --Wetman 02:42, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Indeed it is, though an error that seems fairly widespread and dates back to at least the 19th century. I agree that we ought to be consistent about either following along with the erroneous tradition or correcting it, but I don't feel like changing anything absent a fuller survey into the variant usages.
