[edit] Portal:Sikhism
Hi - I think there is an immediate need for major upgrading of this portal, and its something we can do quickly as a team. It won't be ambitious to even make it an WP:FPORT. This Fire Burns Always 20:22, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- What do you have in mind? I don't think we have enough articles or structure yet to the Sikhism articles to begin making a good portal. But, I'm not sure. :) Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:46, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think having several FAs (I don't really know) is a problem, but we need to keep updating the articles, DYKs, pictures and format everything properly. In any case, the portal does need upgrading even if we don't go for FPO. This Fire Burns Always 23:09, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Public domain sources
As far as I am aware, MacAauliffe's monumental "The Sikh Religion - Its Gurus Sacred Writings and Authors" was first published in 1909 and is now in the public domain. Volume 1 of 6 is digitised here [1] and we can use the information it contains. I also have a print edition (2004 reprint). Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:29, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

- Hi Sukh, You may be interested in this link which lists many hundreds of books on Sikhs at this link here, which is an Indian site called: Digital Library of India. The interface uses "PTIFF" format which can be read by Quicktime from Apple. The interface is rather cumbersome but this site gives you access to huge number of "old" english books. With some pages and the PRO version of Quicktime, the info can be saved locally. Have a look - Please let me know what you think?
-
- I am looking for a better PTIFF reader to use with this site - I wonder if you know of one. Anyway, Happy Reading but make sure you give those eyes a rest now and then!!! Best regards, --Hari Singh 01:11, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Opinions requested
Opinions on the contributions of an anon editor at Bhatra would be much appreciated. The issues include re-inserting copyvios, making refs point to unreferenced additions etc., but please also see the talk page, the history and this diff: [2]. I'm not familiar with Sikh scripture and literature and this makes it harder for me to work on the section about Bhatra origins. Hoping it's OK to post this request here and thanks for any help. --HJMG 08:48, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Turban (Sikhism)
Hello; I hope this is the right place to mention this. I've noticed that the Turban (Sikhism) page is in considerable need of a thorough cleanup; someone else added the cleanup tag to the article itself, but I've listed on its talk page half a dozen problems that I can see with it. As I say there, I am not really qualified to carry out the necessary editing myself, and as I also say there may well be other more specialist problems I haven't even noticed, but hopefully those with more knowledge than me can improve the article. (In case you're wondering, I wanted to read about the patka (as worn by Monty Panesar), but the relevant section of the article doesn't actually explain even what it is!) [edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Translation
need some punjabi translators and scripts--D-Boy 08:21, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Religious leaders
The current organization there is abit muddled, and needs some discussing how to deal with. A general proposal for cleaning it up is posted at Category talk:Religious leaders#Organization proposal, and more input would be great. It doesn't address the issue of Religious leaders/religious workers/religious figures, but that is another issue that exists. Badbilltucker 22:02, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Possible image change
Hi, do you think it would be a good Idea to change the Khanda in the Stub template to the Ek Onkar. Which would look like this
This Sikhism related article is a stub, you can help wikipedia by expanding it.
- This is just an idea I am throwing out there. — Seadog 15:41, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Assesment
I am currently in the process of trying to begin the assessment of the articles in the field of religion, and wonder whether the members of this project would want to have assessment parameters included in the existing project banner, as that is where the assessment wording generally takes place. Please indicate below whether the members of the project would approve of this or not. Thank you in advance for your responses, positive and/or negative. Badbilltucker 22:36, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards
Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 18:19, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject Religion
The group indicated above was recently revitalized for, among other things, the purpose of working on those articles whose content is such that the article does not fall within the scope of any particular denomination. To most effectively do this, however, we would benefit greatly if there were at least one member from this Project working on those articles. On that basis, I would encourage and welcome any member of this Project willing to work on those articles to join the Religion WikiProject. Thank you. Badbilltucker 14:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Jaswant Singh Khalra
HI All,
A Request for comment - please see Jaswant Singh Khalra. I added an Unbalanced tag on this months ago, and now the main author wants it removed, even though IMHO it is still unbalanced. Please can a few people pop over and give their opinion, this article needs some outside influence. User:Lethaniol
[edit] Taj Mahal RFC
- I've filed an RFC relating to the Taj Mahal at Talk:Taj Mahal#Request for Comment: Inclusion of minority points of view. Your comments would be most welcome. --Joopercoopers 11:10, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Woefully inadequate article
First off, I'm not a Sikh... but.
I thought the Jhatka article would have been a bit better. I cleaned it up a bit. I have a Sikh friend and I am interested to know what the average Sikh can and cannot eat. Thanks. Tenacious D Fans (talk) 18:14, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Articles needed
Hi. I see a few articles that we need. Obviously even quick stubs are better than nothing.
- Panj Piaré
- Asa-di-Var
- Karah Parsad
- Kavi-darbar
(These are all from Gurpurab.) Thanks. -- Writtenonsand 11:45, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think saroop could be added to that list. It's mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib, but no explanation as to what it is. Thanks! -Yupik 11:11, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Some of those are already here - try removing punctuation and alterting spelling. E.g. Panj Piare or Asa di Var. 87.194.38.9 16:40, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Need clarification on calendar.
Gurpurab says: "The birthday of Guru Nanak, ... usually comes in the month of November, but the date varies from year to year according to the lunar Indian calendar." I'd linke to link Indian calendar, but that page is a disambiguation page which links to:
- A variety of Hindu calendars, used for civil and religious purposes in India and other parts of Southeast Asia.
- The Indian national calendar, the secular calendar officially used by the Government of India.
-- Neither of these seems right to me. There's also a page on Sikh calendar. Should we change the text at Gurpurab to read "Sikh calendar"? Thanks. -- Writtenonsand 11:58, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Notifying edits to Gatka
I have been editing/expanding articles related to Indian martial arts for some time.
I found the Gatka article in this state and proceeded to edit it to this state.
The article was neglected despite being important to the Sikh faith and Indian martial arts. I thought I should notify my edits here.

Please discuss this in a discussion here--Sefringle 03:22, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] New project proposal
There is a new WikiProject task force proposal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Inter-religious content that is being proposed to deal specifically with articles whose content relates to several religious traditions. Any editors interested in joining such a group would be more than welcome to indicate their interest there. John Carter 15:09, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Improving article
Eastern religion is currently being improved. Please help bring this central topic article up to standard. Vassyana 03:55, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Template/Logo
I'm just a bit concerned about the addition of the logo on the corner to all the Sikhism pages. Has it been run past the members of the wikiproject? It's my understanding that at the moment only featured articles and protected pages have a logo in the top right hand corner. Any thoughts? Recurring dreams 06:17, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Categorization of articles
The guidelines for categorization at Wikipedia:Categorization#How to categorize an article, we are generally "placing articles only in the most specific categories they reasonably fit in." I have found that many of the articles relating to Sikhism are found not only in the parent Category:Sikhism, but one or more of its subcategories as well, which run contrary to this guideline and are also, to a degree, redundant. I am in the process of trying to get the majority of these articles to conform to the comment above. If anyone has any serious objection to my actions, they are free to revert the categorization. John Carter 15:48, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Sikhs on Capital Punishment
Hi
I am doing a GCSE project on capital punishment and would like to find out the Sikh religion views on this, are you able to help at all?
Thanks
J Perkins —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.56.223 (talk) 11:57, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
You won't get much help on this subject! Sikhs don't have any codified municiple law or anything like that.Their religious authority , Guru Granth Sahib contains the hymns and teachings of their Gurus.Matters relating to conduct of life and related matters are decided by Gurmatta and depend on individual choices. The Sikh religious system is not very rigid. It was founded to give life an opportunity to expand and not to encircle it.Ajjay (talk) 17:43, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Shaheed Bhai Haqiqat Rai
The article Shaheed Bhai Haqiqat Rai about the Sikh marytr has been tagged as a possible hoax, although from trawling around the net I'm pretty sure that it isn't a hoax the paucity of reference material in English has given credence to those who believe that its a hoax at worst and a "bed time story" at best. Can anyone with an understanding and an interest in this topic help add relevant details and references to the article.KTo288 11:38, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Merger proposal between Indian religion, Eastern religion, and Eastern philosophy
I have proposed a merge of these three articles. Please see Talk:Eastern philosophy#Merger proposal.
Also, for those of you who are Sikhs, I am sure you may find my claims about Sikhism there to be spurious. This disagreement is acceptable. Because nevertheless, I am sure you agree that Sikhism is not distinctly "Indian." Zenwhat (talk) 01:47, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Sanatan Singh Sabha
May I request an administrator, who can feel confident about the subject-matter of the article on Sanatan Singh Sabha, to visit the talk page of that article, and read A.S. Aulakh's objection [objection], and my response to it [response], and his reply to my response [reply]. I would request the learned administrator to check every single statement in my response by referring to the original article [The current article is the one edited by A.S. Aulakh]. If the administrator finds my response to the objection valid, and also finds the reply incoherent, then may I request the administrator to restore the original article. Thanks.Kanchanamala (talk) 10:16, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Sikh Politics
I am increasingly alarmed at the the distortion of Sikh topics by Indian Nationalists. If you look at the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalistan there are allegations that Sikhs that want an Independant country from India are all Pakistani agents or terrorists. The article has several allegations of terrorism added, there is a seperate article on Indian terrorism to discuss these. The overall article has been edited in a way as an attack on Pakistan using Sikh topics. There are many movements that have not been involved in violence that want Independence.
Information about Sikh Independance and human rights violations even when referenced are speedily deleted by some of the Indian editors on Wikipedia There seems to be an editors war between Indians and Pakistanis and Sikh topics are being caught up in this. On the discussion there are has racist remarks such as the word Khalsa (a term that is applied to othodox Sikhs) means laughter which is without foundation.
Another site which has Indian nationalist editors distorting is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurmit_Singh_Aulakh
Please can ensure that fair editing is restored on this, a few editors have tried to do this but are overruled. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Singhls (talk • contribs) 09:28, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Photo request
Surely with all the Sikhs we have on Wikipedia, someone can provide better photos for Kesh than the current one. Yes, it's made by the US federal government so it's free, but a) it only shows head coverings (not Kesh), and b) using this image makes Sikhs look like terrorists on a wanted poster. [edit] Expand {{Infobox church/sandbox}} to cover all places of worship?
There is a proposal to convert the draft infobox template {{Infobox church/sandbox}} into a template that can be used for all places of worship. We would like your views on whether you think this is a good idea, and if you are able to help identify parameters that would be relevant to the religion that your WikiProject deals with. Do join the discussion taking place at "Template talk:Infobox church". — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 03:52, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 2 articles that I recently added to WP-sikhism
I have just tagged two articles - Malaudh and Phulkian Sardars Sidhu-Brar bans. Both articles seem to be candidates for good articles. But, they might be copyvios and the style of the articles may need revision. Prashanthns (talk) 10:07, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] List of gurdwaras
I would looked over at List of gurdwaras page, it contains all information from other Gurdwara lists so I suggest that this be turned into a disambiguation page for the othe rgurdwara lists. Gman124 talk 21:34, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
