- Are any of Jimbo's talks besides Wikimania openly available?
-
- Jimbo's talk on FLOSS Weekly [1] is available under a CC license. It's non-commercial, but I don't think that should give you any problems. jaco♫plane 19:02, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
- I assume content from other Wikimedia projects may be included too, even if "Wikipedia" is in the name? Wikinews comes to mind, although there are so many MSM daily and hourly news podcasts available that it's probably not worth doing that unless a Wikipedia version could have a very heavy encyclopedic bent.
- Would AAC be at all acceptable as an optional format? Yes, ogg is often the only possibility, but if there ever was more than one full-length spoken article included in one episode, the enhanced AAC chapter breaks would be very useful.

I was thinking mp3, aac, oog for ease of distro (and compatibility w/ players). We could call it "WikiMedia Weekly" but I think the Wikipedia name is slightly more known around the nets. Hopefully we can get Jimbo on on occasion - same w/ Tim and Brion :) -- Tawker 05:56, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
There are some advantages to doing "true podcasts" in .mp4 file format. Wikinews and Wikiversity have podcasts that can be found at the iTunes store by searching the podcasts for "wiki". --JWSchmidt 02:50, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
Ideas
Well, I might as well start a discussion on how to improve this thing, seeing as I haven't seen any yet. The Episodes are quite long and might not be good for people with slow connections and such, so maybe splitting the netcast into segments maybe.. say, 10-15 mins long. Smaller file sizes, and people can download the segments they want to hear. Your thoughts? - Zero1328 Talk? 09:44, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm, yeah, I think we could do something like that. I was thinking a lower bitrate mp3 (that can be streamed w/ the player on the site) would be a good way to start things off. Breaking it into 4 seperate audio files might make a little fun on the editing -- Tawker 16:17, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 14:34, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
The word podcast
Can we not use that word? It's a horrible buzzword, and if I remember right trademarked by Apple! Luigi30 (Taλk) 17:24, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Logo
If you feel like a new logo, ask me on my talkpage. It's not a request, just a suggestion - without wanting to cause any offence, the current logo does give the impression of 'I was made in MS Paint!'. —Vanderdecken∴ ∫ξφ 09:47, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, I like that effect. :) This is a good offer, though, and we'll keep it in mind if we ever need a new artist, or if JWSchmidt can't help for any given episode. Thanks! --Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 10:34, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- FYI, I've uploaded the logo to last.fm. It needs to be voted on before it gets approved though. jaco♫plane 05:23, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
WP:EL
guys, i love ya'll, but please take out the links to products in the Podcast section. you can move em here, but WP:SPAM and WP:EL would have them nix'ed. JoeSmack Talk 20:15, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there any way to play this in the browser without downloading? --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 00:06, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, on WikipediaWeekly's blog page there is a flash player that you can use. Sorry, no way to embed a flash player in wiki itself -- Tawker 00:14, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing that out. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 00:14, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Self references
You may want to remove some self reference from the podcast. While I found the wikipedia parts interesting the parts talking about speech to text etc didn't seem necessary. Less is more? -Ravedave (help name my baby) 06:17, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sure, that's entirely possible. Generally, we'd prefer to mention as much feedback as needs mentioning, but inevitably that means we need to refer to ourselves a fair bit. We'll try to cut it down. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 08:16, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Updating
the new episode is out but the wikispace isn't updated, and neither is Template:WikipediaWeekly-subscription (only that ep 8 is out and not it's summary). JoeSmack Talk 15:12, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Digg
FYI, I've submitted WW to digg: http://digg.com/podcasts/Wikipedia_Weekly/ jaco♫plane 14:07, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, the new Digg makes podcasts in particular a lot easier to add and view via digg. Neato, thanks. JoeSmack Talk 15:27, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Podzinger
Have you tried using Podzinger to help with transcribing? According to this article it might be useful. JACOPLANE • 2006-12-29 21:30

Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:40, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Hello from WikiCast
Hi Tawker, Fuzheado and others...
In your article on Wikicast you made out it was aiming for a 24 Hour stream :-) It's not.. At the moment it's focusing on building a programme library...
You are more than welcome to ask for a 'spokesperson' in #WikiCast to explain the project further. I don't currently have Skype so you would need to find one of the other contributors.. ShakespeareFan00 01:32, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

- See da blog, the tubes are finally back up, we're looking at this weekend to record -- Tawker 02:10, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Transcripts suggestion
I see you've been having some serious problems with transcription. It might be easiest to just play the podcast in your earphones, and simultaneously parrot it into a microphone for a single-voice, steady recording, that would work better with speech recognition software.--Pharos 02:24, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
- I get confused enough just trying to string together a coherent sentence. I'm sure someone else would be able to try this out, but that my efforts would be... well, hilarious. -- Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 02:41, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Phone-in possibility
Not everyone, particularly non-technically-minded potential interview subjects (your average librarian, for example), would be so Skype-savvy. I'm not sure of the technical details, but perhaps it would be possible to set up a phone line connection. Hey, if Wikinews can do it...--Pharos 20:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- It's certainly possible to do this, one way or another; one possibility is that listeners can ring a dummy Skype account and leave a message. Then, we could play it while recording the episode itself, and talk about whatever point was raised -- sort of like a phone-in conversation, just with a few days' lag between the message and our response. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 01:29, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- I bet if you asked nicely, you could just "borrow" the Wikinews line for this purpose ("Press 1 for Wikinews, press 2 for..."). Unfortunately, it's hardly ever been used. n:User:IlyaHaykinson is the one who runs it and pays for it.--Pharos 02:18, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
delivery
I believe the delivery method for the signpost has worked well. It lets people who are interested know when a new edition is ready, and it provides valuable advertising by leaving the information on many peoples talk pages. Perhaps User:Ralbot could also deliver Wikipedia weekly updates.-Ravedave (Adopt a State) 18:33, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed this method of delivery is already an option, please add youself to this page to subscribe to the spamlist!
- Thanks for listening, Witty lama 20:06, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

- Don't you see? People would just die to hear the easter ogg... because it's a "bonus", even if it's something ridiculous. Soon every other right-thinking podcast will want their own easter ogg, and maybe folks will finally be enticed to learn how to use the audio files on Wikipedia.--Pharos 22:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Seperate work in progress with produced work?
One of the things I find strange about WP:Weekly is that the main page contains stuff for the producers of WP:Weekly, not just the consumers. Shouldn't the main page be: This is what it is, episodes, and then a section linking to other pages to handle the internal stuff (eg tipline, content suggestions etc)? -Ravedave 22:51, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- We should really re-organise the existing page, but it's got a lot of inertia going since there's so much already there. I'll try to do something about this at some point, but it might be easier just for someone to {{sofixit}} for us. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 13:49, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Wikimania!
I think there should be a fair bit of preparation time if someone decides to do a videocast or report of WPW at Wikimania. See [2] - Zero1328 Talk? 10:18, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
"Cultural Moment"
Come on folks, you haven't done one WP:FS yet.--Pharos 05:58, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- This is true. :) We were thinking about it for last episode, we'll have to do it this time around. Want to suggest a good sound, by the way? I'll see what I can find, but you might already know a better alternative... Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 19:05, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Release times
Try to keep the release times a bit more regular(excluding special Eps). Recently we've been releasing regular episodes mid-week and that'll just make us more stressed. If we stick to a certain day, (like uh, Friday night, so people can listen Saturday morning) We'll have a regular schedule and it'll be easier to sort out. If we finish recording the next one in three days, think of it as time to refine the episode, or a short break, instead of releasing it ASAP. - Zero1328 Talk? 14:59, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- I concur. Having a regular release schedule would make it a lot easier to follow the podcast. JoeSmack Talk 15:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I know it's a problem. We have stuff in editing at the moment, but sometimes editing takes a lot longer than usual and it screws things up a bit. We shall see what we can do though -- Tawker 17:19, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Recent vandalism study
Wikipedia:WikiProject_Vandalism_studies just finished Study 1 that analyzed 100 random articles' total 668 edits during the months of November 2004, 2005, and 2006; the findings suggest that in a given month approximately 5% of edits are vandalism and 97% of that vandalism is done by unregistered editors. Worth some talk? The study's talk page has some more info for implications, further discussion and some other down-the-road studies too. JoeSmack Talk 05:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
WW Image
Just curious, but what is the image, within the WW collage on the main page that looks like a goose but with a strange mouth (directly to the right of the words "Contact WikipediaWeekly")? IMPORTANT: Music on Wikipedia Weekly...
On Wikipedia Weekly you use some musical tracks.
Whose the artist, recorder and importantly what license is the music?
It would be nice of you to include such information. ShakespeareFan00 16:42, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
New episode notices
Hey, Tawkerbot hasn't been delivering the new episode notices recently. Shall I or someone else spam the list when a new episode is released? WODUP 03:44, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing this out -- and, to answer your question, why not? :) I'll try to get on to Tawker about the bot, but my PC just died (which leaves me pretty much out of the WW loop until such time as it's fixed). If you haven't already, try leaving a message on his talk page. Cheerio, Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 09:42, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
bulletin board
I've commented out/hidden the WW template at Template:Announcements/Community bulletin board, till a new episode is released. Hopefully that will have the added bonus of helping people be more likely to notice it when it reappears, too. Hope that sounds good. (I'm looking forward to the next episode : ) --Quiddity 21:21, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'm going to begin removing the WW template from the bulletin board 2 weeks after the last update. Partly to give space for another proposal (Wikipedia talk:Community Portal#Wider Attention system), and partially because it looks like things might be quiet here for the summer ;) Hope that sounds ok. --Quiddity 05:23, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Podcast File Sizes
Any chance you guys can have a heavily compressed version of the podcast? It'll make download the podcast faster for users who don't mind audio quality. Stormtalon 09:59, 16 March 2007 (UTC) 11:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Define heavily compressed. We can go to a super low bitrate version of it's required -- Tawker 19:57, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Renaming this page
I think this page (and its subpages) should be renamed to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Weekly because, well, that's just a better name. This current page name is not very intuitive and this is hardly a WikiProject. MessedRocker (talk) 13:51, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Skypecast
have you considered ever using Skypecasts as a worldwide call in show for your project? These can be recorded and then made available. A skypecast can have up to 100 listening live, and the host has control of who gets to talk.--Filll 16:58, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- We have, (yes, sorry for the very slow response) - the big question is, could anyone listen at the really weird hours we record. Too many timezones is a bad thing. -- Tawker (talk) 23:04, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Hi Guys. Can we revisit this one again in the new year. Just made a note (bottom right) - one to a skypecast room, the other to WikipediaWeekly (WW). The idea is to offer ONE skypecast room (at least to start) so we might have some standard place for remote groups to get together in real time (and perhaps record), and one podcast station for the ones who can't.
-
- Don't know if technically this is the way to go as you've got a good thing going already (am talking to the Skypecast beta guys about when it may be geting solid). It it seems many WMF and project groups would contribute, listen to and support WW, especially if we had an WW edition which brought the spoken news together in a concise programme. Anyhow, give it come thought would you? You can talk over at the ComsProj site. Happy New Year. --Simonfj (talk) 21:50, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
