[edit] Ways to get attention

I strongly recommend that you place the project on the Wikipedia:List of WikiProjects and that you plaster your banner anywhere and everywhere you can. I only found out about your project today, and am in the process of placing the project banner on all the relevant pages I encountered today. I have also put it on my list of banners. One small suggestion, however: maybe you could make the flag image a bit bigger. It is relatively small right now. Badbilltucker 19:31, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Yep, planning on doing so! We just started the project officially yesterday :-) plange 20:43, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
That would explain why I hadn't seen it before. Best of luck on what should be a rather demanding, but I hope rewarding, endeavor. Badbilltucker 20:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
I found out about the project today and have added the tag to many articles within its scope. Hopefully this will pull in people from a variety of areas with interest in Virginia.Joshua4 17:22, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
Don't be shy about adding the tag to stubs. See the long tail. --Joshua4 11:12, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] i hereby secede from this project...

I plan on starting a WikiProject for West Virginia sometime soon and was wondering if you disloyal traitors to the Union (j/k) would like to cooperate on all matters of the current state of WV before June 20, 1863 (ie when we told y'all to "go take a hike" after you guys bet on a losing horse, lol) and the events related to the partition of the state? Cheers.

PS--That was all tounge-in-cheek, btw. youngamerican (ahoy-hoy) 12:11, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Sure, secede, and condemn yourself forever to inbreeding jokes! Nah, joking aside, I think it would be more than suitable for our project to assist in matters concerning the history of Virginia prior to the split. It was Virginia, after all! Good luck on your project! As we just now are getting on our feet, we have not yet organized a very thorough schedule, but let us know when you begin work.~ (The Rebel At) ~ 12:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Virginia in the Civil War

We've been waiting for ya'll! The American Civil War task force has started a state-by-state treatment of U.S. states in the American Civil War, hence the new category Virginia in the Civil War and the stub, Virginia in the Civil War. I went ahead and placed Category:Virginia in the Civil War on your WikiProject Virginia/Categories page under Category:History of Virginia. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/American Civil War task force for more info. Thanks! • CQ 16:04, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks CQ, I'm a member of both ACW task force and this one, so let me know how I can help! plange 17:23, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposition for template

Would a template similar to the {{VAGovernors}} be good for the colonial governors as well? T REXspeak 06:02, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Sounds like a good idea to me! Have any other states done one we can perhaps steal ideas from? --plange 06:16, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Awesome job!!! --plange 04:42, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal

OK, have set up a Portal! Need help finishing it and am also open to whatever else we should add. You'll notice I'm missing some things in the Fact area, and also have done the Attractions page if anyone wants to tackle that. Am also wondering what else we should add to show off our great state? Perhaps have a whole History box? --plange 05:09, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Core Biographies

WikiProject Biography has finished their compilation of core biographies (200), which is basically a worklist of articles that we'd like to get to FA. Some of them are Virginians (of course!!), so I thought I'd list them here so we can perhaps work together to get these up to snuff....

Did I miss any others? --plange 01:48, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Assessments within AWB. Click on the image to see it in better resolution

Hi. If you still have work to do tagging talk pages and assessing articles, my AWB plugin might be of interest to you.

The plugin has two main modes of operation:

  • Tagging talk pages, great for high-speed tagging
  • Assessments mode, for reviewing articles (pictured)

As of the current version, WikiProjects with simple "generic" templates are supported by the plugin without the need for any special programatic support by me. I've had a look at your project's template and you seem to qualify.

For more information see:

Hope that helps. If you have any questions or find any bugs please let me know on the plugin's talk page. --Kingboyk 15:01, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Is this something to put in the newsletter?

I've written at least a stub for each of the primary state highways in Virginia except for the minor routes that serve state facilities. --NE2 03:32, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Definitely! Go ahead and go to the Outreach department and add it to November's-- Great work! I think things like this are definitely newsletter material so we can all get a sense of how the project's doing, plus tootin' a horn ain't a bad thing ;-) Did any of them have material to nominate it for a WP:DYK? --plange 04:04, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
I think they're all over five days old. Maybe if I make an article about the facility routes in general, I'll nominate it for DYK: "...that in the U.S. state of Virginia, many driveways of state facilities are maintained as primary state highways?" --NE2 04:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
That would be a good one, I didn't know that! --plange 04:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Invitation to new WikiProject

A new WikiProject has been started, and may be of interest to members here. It is WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. It covers all listings on the Register, in all states and territories. Should you be so inclined, please feel free to join. And spread the word to any other interested parties. -Ebyabe 19:57, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 19:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Whaa?

Has the A-Class disappeared? Do we not have any articles that are A class. It doesn't show up in the assessment table. T REXspeak 17:48, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AID vote on Jamestown!

Someone from the project has nominated Jamestown, Virginia - please vote! --plange 17:14, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

    • I was the one who nominated this article for improvement. It needs a lot of help, and will be getting worldwide attention next year with the 400th anniversary celebration. Although it is in my main field of writing, it needs more than I can do. I was wondering if members of this Wikiproject would consider a vote in support? Wikipedia:Article Creation and Improvement Drive Many thanks, Mark in Historic Triangle of Virginia 21:28, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Virginia folklore

I was writing up the article on the Varmint of Burke's Garden last night, and it got me to thinking about possibly creating a "Virginia folklore" category. Trouble is, I can't really think of anything else that might fit in the category, other than the Bunny Man in Vienna. Any thoughts? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

There certainly is probably a lot of content that could be filed under Virginian folklore, but it would require having a good source reference to create the necessary articles. As is, I'd like to think there's enough folklore to support a category, since apparently we have categories for shopping malls and golf courses. You've my support. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 18:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
I don't really have a good, usable reference for that, I'm afraid - I can pick a few things from various travel books and whatnot. If we could come to a consensus as to what would constitute folklore in Virginia - maybe come up with candidates for the category - I'd be amenable to slapping the label on them. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 01:55, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
That is a good question of what constitutes folklore. Dictionary.com's definition as traditional customs, beliefs, and legends, of a people. I'd reckon that perhaps the definition might better be how often its cited. If you hear something from your grandfather and can't find any other sources to back it up, maybe it doesn't belong on the Wiki. :) ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 02:05, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Chiming in, as that was a major aspect of my Master's Degree -- we do have to be careful of not doing any WP:OR, so we can only include, like RebelAt says, things from verifiable sources that have already tagged it as folklore. I'm sure there are books out there on Virginia folklore... --plange 15:36, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, agreed - I don't want to add anything that would violate WP:OR. But I think that some things, like the Bunnyman, are fairly obviously folkloric in nature, and they are documented in numerous sources. Maybe the wreck of the ol' 97? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 22:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possible subproject?

I would like to call to your attention the fact that the recently formed Wikipedia:WikiProject University of Virginia has recently been userfied, after only three days of existence. To me, this does not reflect very well on wikipedia, because the group had already gathered three members in those three days. Considering that the scope of the UVa project technically falls within the scope of your project, I was wondering if you thought that there might be a chance for the UVa group to become a subproject of some kind of your own group. I also think it would set a good precedent for all the other state-sponsored universities out there which could potentially make the unmanagable number of existing WikiProjects even more unmanagable. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. Badbilltucker 15:53, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

I certainly don't see why this shouldn't occur. We have an Education division thats designed specifically for such things, and it hasn't even been touched yet. Thus, I think the UVa folks could work from that area of the Va project. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 18:46, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Agree, UVA could easily fit as a subproject. There are a bunch of folks who have been editing the College of William and Mary article during the past year, and I feel likewise about possibly formalizing that. Both fit well within the Education category, as would public schools, etc. My 2 cents. P.S. Please vote for the Jamestown article in WP:AID if you haven't already. We need more votes. Mark in Historic Triangle of Virginia Vaoverland 11:19, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Agree - I do not see why it should be denied as a sub-project, especially under the scope of this project. (Is my agreement too late?) -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 17:50, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Nope, not too late. If the WP:UVa people are still interested, we can set up the education page and get them rolling. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 23:15, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Protected Areas of Virginia

Swiped the format from the Pennsylvania template and went ahead and created this - I figured it would be nice to have. I'll go ahead and stick it on the existing articles. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 02:35, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Aaaaaaand done. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 07:02, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rambot mystery

Now, I was given to understand that some years ago, user:Rambot created boilerplate entries for all towns compiled by the US Census.

So why, only today, was a micro-stub created for Lovingston, Virginia, which appears to be the county seat for Nelson County? How could a county seat -- even for a small county -- be overlooked? --Calton | Talk 06:32, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Doesn't it have something to do with which places are incorporated? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 07:41, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Another answer could be simply that accidents happen. Items are overlooked or missed. Though, it may be a sign that we should cross check the rest of the counties to make sure that no other county seats have similar issues. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 15:12, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

A look at List of county seats in Virginia shows 7 red-links:

And that's not counting any blue-links which may be bad micro-stubs. I'm not a resident of the Commonwealth, so I leave this up to you folks who know about these things. --Calton | Talk 08:00, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:25, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Virginia Wines

There does not appear to be any information on Virginia wines/wineries/Virginia Wineries Association on Wikipedia. I think this is something that should be written about as an emergent part of the economy--especially in the Charlottesville area, but also in Loudoun County and near Williamsburg and I recall reading that Virginia is number 3 or 4 as far as number of wineries in a state go. Anyone care to assist me on this? I don't really know how to create a page or anything, but I'd like to give it a try.--Velvet elvis81 18:55, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I was surprised there wasn't an article. Here's an article on Oregon wine, that you can use as a basis on creating a Virginia wine page (just click on the red link and start typing away!). If you're worried about format, just be sure to start off with something like "Virginia Wine refers to wine that is produced in the Commonwealth of Virginia." If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or contact me on my talk page. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 14:33, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Paramount's Kings Dominion should be reassessed

Paramount's Kings Dominion was assessed as Start-class last year; I have been working on it since last summer. This article is now almost complete; most of the bullet-point attraction lists have been converted into brief, but detailed, histories of each of the park's attractions. In addition, the article now has pictures and three dozen different sources. Could somebody look at the current version of the article, reassess it, and leave any comments/suggestions on Talk:Paramount's Kings Dominion? After I finish the other two sections, I'd like to see about getting it a good article nomination or a peer review.

This is the only WikiProject that Paramount's Kings Dominion is part of, since there is no WikiProject for amusement parks. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 05:48, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

If no one else gets to it, I'll give it a look over in the next several days. I did glance at it, and it certainly has blown past the "start" category of assessment. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 14:34, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
I ranked it as b. I know there is a formal process somwhere to get a rating higher than that. (at least as far as I know). If there is not, somebody else can feel free to put a higher rating. It has prety good inline citations. The intro section was a little short and the starting sections were a little sparse with the citations. overall alot better article. -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 14:59, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Good job so far on the King's Dominion article! There's still a few red links to get rid of, and the article could use a good copyedit, but it's getting closer to good article status. You might also want to move the timeline of rides to a separate page, linked under 'see also'. Maybe create a 'list of rides and attractions' page? Dr. Cash 17:30, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images of City/County Shields

I have noticed that on many of the City and County articles in Virginia that the shield images are now red links. I know that they were deleted because they did not have the appropriate fair use tag. I want to know if somebody can revert the deletion so that I can place the proper fair-use tagging on those images. I am asking this because it is hard to find seals for some of the cities and counties that have missing shields. If you would like to contact me for more information leave a note on my talk page. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 15:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I noticed this, and was disappointed. I'm not sure how to go about retrieving them, but hopefully something can be done towards their replacement.~ (The Rebel At) ~ 22:30, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

UPDATED because I didn't notice how bad my typing was. I am sorry for looking like I was a weird person. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 00:58, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Richmond, Virginia

The article on Richmond, Virginia has just attained good article status. Could use a few more inline citations, and some more photos, and I think it will be on the road to featured status. Dr. Cash 17:32, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Thats great to hear. I tried to beat up some activity here a month or two ago without any results, but perhaps we can do a collective work on Richmond. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 22:13, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Project needs a leader?

Ever since Plange and T Rex went on hiatus, it seems to me that this Wikiproject has not had much momentum. I think we need a leader/coordinator. I'm happy to help and do some grunt work, but I don't think I'm up for leading a Wikiproject. Do we have any aspiring project coordinators in our group?--Kubigula (talk) 15:50, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I was the first to get things rolling (project idea and the not so snazzy photo on top), but I'll happily admit, the grunt work was done entirely by Plange, bless her heart. As is, my life has become too hectic for me to make a significant contribution in the position of a leader, either. I do have time to be a good minion. :) ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 22:09, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, nobody has jumped in with an offer to helm this sucker, so I guess we'll just muddle along the best we can. Any thoughts on what we need to do to get this project moving? I'm thinking the next orders of business should be to: (1) try to get all the appropriate articles tagged and assessed as part of the project (I've been working on this); (2) Identify the articles that most urgently need attention; and (3) guage the actual interest of the folks who've signed on and try to get them engaged - perhaps some kind of newsletter or individual talk page contact?. By the way, Rebel, I really like the photo on top.--Kubigula (talk) 04:00, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks about the pic, Kubigula. It sounds like you've got a good game plan. I know that Plange had developed a newsletter. We'll have to uncover its location and vamp up a new version, but its certainly doable (a link to the newsletter was placed on talk pages). As for article identification, I'd reckon it'd be articles on important topics such as places or people that are the items that best represent Virginia. This selection could be problematic, or it could just take one person putting up a suggestion. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 21:48, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Found the newsletter location here. Feel free to work on it, and I'll try to do the same this week as well. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 22:21, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Cool - it's a start. I'm not sure what to put in the actual newsletter, other than to suggest project members put this page on their watchlist, if they haven't already, and to please work on some VA articles.--Kubigula (talk) 03:47, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] April 16 2007 Va Tech Wikiproject Virginia members

Today as most if not all of you know was a really terrible day at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The tragedy there will touch families across the Commonwealth and beyond. Some of those involved as victims may include other Wikipedia editors, as we have some really bright students among the thousands working on Wikipedia. I also hope that no one in WikiProject Virginia, obviously a much smaller group of us, was involved. Of course, with WP, many of us do not even use our real names; Wolstenholme Towne was less than 2 miles from my home, which is on part of the old Martin's Hundred, but the massacre near here was in 1622, almost 400 years ago. I will pray for everyone involved with the current tragedy and hope this didn't hit closer to home for us in this group than we already know.

[edit] Proposed new WikiProject

Hi there, I've decided to propose a new project dedicated to Richmond, Virginia. Leave you comments here if you wish. Neldav 21:22, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hampton Roads area photos

I will be contributing lots of these very shortly, especially of the Peninsula cities and counties.

[edit] Pronunciation of "Botetourt"

I added this to the discussion page at Botetourt County, Virginia, and am reposting it here for higher visibility:

"Botetourt" is pronounced "BOTTAH-tot" by locals, not "BOW-tuh-tort". I would add the pronunciation to the article myself, but don't know how to translate the pronunciation into IPA symbols. Someone who can, should. Porkchopmcmoose 03:19, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

In all fairness, go ahead and post it the way you did here. Eventually, someone will come along and translate it into the IPA symbols. Personally, I prefer the non IPA manner, as they're easier for the layman to read and understand.~ (The Rebel At) ~ 14:26, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Radio/TV Station Talk Page Template Question

I know on radio and TV stations in other states the WikiProject Talk Template is placed on that stations page, but I haven't seen it on any VA stations. Should I had the WikiProject Virginia Talk Template to each of the radio and TV stations in Virginia? Just wondering. Take Care....NeutralHomer T:C 03:42, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

I see no reason not to include them, so long as they are clearly VA only stations.--Kubigula (talk) 18:16, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
I tagged all the VA radio and TV stations with the WikiProject Virginia talk page template. I have a question on two though. Since WVVA is technically licensed to Bluefield, WV, but studios are in Bluefield, VA, what should I do there? Also, WJLA, techincally licensed to Washington, DC, but has had studios in the old Newseum building in Rosslyn, VA for about 4 years now (I think...could be more). Should either WVVA or WJLA be included? Take Care...NeutralHomer T:C 05:36, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Considering that they are a part of Virginia, I think that they should be tagged in the Virginia project, since there would most likely be an audience from Virginia. I would think that they should also be tagged as part of the project in the area in which the station is licensed as well. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 20:36, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I think the guiding principle is that if the subject relates to VA and you have an interest in it, go ahead and tag it. If we have members with an interest and a willingness to improve any given subset of articles, then that is a net benefit to the wikiproject and wikipedia as a whole. No worries.--Kubigula (talk) 21:09, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
I added the VA and WV talk templates to WVVA and the VA (located), DC (licensed), MD and WV (serves-DMA) to WJLA....I added all in the hide/show WikiBanner so it clears up the page.
My next project is to completely update the List of Radio Stations in Virginia, like I did with the list in West Virginia. I would like it if the template I use for both is uniform across the board....but one step at a time. Take Care.....NeutralHomer T:C 21:45, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Is this thing dead?

Is this project still active, I've been away from it for half a year. T Rex | talk 23:59, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't think its so much dead, as somewhat, well, hibernating. There are people want to work, but really no one who has the time to step into a leadership position and lead the way. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 00:34, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
Maybe not a lot of activity on the WP Virginia page itself, but lots of work going on in the increasing number of WP Virginia articles, with many additional ones now rated. Imagine that: A WikiProject with workers and and a lack of bureaucratic leadership activity. If only the real Virginia were more that way! ::Mark in Historic Triangle Vaoverland 14:08, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VA article GA or Featured

Does anyone want to help Kubigula and me to get the main Virginia article to at least Good article status, possibly even featured? T Rex | talk 10:39, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Only four state articles (including WV and NC) are at GA status, and only one (Minn) is FA class. Getting the Virginia article at least up to GA would be a nice feather in the cap of this project, and if the NC and WV editors can do it, I am confident that we can too. I have begun reviewing the article and will try to post later today on the article's talk page as to my view of its status and needs. I hope others will join the effort.--Kubigula (talk) 17:29, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
I'll help any which way I can with my semi-limited resources. Presently, the majority of my library is packed away in boxes. But, alas, that never stopped Batman...and that makes no sense. Ignore that. Sure, I'll help!~ (The Rebel At) ~ 01:12, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Just let me know what ya need help on and I will do my best to help. My fields of knowledge are history on the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Hampton Roads and Radio and TV stations throughout the state. Take Care...NeutralHomer T:C 05:08, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I am also willing to help. Vaoverland 05:31, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I will also help in any way needed to make this article the best it can be --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 12:29, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Outstanding. Many of the sections need some copyediting, and almost all need more inline citation.(I'll copy the rest of this comment to the article talk page and suggest we continue the conversation there) T Rex is right that there should probably be a culture section too. Please pipe in if you have ideas, but general copyediting would help or perhaps taking an individual section and running with it. I think I'd enjoy working on the Laws and Government section, though I'll defer if someone else wants it and I'll commit to working on whatever's left.--Kubigula (talk) 04:06, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I will do my best to help, but some bad news today might take me offline for this upcoming weekend, but then I will be available. Take Care....NeutralHomer T:C 05:35, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm on this. I think we can get it to GA by the end of the year. I've purged a lot and split Virginia into new articles. The main problem right now is the writing style and the lack of citation. And the lack of a Culture section, let alone a Culture of Virginia article. Best--Patrick Ѻ 15:32, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Good work so far. I'll try to get in gear and help!--Kubigula (talk) 04:27, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

FYI - Virginia is up for Good Article. The review was favorable, though the outcome is on hold pending additional referencing. Anyone with an inclination can certainly help.--Kubigula (talk) 15:26, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Zip code request

I began the page, added data, added stub codes, added the project info to the talk page...and was almost immediately contacted by someone from the deletion watch, instructing me how to proceed or the article would be deleted. I did exactly as was told, noted that on that page's talk page, and on my own (where the notice was placed)...and not 20 hours later, the page has been deleted. I have no idea how to proceed. I was so careful to make it known that the page was requested by this project, name it as a stub (VA stub and VA geo-stub), give the VA footer, and add the project's banner to the talk page--plus I added prelim zip code data. Then, I followed directions to keep its deletion from going forward... Protocol got me nowhere. Any suggestions? :(

Carla Hufstedler 23:24, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to the WikiProject and thank you for your efforts. Sorry for this experience - I know it's aggrevating to spend time on something only to have it deleted. Apparently there was a fairly recent AfD - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lists of ZIP Codes in the United States by state, and the consensus was against having list of zip code articles. Looks to me like a losing fight at the moment.
Anything else you are interested in? We do have the Wikipedia:WikiProject Virginia/Article requests - though it looks like it's mostly newspapers and schools at the moment.--Kubigula (talk) 00:14, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh, certainly! I'm still in there. :) Thanks for the explanation--it was just so confusing to fulfill a request, then when challenged, fulfill the challenge's request...and then have the page deleted anyway, and so very quickly. I'll be hitting the article requests page this weekend. :) Thanks for the help, and for your encourangement and support. Not having a why has always confuzzled me. --Carla Hufstedler 21:41, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Revamping the collaborations page

Since our collaborations page has been pretty much inactive for a year, I thought that we could change it and replace it with an idea that User:Krm500 came up with for Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey. It uses this format and I think that it will help revitalize this project and get more articles to at least GA status. T Rex | talk 19:27, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Neat concept - it's a better structured version of what I was trying to do with Virginia above. Our collaborations page is so inactive that it can't hurt to try something new. My only concern is that discussion on improving an article should ideally take place on the article talk page - where editors outside the project are able to participate (and perhaps become participants in our project). However, this is an issue with any collaborations page. Perhaps this could be addressed by transcluding or linking to the collaboration discussion on the article talk page.--Kubigula (talk) 04:03, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Created, I'll alert all of our active members. T Rex | talk 19:12, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] School importance ratings

I notice that several of us have been doing some of the "importance" ratings (i.e. top, high, mid and low) for Virginia articles. It's a subjective system and only provides a general and non-binding guide for the project's priorities. That being said, I've been thinking about a systematic way to rate the many school articles. It's a potential can of worms, but I'm generally thinking that the three iconic state schools - UVA, VA Tech and William & Mary should be rated top importance, the other colleges and universities should be high importance, the high schools should be mid, and anything below high school could be low. Any specific school with a particular history (either shorter or longer) could obviously be upgraded or downgraded as the case may be. Anyone have any thoughts or objections to this general ratings structure?--Kubigula (talk) 03:45, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA Review

Virginia is a current GA nominee, but it is currently on hold by me, pending the insertion of more references. You may see the full assessment on the talk page. Thank you. — Rudget speak.work 16:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Appalachian Mountains

I noticed on the talk page that this article is under the scope of several Wikiprojects for states through which the mountains run, such as Kentucky and North Carolina. Should Appalachian Mountains be included in Wikiproject Virginia? I think so. Sageofwisdom

[edit] Image source problem with Image:WPVA.png

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:WPVA.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:55, 23 January 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 (talk) 00:55, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Population figures

Please, get everyone to stick to a single year. Some pages claim to be using 2000, some 2006 census data, and Henry County gives different figures for the 2000 census (text & stats) that differ by 20%. I suspect the larger figure is 2006, but it may just be a typo.

Is there a preference? Yes, Year 2000 data should be preferred because all the stuff down in demographics (median income, race, yada yada yada) is all based on the 2000 figure.Lamabillybob (talk) 03:48, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Inglewood, Virginia

I have created an article for the town Inglewood. -WarthogDemon 19:24, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Or rather after discovering two towns, I have created Inglewood, Rockingham County, Virginia and Inglewood, Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The second one I can not find coordinates for, however it does contain some slight notability hopefully. -WarthogDemon 20:21, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] William Fleming, early Governor and possibly Chief Justice

Can somebody knowledgeable about early Virginia history sort out the discrepancy I found and commented on at Talk:William Fleming (governor)? Rigadoun (talk) 19:43, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Virginia: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 10 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the Notability project page or on my personal talk page. (I'm not watching this page however.) Thanks! --B. Wolterding (talk) 16:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Anyone feel like making a table or list?

If you have the time and the interest, Virginia Ratifying Convention could use a snazzy table of delegates who voted for and against ratifying the US Constitution. I don't know if you'd really want to list all 168 votes, or just a smaller table with just the votes of the more notable guys (i.e. those who already have Wikipedia articles).

The list of "ayes" and "noes" can be found here, beginning at the bottom of page 654. (The previous vote at the top of that page is not what we want.) Hope someone volunteers to do it; you'll probably learn a bit about Virginia history in the process. Extra credit if you list delegates by the county they represented, which would require a little more research. Cheers! —Kevin Myers 09:05, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
