[edit] Guidelines
Hello WikiProject Sussex participants,
Just a line that I've added som trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles to this project's mainspace. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, Wikipedia:WikiProject Kent, Wikipeadia:WikiProject Somerset amongst many others.
It is in this capacity I've considered it a fair rationale to add these. I hope it's not contentious in any way! Best of luck with the project! -- Jza84 · (talk) 11:04, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Museums in Sussex
Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Sussex. Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 14:14, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Rod, I have added your project banner to Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, Marlipins Museum, Petworth Cottage Museum and Weald and Downland Open Air Museum. I may well get around to creating articles for the red links. Regards The Menace (talk) 13:41, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Front page redesign
I think we can admit that this project is inactive. For example, we have 266 articles flagged compared with Kents 1381. In the last few days I have been fixing the Sussex project templates which had a few bugs. It was the museum request above that reminded me that this project exists.
I propose that we can tidy up the main page, by removing the bits that imply an active project, such as ToDo lists and Collaboration of the week. This way, it will not look abandoned, discouraging new members. Test revamp deleted

- Hi MortimerCat, I completly agree about the project being inactive, hopefully we might be able to get it up and running again and encourage more members to join. Your revamp is much better, the current project page just looks cluttered and may confuse any potential members. Regards.... The Menace (talk) 19:35, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

- I was quite excited when I first discovered WikiProjects, but that slowly turned to disappointment as I realised that they are mostly maintained by a single person! Thats why I think a project should not oversell itself. It would be great to have collaborations of the week but you need a quite a few active members. MortimerCat (talk) 20:57, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Photograph request
I have added a new parameter to the Sussex project template needs-photo=yes A useful category for any Sussex based keen photographers, like myself, looking for targets to shoot. The full list of parameters reproduced below. MortimerCat (talk) 22:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
{{WikiProject Sussex|class=?|importance=?|unref=?|nested=yes|needs-photo=yes}}
They will appear in the category Category:Sussex-related articles requiring photo
[edit] New front page & Membership drive
I am not sure about my redesign, but as Wikipedia says "Be bold" I went for it. Its not really a redesign, I just removed all the extraneous stuff, plus fixed a lot of the links and wording. Some of the project pages were pointing to the London Underground!
For the next few weeks, whilst in the mood, I will be active on the project, assessing and commenting on the Sussex project articles. I finally did the two that were requested last year. I don't think we should do a mass "adding the Sussex template" drive unless we get a few active members. If any one wants to help out, I think the priority should be the existing Sussex flagged articles. MortimerCat (talk) 21:31, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- It certainly is an improvemnet from the last design. As for getting a few more active members, I noticed one WikiProject similar to ours (can't remember which one it was), obviously went through articles looking at who had made significant contributions and left an invitation message on their talk page, do you think it's worth doing this? Regards. The Menace (talk) 11:46, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Before we start spamming people we need something for our new members to do. A long list of names is lovely but does not achieve much. In my experience, collaborating on a single article does not work well. Half the members are not interested in the chosen subject, half the members do not have ready access to any information, half the members prefer to work on their own pet project, half the members are too busy that week. (Thats 200% of the members not able to participate).
I would be in favour of a recruiting campaign if we can find a large and worthwhile task for members to do. Something where we could provide all the information initially so members could start straight away. For example, adding an infobox to all the Sussex villages, populating it with facts from various websites that we provide links to. I have no idea if such a task exists. [edit] Worthing No. 2
I just came across a new page Worthing No. 2. Looks like a copy of Worthing. Can someone from this project please investigate and determine if this is legit or garbage. Derek Andrews (talk) 15:00, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] East Sussex Sub-project
As per Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements Hamlets that are within another parish or council ward could have their own articles, but if there is no more than a couple of paragraphs that could be said about the hamlet it may be best practice to merge the articles.
It has been noticed that there are numerous one line articles about individual hamlets within East Sussex. Over the last few days, a few have been merged into the Civil Parish article. There have been no protests so I thought I would announce this as a general Sussex Project.
East Sussex has three districts, Wealden, Hastings and Lewes (district). These are showing the official Parishes as per the councils website. Category:Villages in East Sussex is a good place to find the one liners.
First stage is to add the {{mergeto|PARISH}} to the one-liner. Unfortunately, you need to replace PARISH with the actual parish link. Heres a good site Election maps. Do a local authority search for Wealden, Lewes or Rother to get the district. Find the hamlet, and turn on the Parish layer.
There are some villages, whilst not parishes, that do have large articles such as Glynde and Nutley, East Sussex. These, of course, we will not merge, we would use the {{main}} template instead.

[edit] Research source
I've found this website which seems to be a good source of material for Kent, Sussex and Surrey articles. Mjroots (talk) 18:44, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
