[edit] Demographics

Unlike national enrollment rates Texas A&M has slightly more males than females enrolled. In the spring of 2007, A&M had 16,401 undergraduate females (48.25%) and 17,594 males (51.75%). Nationally females in 2005 made up 57 percent of all college enrollment. wider gaps between males and females are seen in A&M graduate schools, males consisting of 57.84 percent of masters students and 59.77 percent of phd students. The notable exception to this male/female trend is the the professional school, the vetenarian school. males consist of 73.86 percent of the school. Disproportional male enrollment in the Corps of Cadets, 1,844 males (89.04%) vs 227 females 10.96% contributes to this male heavy ratio. [edit] Religion

Although A&M has never been a religious school. Faith has always played a strong role with the student values. Many churches are located behind the bars of Northgate on a street called Church. St Mary's Catholic Church remains the largest catholic place of worship is on church street. http://www.theeagle.com/faithvalues/churches/index.htm On campus Texas A&M provides an "All Faiths Chapel" a place of worship for all students.

The school has a large Christian subculture, due in part due to the schools location within the "Bible belt" of America. While many national Christian organizations such as Campus Crusade for Christ, Intervarsity, and Beta Upsilon Chi have a presence at A&M, the school also has many local Christian organizations. Breakaway Ministries, with started as a small bible study in 1989, fills up around 4000 students every Tuesday in Reed Arena.[2] The Christian musicians, Shane Bernard and Shane Everett, of the contemporary Christian band Shane and Shane[3] and Chris Tomlin[4] began their careers at Breakaway. Res Week, or Resurrection Week, a collaboration betewen A&M Christian organizations with commemorates what Christians believe to be theresurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians at the University of Texas and Florida State have emulated A&M's resweek.[5] Members of the Christian Faculty Network, sponsors a Veritas Forum, an event that brings speakers from throughout America to discuss topics such as Evolution and the validity of the Bible to A&M.[6] New students may attend the Christian extended orientation, Impact.[7]

  • other religious beliefs

While the Christian organizations make up the majority of religious groups on campus at A&M, the school has a plethora of organizations representing those of other faiths. Jewish organziations include Aggie Jewish Women and the Hillel Jewish Student Association. people of other faiths also practice freely at A&M. Those of Buddhist beliefs have the: Buddhist Student Association, Korean Buddhist Association. Hindo students are represented by Hindu Students Council. Those of the Islamic faith can join the: Islamic Dialog Group and the Islamic Study Those of the Bahi faith may worship in the A&M Baha i Club. A&M also has a Pagan society http://pagans.tamu.edu/

Department of Philosophy and Humanities within The College of Liberal Arts offers a minor in religious studies. Popular courses within the minor include the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and Near Eastern and Oriental religions. http://clla.tamu.edu/majorsminors/minors/religious. Muslims

[edit] Politics

[1] Strong southern religious student body campus, also is a conservative bastion. Microsoft Encarta ranked Texas A&M as the ninth most conservative campus in the nation. http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/college/?article=10schoolsPoliticallyConservative07 Brazos county voted: for Bush. Though conservative, the A&M student body has not blindly voted Republican. Brazos county, elected Democratic incumbent and Aggie former student Chet Edwards into the US house of representatives despite Republican gerrymandering.

Texas A&M students do not significantly vote in municipal elections. Unpopular laws for housing have been implemented in Bryan, Texas. Part of this has to do with the fact that elections in Bryan and College Station occur when the student body is not in town http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2003/04/03/Opinion/High-Student.Voter.Turnout.Could.Impact.City.Election-514356.shtml http://gray.ftp.clickability.com/kbtxwebftp/election2007.html

[edit] Residential life

In the spring of 2007 26.4% of the undergraduate population lived on campus. Of the on campus residents, 55.6 percent were male. http://www.tamu.edu/opir/reports/ep/epsp2007_certified.pdf. Campus has three distinct housing sections: Northside, Southside and University Apartments.[1] Both the Northside and Southside areas contain traditional undergradutate dormitories. University apartments generally houses graduate, married, and single parent, though sophomore, juniors, seniors, and non traditional freshmen students are also allowed to apply. [8]

A&M has both are both single and co-educational undergraduate dormitories. Usually students of different genders live on alternate floors, although Corps dormitories and Hobby Hall are segregated by room..[9] Dorm styles vary; while most dorms offer indoor access to individual rooms, access to "balcony halls" rooms, comes from a balcony that runs on the outside of the building. Room sizes vary by building, and dorms with larger rooms including private or en-suite bathrooms, while dorms with smaller rooms have a common bathroom on each floor. Several dorms include a "substance-free" floor, where residents pledge to avoid bringing alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes into the dorm.[10]

Northside consists of 17 student dorms, including the two university honors dorms.[11] The dorms are located near Northgate, a College Station entertainment district featuring the popular bar, Dixie Chicken. Sbisa Dining Hall and The Underground provide dining services for Northside residents. Some dorms unofficially claimed tables within the Sbisa Dining Hall and many dorms congregate for dinner at a specific time each weekday.[12]

Southside contains dorms for members of the Corps and other students. Non-corps dorms in this area center around the Commons, a hub for student activities and dining services.[13] Southside has two Learning Living Communities, which allow freshmen to live in a cluster with other students who share common interests such as organizations or majors.[14]

Facilities for the Corps of Cadets are located in the Quadrangle, or "The Quad", an area comprised of coeducational dormitories, Duncan Dining Hall, and the Corps training fields.[15] The Corps Arches, a series of 12 arches that "[symbolize] the undying spirit of the 12th Man of Texas A&M", mark the entrance to the Quadrangle.[16] All cadets, except those who are married or who have had previous military service, must live in the Quad and have assigned roommates from the same unit and graduating class. Reveille, the Aggie mascot, lives with her handlers in the Quadrangle.[17]

[edit] RHA

A&M's residence hall association is the largest organization on campus. A big reason for the large size of the organization is the fact thatevery on campus resident is considered a member of the residence hall association. Dorms or "halls" has a democratically elected hall council that provides activities for student residents. http://reslife.tamu.edu Examples of this programing include "Hotard from hell" in wish the residences Hotard transform their dorm into a haunted house. http://www.rha.tamu.edu-a.googlepages.com/ Two delegates from every dorm meet biweekly in an RHA meeting to vote on affairs pertaining to on campus residents. http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2003/02/18/Opinion/Students.Misrepresented-514735.shtml

In 2004 Texas A&M's residence hall association, the largest in the state, won school of the year at the Texas Residence Hall Association Annual Conference. http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2004/04/13/News/Am.Honored.As.School.Of.The.Year.At.Rha.Conference-658466.shtml Another organization that represents each hall is the National Residence Hall Honorary. http://nrhh.tamu.edu/ The university also owns apartment style living area's,

[edit] Dining

[edit] Residential dining

Texas A&M provides a wide variety of meals on campus are provided by the department of dining services formerly food services. Dining services operated like a business and is expected to earn money every year. In the fall of 2007, a new meal plan will be implemented on campus. http://food.tamu.edu/mealplans/signup0708.html

Unlike many schools where dining halls are attached to each dorm, Dining facilites are centrally located for all southside and northside halls. Non corps members living on southside may dine in two areas, the commons denominator. Thge Commons dining hall dining hall provided meals for students until the summer of 2004 due to lack of demand, and expensive plumbing problems. As of the fall of 2006, a coffee shop called studio 12 has opened in place of the old dining area. The old buffet area has a new dining facility as of spring 2007 called tomato bar with provides organic meal options.

Corps of cadets members are expected to eat at facility dedicated for corps dining, Duncan dining hall. Cadets are expected to eat in a regimented way called "square meals". Duncan also has a bakery with provides pasteries throughout campus. While the Duncan dining hall is closed to the general student body for breakfast and dinner, it is open for all students for lunch.

Sbisa dining hall is a buffet style dining on, Northside dining. The dining hall, ?? The largest in the nation ?? can seat up to ??? people. it has was constructed in ???? as a replacement for an old castle like dining facility, Sbisa can even be seen in the world war 2 propaganda film, never been licked. Sbisa has gone though many renovations throughout the years the newest being in 2000? The main buffet area consists of the largest part of the dining area. However, on the west side of the building there are 2 separate dining establishments, the Underground, a large food court, and Bernees, a sandwich/ coffee shop. http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2004/06/01/News/Sbisa.Cited.For.Health.Violations-683801.shtml

Students living on northside often choose to eat off campus due to the residential area's proximity to the Northside entertainment district. Local resturants on campus feature, the original Freebirds World Burrito a resturant chain that has spread to many locations thoughout texas and Burger Boy, a resturant found on Sports Illustrated Must Eat at before you graduate. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/sioncampus/09/24/100_things0930/ http://www.burger-boy.com/ Many national resturant chains are also found on northgate as Dominios, and Starbucks.

Texas A&M holds the record for the number of chick flas on a university campus, four.

While the university provides a variety of dining facilities, non-Corps students are not required to purchase a meal plan. [18]

[edit] Non Residential Area Dining

Dining facilities are also found close to classes and in the Memorial Student Center. The engineering area has a foot court called Pie are Square, in the ____ building. West campus's foot court is called the ag cafe. Small dining areas are located within major buildings such as the Zachary Snackary found in the Zachary Engineering building. Coffee facilities for students studying are in libraries. The coffee place Poor Yorks is located at the Evan's Library and Time Out Cafe at the Medical School Library.

The Memorial Student Center operates three dining facilities. The 12th man area is divided into two parts. The Twelfh Man International section with provides foods from around the globe including Japanese Sushi and Greek Gyros. The hullabalou food court down stairs not only provides traditional dining facilities, but also has a bowling rink, pool tables, and has an arcade version of Dance Dance Revolution. Rumors is a combination sandwich/ coffeehouse.

Recent experiments by dining services may lead to long term dining changes on campus. In the spring of 2007, a farmers market was opened on thursdays.

[edit] University Apartments

[edit] Off Campus

Popular, off campus dormitories include: the cambridge, with also houses the woman's soccer team and the baseball team, and the Tradition on Northgate in with the football team is housed http://www.livethetradition.com/. http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2003/10/24/News/Athletic.Teams.Score.New.Housing-538497.shtml

[edit] Activities

The University's first organization was the Corps of Cadets. However the number of organizations at Texas A&M has expanded to over 800 student organizations, including academic, service, religious, Greek, and common interest organizations. The main sets of student organizations are run by the office of the dean of student life controls two subsets of organizations, The department of student activities, and the MSC student programs office. Department of student activities

The department of student activities maintains of the bulk of the organizations on campus. It is responsible for recognizing and financing new student organizations. Within the department includes the Student Government, the extended orientation programs, fish camp, t camp and howdy camp, the Vocal Music department. http://studentlife.tamu.edu/agoss/resources/organizations.htm The Corps of Cadets MSC

The MSC students programs office consists of 26 committees. These committees provide activities and programs for the student body as a whole. The MSC has its own student government association type organization called class councils. the msc runs the fall leadership conference uniting 100 of the top student leaders on campus. http://flc.tamu.edu/

While the majority of student organizations are organized by the MSC and department of student activities, several organizations work outside those department. Dormitory life is run by the department of Residence life and the student organization RHA governs it. Texas A&M club teams report to the department of Recsports. and the Varsity Athletics program are run by separate departments. Greek life. . . .. Corps of Cadets. . . ..

Orientation programs encourage students to become involved in campus activities and organizations from the beginning.[19] An April 2005 campus survey found that 74% of the students were currently involved with at least one organization and that 88% participated in a campus organization in the past.[20]

[edit] Student government

The official voice of the student body at Texas A&M is theStudent Government Association. (SGA), one of A&M's largest organizations, consists of 1,200 student members in 3 branches, 14 committees, and 4 commissions. SGA has changed little since 1972, except its relative position within the official framework of the university.[21] Student Government is under the Department of Student Activities located in the Koldus Building.

Several secondary student governance associations also create policy that effects the student body. Each graduating class is represented its own Class Councils with is sponsored by the MSC. Class councils have the distinction of organizing the class gift for the year. Many Texas A&M traditions are centered around raising funds for the class gift such as: pull out shirts, Maroon out, Boot Dance, and Ring Dance. Class gifts of years past include the the prominent signs at Kyle field that say "Welcome to Aggieland" and "Home of the Twelfth Man" (class of 1988 and 1993), fish pond (class???) with was built by the class of ???? renovated by the class of ???? and will have future renovations with funds from the graduating class of class of 2007. Senators are elected to represent the constituencies of all the colleges on campus, both north and south side, off campus students and the corps of cadets. http://aggietraditions.tamu.edu/classgifts/

Other prominent student body governance organizations include: the graduate student council, and the Residence hall association. Traditions at A&M are regulated by the traditions council at Texas A&M. Faculty members also have their own Faculty Senate. Due to legistation in ???? one student from the Texas A&M System is chosen to represent the student body in the university system board of regents.

Student elections are a big event on campus. Beginning the Week after spring break, election campaigning begins. Not only do students vote on the student body president and student senate members, RHA governing members, yell leaders candidates, the class gift for the junior class, various constitutional changes, as well as fees are also issues in these elections. Election regulations do not allow signs to be posted unattended for, thus campus is filled with student campaigners hold signs throughout the campaign weeks. Election regulations are strictly enforced on campus. in the 2006 election, a large block of student senate candidates were disqualified for a major infraction in election rules.

[edit] Leadership organizations

[edit] Corps of Cadets

The Corps of Cadets (or the Corps) is the oldest organization on campus. Until 1965, Corps membership was mandatory at this Senior Military College. It is the United States' largest uniformed student body outside the service academies. As of fall 2006, the co-ed Corps boasts an enrollment of 2,318 cadets, in two Air Force Wings, two Army Brigades, and two Navy and Marine Regiments, as well as The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, whose members may be affiliated with any military branch,[22]. Many members participate in ROTC programs and earn commissions in the United States Armed Forces upon graduation.[23]

The Corps welcomed female members in the fall of 1974[24] and

[1] Composed of cadets are called "Keepers of the Spirit" for their involvement in many campus organizations.[25] Parson's Mounted Cavalry is the only mounted ROTC unit in the United States.[26]

The Ross Volunteer Company, the oldest student-run organization in the state, is the official honor guard for the Governor of Texas.[27] The Fish Drill Team, a precision, close-order rifle drill team comprised entirely of Corps freshmen, represents the Corps and A&M in local and national competitions. They have won the national championship almost every year since their creation in 1946, and have appeared in several Hollywood productions with prominent roles in the movies A Few Good Men and Courage Under Fire.[28]

[edit] Greek life

Greek organizations are relatively young at Texas A&M. The first Fraternity?? opened up at A&M in 197?. Though young, 10? percent of the student body is part of a greek organization. These include:??

The student body has shown some hostility toward the Greek culture. http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2002/11/15/Opinion/Working.For.A.Good.Cause-514956.shtmlThough hostility levels are not as strong as it was in the past, Shirts such as "Rent a friend, join a frat" were not a uncommon sight on campus. In ????, an attempt to create a Greek football seating block, similar to schools with older Greek organizations such as The University of Alabama, was meet with strong disapproval from the student body.

Several non hellentic Fraternities and Sororities have also formed in recent years.

[edit] Service

Aggie students participate in a plethora of service activities. The Big Event, the largest one-day student-run service project in America, originated at A&M. Students disperse across the Bryan College Station area to assist local residents, allowing students to thank their local community.[29] The organization CARPOOL, a student run, safe ride program has provided over 100,000 free rides, as of January 2007, to Aggies unable to transport themselves home. Its organizers also assist other universities in establishing similar programs.[30] The Texas A&M Habitat for Humanity campus chapter organizes the event, Shack-a-thon. Organizations bid on 11-12 spots to build "shacks" at Rudder Plaza. Participating organizations sleep in the shacks for 4 nights and performance organizations such as the Singing Cadets perform during the day. In 2005, A&M to organized a Relay For Life, a fundraiser for cancer treatment research. While the university was the last school in the Big 12 Conference, in its first year, A&M participants broke national records both in number of participants and funds raised. http://dmc-news.tamu.edu/templates/?a=4361&z=0

The Corporation for National and Community Service listed A&M among the 500 academic institutions in the 2005-06 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.[31]

[edit] Jobs

[edit] Entertainment

[edit] The arts

Aggie artistic expression has been at a&m even during the corps era of this school. Music has been performed by organizations at such as the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and the Singing Cadets have performed since the early Corps days at A&M. Visual and performing arts have come much later on campus.

[edit] Music

One of the oldest student organizations, the Singing Cadets, founded in 1893 are known as the "Voice of Aggieland". The Singing Cadets are an all-male choral group with 70 members. Today, Corps membership is not required to join the Singing Cadets. The group travels nationally and has completed several international tours; most recently, South America in 2007.[32][33]

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band's Bugle Rank lads the band at halftime at a football game.
The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band's Bugle Rank lads the band at halftime at a football game.

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, the world's largest precision military marching band, provides music for University and Corps functions and presents intricate halftime performances at football games.[27] Some band drills are so complicated that they require band members to step between each other's feet to complete the maneuvers.[34] These drills must be drawn by hand since their computer program returns an error because it requires two people to be in the same spot at the same time.[35]

Many Music organizations have been formed after corps of cadets membership became voluntary. The department of choral activities, the organization in wish the singing cadets are under, asl includes Womans Chorus, an all female choir, the century singers, a mixed gender choir, and the Reveliers, a vocal jazz, pop and swing ensemble. http://studentactivities.tamu.edu/choralactivities/. Non corps of cadet bands fall under the university bands catagory. These bands include Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensembles http://tamubands.tamu.edu/. The Athletics department maintains band called Hullabaloo with plays at basketball and volleyball games. Hullabaloo is divided into two ensembles, the "Maroon" band and the "White" band with alternate between games. http://www.aggieathletics.com/index2.php?&CAT=SUPRT&pageID=1165

Several Student organizations that perform music. Percussion studio is a percussive ensemble performance group.http://www.percussionstudio.org/. . . Aggie Mariachi performs Latin music.

Aggie students have formed many local bands many of who perform at the Northgate music festival.

[edit] Performing Arts

Several organizations promote visual and performing arts arts

Most notably is the Aggie Wranglers. swing cats. . . .

MSC committee OPAS part of the brings in broadway style plays to A&M throughout the school year. Recent plays include:

The student organizations in the performing arts include the Aggie players. MSC town hall. Fruedian slip is an improv comedy group.

The first half of First yell, and event organized by the Yell Leaders on campus before the first Midnight Yell is a big performance of many of the student organizations. The second half of the show includes a comedy show. The comedians Bill Cosby and Wayne Brady have performed at First Yell.

[edit] visual arts

The university maintains several Art galleries on campus. The MSC supports three of these. J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries. .... . MSC Forsyth Center Galleries MSC Visual Arts Gallery is run by the MSC organization MSC Visual wars. http://stark.tamu.edu/calendar.html

The Texas A&M Horticulture department has a Texas A&M Benz School of Floral Design within it. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/benz/index.html it's main gallery is in the Horticulture buliding at M. Benz Gallery of Floral Art.

In edition to university support, the Arts Council of Brazos Valley supports many of the arts organizations on campus

Despite being the flagship institution in the Texas A&M University System, a criticism of a&m is the fact that A&M does not have a explicit fine arts program. However, Texas A&M has a strong architecture program with a graduate level visualization program with alumni working with companies such as Pixar and Dreamworks Animation.

[edit] Sports

As a Division 1A school within the Big XII athletic conference, collegette athletic events are popular entertainment events at A&M. American Football is one of the oldest sports on campus??? Many of the traditions of Texas A&M center around the football field such as Midnight Yell practice. A&M's football stadium, Kyle field, has the largest student section, also known as the 12th man, in America. and ??? states one of the best too.

Collegette Baseball also has been traditionally a favorite sporting event at Texas A&M. A&M's baseball field olsen field was ranked by sports illustrated as the top collegette baseball atmosphere in America.

Basketball has also been popular at Texas A&M. in the 1980's A&M's old basketball stadium G Rolle Colliseum was called the holloring house on the Brazos. Lack of success in the 1990's however led to sharp decreases in student attendance at basketball games. A new basketball arena, Reed Arena, opened in ????. Attendence however did not fill the stadium until the basketball turnaround in the success of the current men's basketball team University of Kentucky coach Billy Gillespie and the womans team by Gary Blair. Recent successes have led to record attendence levels at A&M basketball games. Problems of distribution of student tickets have become a hot debated issue within the student body.

Non football events are also popular entertainment. A&M students have broken attendance records in sports that tend to have low attendence rates nation wide such as tennis, woman's soccer, woman's volleyball, swimming. The 12th man rewards program has been a cause this. The 12th man rewards program encourages student attendence to games by providing a stamp card that records every non football athletics events. Critics call the rewards program bribery and that the program has led to inflated attendance numbers.
