[edit] Zhongzheng Memorial
Are you guys okay with having Zhongzheng Memorial as the image for our project banner? I thought it was one the more symbolized structure of Taiwan. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 17:28, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Something more 'Taiwan' would be better. Wenzi 00:38, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Personally, I prefer Taipei 101. CKS Memorial is the symbol of Taiwan's past, the martial law era, and I think we should go with something that symbolizes the future of Taiwan. 23:49, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Can you get rid of the Chiang Kao-shek Memorial? Is the WikiItaly page fronted by a pic of Mussolini? There are so many things that can symbolize Taiwan. Localization movements have focused on nature, especially Jade Mountain (Yu Shan). A nice pic of that would make a much better statement about Taiwan. If you want something recognized, go with Taipei 101. But CKS? He shot thousands of people in Taiwan.... Michael Turton
- Let's not get into the Chiang Kai-Shek topic. I agree your opinion. The picture is now changed back. If the user tries to change it back again, we will try to get the template protected. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 19:31, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Chiang Kai-shek was an honorable man who protected the Free Republic of China. He should be respected and not compared to Mussolini. You guys should not make controversial comments like that Alex678 01:56, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, the Neo-Nazi groups also respect Hitler and his Nazi party. Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, and you really can't tell them what to do or what to think. Kc0616 11:23, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Selected articles/pictures on Portal page
Hi, can anyone come up with a way that everyone can add/edit items for upcoming:
- Selected article
- Selected biography
- Selected picture
- Did you know
So that we have a monthly selection prepared at least 3 months in advance? — Nrtm81 10:08, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Can we organize it the way it is organized in Portal:China right now? AQu01rius (User • Talk) 21:35, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. Can you change the templates so that it functions like Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 2006. So that selected articles/biography/picture will display automatically each month (or every day, if anyone is dedicated enough to find and add articles in advance). — Nrtm81 02:29, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
It's already set that way, but I just fixed the title so it's more clear. Should we put a article nomination place, or just discuss next month's selected page in talk pages? AQu01rius (User • Talk) 07:35, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've just created Wikipedia:WikiProject Taiwan/Selected articles. How about a page like that? If it's not good, then you can list it for speedy deletion. — Nrtm81 09:08, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ethnicities in Taiwan
71.106.149.53 keeps deleting this image from Demographics of Taiwan. He says it is inaccurate and accuses it of being PRC propaganda. Is it incorrect to call Hakka and Minnan people Han Chinese? And is the image violating NPOV? — Nrtm81 06:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- OK, maybe that guy is a nut, he's gone off to write "non-Han Chinese" in Hakka and Hoklo people. I hate it when people get all political... — Nrtm81 07:06, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I uploaded a newer image at Commons which replaced "Han Chinese" with just "Chinese". I hope it's OK, since that seemed to be the only issue that person had over the image. If there's any objection please leave me a message on my talk page. — Nrtm81 22:53, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- Anyone ever look at this page? lol. There's a bigger issue now, see Talk:Taiwanese people. There is a view that Taiwanese (Hoklo & Hakka) are no longer Chinese and should be regarded seperately as "Taiwanese" and not Chinese. I think it's based on the claim that over 88% of Taiwanese have aboriginal blood. If anyone in Taiwan can find the research or any source to support this claim, please help out. — Nrtm81 01:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
This problem still exists. I suggest the articles that are controversial be semi-protected, such as:
There is an anonymous user who is definitely pushing a POV agenda. I noticed his recent edits in Demographics of Taiwan, where he has changed the text under Nationality which said Taiwanese are officially "Chinese citizens" (fact) to "Taiwanese citizens". Other things is to change anything "Chinese" to "Taiwanese" such as the population of ROC is 98% Taiwanese instead of 98% Chinese — Nrtm81 04:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
The Taiwanese are not officially Chinese citizens, and being a Chinese citizen is not an ethnicity. It would be better to use the systems used by the locals themselves, who divide Taiwan into four broad groups, Mainlanders (post-1945 Chinese immigrants), Taiwanese (pre-1945), Hakkas, and aborigines. The term "Taiwanese" is confusing because it can designate any or all those groups. -- Michael Turton
Yes, Michael Turton is correct and the diagram above is not. What the diagram actually refers to is racial--and not really existing ethnic--divisions/classes. My suspicion is that the creator of this diagram was him/herself a "Han Chinese" who wanted to push a POV agenda to obscure or cover over the classification Michael Turton mentions is normally used by locals (i.e., 外省人,臺灣人,客家人,原住民), and which classifies ethnicity on the basis of one's mother-tongue (and not his/her racial origin). It's unfortunate, but many Chinese are racists. Nostalgiphile 00:00, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Awards
User:Miborovsky have created this image (see left) a while ago. While it's unsuitable for WikiProject China, I think it will suit perfectly for WikiProject Taiwan. It combines together the Wikipedian barnstar and the Blue Sky White Sun Medal of Honor together. Should we use this image for our awards template? AQu01rius (User • Talk) 01:13, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:30, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Didn't see an ROC BoNM, so I made one. It was pretty tricky to make, too:

This is a test of the barnstar system. Had this been a real barnstar, you would have been notified. Ling.Nut 22:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC) |

Awesome. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 23:04, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Looks good -- but I'd also recommend having a version that would be akin to the shape of Taiwan like the one on the DPP flag, and perhaps one more that somehow harmonizes the colors blue and green, as variations. --Nlu (talk) 23:16, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

-
- That's what all the barnstars of this type are called. Here's what to type: {{subst:BoNM-ROC2|message ~~~~ }} --Ling.Nut 13:17, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
(undent) to avoid fistfights etc. I'm just gonna take out the word "national." That should be safe. --Ling.Nut 16:15, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- It is my opinion that removing "National" is in fact POV (since it then put ROC at a lower stature than PRC), and with Ling.Nut's consent, I've reverted the two templates. Even if one believes that ROC's not a "nation" now, it clearly was for much of its history. --Nlu (talk) 17:08, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright image tag
The Republic of China Copyright Code, article 50 state:
以中央或地方機關或公法人名義公開發表之著作,在合理範圍內,得重製或公開播送。[1]
I think that there should be a image copyright/fair use tag to tag the ROC governmental images with this explanation (which I would translate as "Works publicly published under the authorship of a central government or local government agency, or of a public legal person, may be reproduced or publicly transmitted within reasonable bounds"), but I don't deal a whole lot with images and templates. Perhaps someone might be interested in taking a stab at it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nlu (talk • contribs) 17:34, 10 January 2007 (UTC).
[edit] Naming Conventions
I think we should have different naming conventions than the ones in WP:China. It is confusing sometimes, because most of the people have their family names presented first, but some are presented last, such as Chien-Ming Wang. The names of the Taiwanese people are different from the names of the Chinese people, the Taiwanese names have a dash in between. So I think we should create new naming conventions for Taiwanese people.--Jerrypp772000 02:21, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
- The Chinese Naming Conventions mentions about the use of Wade-Giles, so it shouldn't be that confusing. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 01:19, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall: Why does this article have a high importance for Taiwan? I don't think it's that important, I mean it might be important to the ROC but this is WikiProject Taiwan.--Jerrypp772000 23:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- Wow how ironic. Jerry says that Republic of China is equal to Taiwan. Then he says SYS Memorial Hall is important for the ROC but this is wikiproject Taiwan, meaning that he admits Taiwan and the ROC is not equal. How ironic. You hypocrite. Alex678 23:54, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- I never said they were equal.--Jerrypp772000 00:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

- Please stop assuming bad faith. I never "implied" anything like that, if you are so sure, where are the evidence. Wikipedia community is getting tired of my POV, since when did anybody told me that? I never said I am pro-DPP, so please stop saying things that are untrue, and stop insulting me, thank you.--Jerrypp772000 19:04, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

- A lot of people don't like user boxes (myself included) which is why they were moved out of project space into user space. I personally don't think they should be promoted on WikiProject pages. --Ideogram 21:52, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Um, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but the "Blue Sky with a White Sun" logo you used is not the emblem of the Republic of China, but the emblem of the Kuomintang. Also, in a complex political enviroment like the Taiwan topic, it is best to avoid the use of any national-related materials. Use a picture of the Taiwan island or picture of a aborigine would be better. Aquarius • talk 21:28, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
- I also don't like this emblem. It is too pro-KMT and this is supposed to be a politically-neutral project. ludahai 魯大海 05:14, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Translation dept
I think we can create an interwiki department that helps translate articles from other languages. I created WikiProjects of Taiwan on the Chinese and Simple English Wikipedia. I am not a good translator but others can help. Isn't this a good idea?--Jerry 20:19, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I think a translation department should be attached to WP:CHINA since that will probably attract more participants. --Ideogram 21:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
-
- I think it can be attached to both. I'm not only talking about English-Chinese translation, there can be other languages as well.--Jerry 21:41, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
I just noticed that WP:CHINA already had a translation department (how could I not know that?). So I created one for this project.--Jerry 21:44, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- The WikiProject Taiwan on the Simple English Wiki needs more members, can someone help me out?--Jerry 01:14, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Taiwanese people by county
Hi, I noticed that there don't seem to be categories by administrative subdivision for people from Taiwan (e.g. analogous to Category:American people by state), any reason? I'm considering creation and population of a Category:Taiwanese people by county or something, but I wanted to be sure of the exact structure and nomenclature before I started this, since I suspect I may be opening up a large can of worms here:
- Should the form be "People from" or "People of"?
- Should this include direct-controlled cities and municipal cities alongside the counties (e.g. "People from Kaohsiung")? If so, is it necessary to change the name of the parent "Taiwanese people by county" to reflect this somehow?
- Should there be an intermediate level of "People from Taiwan province" and "People from Fujian province", or should the Fujian counties be put directly under the parent as well?
- "People from Matsu/Quemoy" or "People from Lienchiang county/Kinmen county"?
- Should the county names be suffixed with "Taiwan", "Taiwan province/Fujian province", "Republic of China", or something else?

[edit] WPTAIWAN project banner
This banner now inserts an extra blank line after it, which doesn't fit with the other project banners. Also, at least one option, politics=yes, places what looks like another independent WikiProject banner below. [edit] Republic of China on Taiwan
I think the article's title is somewhat poor - it sounds like Chinglish. Ideogram says that it is a commonly used term in Taiwan and elsewhere, but I was wondering what the literal translation of the Chinese term is and whether we could come up with a more "polished" title. It may sound fine to people whose first language is not English, but it doesn't to someone like myself - something like "based in Taiwan" makes much more sense.
-
- I've created Republic of China based on Taiwan as a redirection, in case you ever want to use it.--Damifb 20:51, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
If there were any concerns over people searching for "Republic of China on Taiwan", the re-direct would take care of that. John Smith's 09:45, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- I didn't like it either. As I had pointed out on the talkpage, I think the ROC on Taiwan sounds more like a concept and not a period of time. Although I know it's common, I think renaming the article Taiwan Post-War Period would be better.--Jerry 10:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am hoping someone can help with this. I am attempting to write an article on the New Formosa Band, which is requested at WP:AR1. There is very little written about them in English - here, here and here is a little information in English. They seem to have been a part of an entire genre, Hakka (music), which doesn't have an article yet. But Google turns up almost nothing in English. However, under their character name 新寶島康樂隊, I get a lot of hits on Google, but I don't speak a lick of this language. Can anyone help me with putting together an article that will survive AfD? [edit] Dan Jacobson (Taiwan)
Can anyone look over this article and its sources? The article is written/translated by the subject, which by itself is not a reason for deletion. But it also makes a number of claims of the kind "Jacobson promoted X → X happened" with the implication that X happened because Jacobson promoted them. It would also be helpful to comment on whether the subject is as known in Taiwan as the article makes it sound. Thanks. ~ trialsanderrors 04:41, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- I second trialsanderrors's concerns. The article does provide links to reference material. Please let me know whether the linked reference material is independent of Dan Jacobson and those connected with Dan Jacobson. [edit] Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested
Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 14:21, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Manhua
Does anyone have any objection to me proposing addition of manhua to the scope of WikiProject Comics' world comics work group? I can't find any cohesive group working on manhua in any wikiproject. I had a terrible time just finding a manhua infobox template. :) I figured the comics project's brand-new world comics group would be a good place to serve as a manhua hub. What do you guys think? Thanks for your feedback! --hamu♥hamu (talk) 02:52, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
