[edit] Peer reviews

There are several articles that have been nominated for a peer review. The Projects peer-review page can be accessed with the short cut WP:RUPR. Could people please review some of these articles! They can be directly accessed from the {{WPRU Announcements}} template (that's at the top of the page). Currently some of the articles have not been reviewed by anyone, and those that have it's only been one or two people. Please please can people help review some of these articles?!? Thanks. - Shudda talk 04:20, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Twickenham Stadium

Given that City of Manchester Stadium managed FA status without being especially long, does anyone think Twickenham Stadium would make a good collaboration of the fortnight? It probably needs to be expanded a bit, and a coy-edit plus references. Does anyone own, or have access to Twickenham: The History of the Cathedral of Rugby? - Shudda talk 11:27, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

This could be FA with a little work! Goldman07 16:37, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New collaboration of the fortnight

There is a new collaboration of the fortnight - Australia national rugby union team. I have added instructions on how to change the collaboration. I've done this because it seems that either others don't know how to change the collaboration, or aren't willing to (see here).

The last collaboration, France national rugby union team, has been nominated for good article status and was very successful with quite a few people contributing. Anyway hopefully the new one is successful; the nomination got the four necessary votes very fast so hopefully we get lots of contributors for this one as well. Anyway get contributing! - Shudda talk 10:37, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Churchill Cup

I was adding the England result to the Churchill Cup page and also updated the England Saxons squad page. I don't know very much about club rugby, but there are several players on the England Saxons page who don't have Wikipedia profiles, I was wondering if somebody who knows more about club rugby than me would be willing to create new profiles. [edit] France national rugby union team

France national rugby union team has passed GA (apparently without any problems). I had nominated it once the collaboration was over - so congratulations to all those people that contributed. It has clearly been one of our more successful collaborations. - Shudda talk 23:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

I have now requested a peer review. Please help with this by commenting here. - Shudda talk 00:55, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Italian and Georgian rugby sevens teams.

Hi, I have created the Italian national rugby union team (sevens) and Georgian national rugby union team (sevens) to accomodate for their recent participation in the 2007 London Sevens. These two articles need expanding by somebody who is more knowledgable about Georgian and Italian rugby than I am! Andy4226uk 08:49, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] France national rugby union team

France national rugby union team is now a GA, and I believe it's ready to be an Featured Article Candidate. There have been no comments at it's peer-review. So I have discussed this with GordyB and he agrees it's ready. Gordy is willing to nominate it and try and take the article through the FAC process, but we both think that the red-links may need to be fixed up. I have been creating some articles recently but would appreciate some help. They are nearly all biographical articles. I'm going to list them here, and hopefully everyone will create one or two each. Info can be found on most of these players on the net, but prob not much more then a stub for each one. Here is the list, in a rough order of priority:

Current squad:

Former coaches:

Also the list of notable players, although this may be culled in the FAC process (depending on comments). Thanks. - Shudda talk 23:12, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

This is actually not very difficult to do. If you don't know the player (and even if you do), all you need do is put the name into google and you should be able to find enough data to write a decent stub at least. If you use at least two sources and copyedit them thoroughly then there won't be any copyvio problems.GordyB 05:22, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I just did some. Someone should just give them a quick check for any mistakes or anything. Now we should do the notable former players. Goldman07 02:33, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
    • I don't think we should bother with notable players, or if we do we can do it whilst the FAC process is underway. One piece of advice, if people could include the {{Infobox Rugby biography}} template (used to be called {{rugger}}) that would be great, as would the Wikipedia:Persondata stuff. - Shudda talk 05:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Scrum

I have been working on the rugby union section of the scrum article (see Scrum (rugby)#Rugby union) and am hoping for some feedback. I've only started, but am trying to make it more clear how a scrum is formed and how it works. It's a very difficult thing to explain to someone (imagine if you had to explain is to someone who had never seen one before!). [edit] England national rugby union team

I think this article is very close to GA standard. All that is needed is the lead expanded a little and some references added to a couple of paragraph's in the history. If anyone can help me find those references that would be great. Thanks. - Shudde talk 06:56, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Country templates

There is a simpler way to do the templates than to create a new template for every country. I am in the process of implementing these templates across many different pages. these are the {{ru}}, {{ru-rt}}, {{ruw}}, {{ruw-rt}} and the soon to be created {{ru7}} and {{ru7-rt}}. Simply place the country code like this: {{ru|ENG}} and you get this: Flag of England England.

The {{ru-rt|KAZ}} puts the flag to the right like this: Flag of Kazakhstan Kazakhstan. What do people think? If this can be implemented across the board, I believe it could simplify things and replace up to 300 individual templates, whilst standardising across the board. --Bob 01:46, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Good idea. - Shudde talk 07:00, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Yep, I've already installed this on football articles, obsoleting and deleting about a thousand individual templates in the process. I have been working sport-by-sport, so I'm glad you've already noticed {{ru}} and have started with the replacements. Thanks, Andrwsc 19:40, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] National team articles

I was hoping that we could push to get more national team articles to good article and featured article standard. Especially the tier one countries. At the moment All Blacks and France and FA standard, and England is GA standard, but it would be good, especially at the World Cup is approaching to improve some others. Currently Australia is the Collaboration of the fortnight, but it hasn't been getting worked on much. I've been working on Wales, and have a todo list up on the talk page if anyone wants to help. Anyway it would be great if some contributors could adopt a team. It doesn't matter if there are several people working on the same article. That way we could get some collaboration going to improve these articles.

Anyway I'm going to list some national teams here, if you would like to help with one put your name beneath it. It's not formally organised so once you've decided you are going to help, be bold and start editing!

Shudde talk 01:58, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Use All Blacks and France national rugby union team as the formats the articles should aim for. Thanks. - Shudde talk 01:58, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Rugby

As part of the WikiProject Rugby league we have noticed that our parent WikiProject Rugby is defunct. It only has 4 members of which 2 no longer edit Wikipedia. The original purpose of the Project was to oversee both the union (this) project and the league project (ours). However it is our belief that both projects have enough support to be going on with and it is our wish for the project to be simply refer to both projects like below.

[edit] John Daniell

I am trying to gather material to expand the article on John Daniell, who was captain of Somerset County Cricket Club for 13 seasons between 1908 and 1926, and secretary (and virtual dictator!) of the county club for many years in the first half of the 20th century. He was also a cricket Blue at Cambridge University. I don't have problems finding cricketing information on Daniell, and cricket is likely to be the main thrust of the article, since that sport dominated his life.

But Daniell also played international rugby union for England as hooker seven times between 1898 and 1904, and (I think) won Cambridge Blues for rugby as well as cricket, and it would be good to get some more information (aside from these bald facts) about his rugby career into the article. I don't for example know which teams he played for, or whether his involvement with rugby continued after he returned to England from three years on the family tea plantations in India at the end of 1907. Are there rugby contributors who might know more, or rugby references where I could find some extra material? Johnlp 21:26, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Soviet Team

[edit] Rugby World Cup 2007

Hi rugbymen, I think it important we have an article for everyone who appears in the World Cup, or at least for all the players who have scored. I've added a few for recent scorers anyway. --Montchav 14:17, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Titles

I know it would be a big job, but shouldn't the titles read (for example) "French national rugby union team" instead of 'France'? It reads quite badly as it currently stands. I apologise if this discussion has been had before. Iorek 02:13, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

This naming convention is consistent with football (soccer - see Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/National teams) and with rugby league. I don't really have a preference, but because this seems to be the convention adopted over a number of sports I see no reason for us to do things any differently. - Shudde talk 09:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
Oppose. Although the suggested name makes more sense, we do need to be consiatnt with the rest of Wikipedia.GordyB 13:52, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
Why can't the Rugby Union WikiProject set the the standard? Just because other projects have got it wrong, doesn't mean you have to. Is wiki project Football the "head" project? Or is there a higher one? I'm just trying to find somewhere to suggest the change so that I won't get told "but X project, which we're based on, does it like this, so no change." Or is it a catch 22? Iorek 01:03, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
If we really wanted to I don't see a reason why we could not change it. However I don't think it's necessary, and think it's more trouble then it could possibly be worth. So I'm with GordyB in opposing a change. - Shudde talk 01:12, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

What is the correct way of spelling Mr. Langenhoven's name - Google searches favour Bratley, MSN.com searches favour Bradley, Metacrawler has roughly the same, Yahoo massively favours Bradley, Official RWC site Bratley, scrum.com Bradley, Namibian RU Bradley. [edit] IRB vs. IRFU all-Ireland flags

A different flag seems to be used officially by the IRB; see here: http://www.irb.com/unions/union=11000001/index.html. It looks like the 4prov flag with something in the middle? Maybe the big logo on that page? —MC 01:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

That's a great find. This should be brought to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union for discussion. If we can get an SVG image created from those components, we would have an appropriate replacement. We did the same thing for the field hockey team (Flag of Ireland) once a team flag was found. Andrwsc 03:55, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Seems to be this flag. --StuartBrady (Talk) 11:37, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

"super-mega 22px sign" yeah.. I dont know what you have but my sign doesn't go more than 4px over the normal text. so stop your whining. Chandlertalk 06:10, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
That is the flag they use, however, it contains a non-free logo, so we would not be able to use it as a flag in templates. Bob 08:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Can't a flag without the logo be used? With the shields from the 4prov flag. Or maybe use the 4prov itself? According to Template:IrishFlags, the IFRU does use the 4prov flag. [1]MC 18:58, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
I took the flag used by the IRB from the IRFU website, here it is: [2]Image:IRFU-Flag.jpg. It's the official one, I didn't make it, even the EA Rugby games use it. Ciais 14:31, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
EA Games pay money to the IRFU and other organisations for the rights to use their logos and such like. Wikipedia does not. I don't think we could justify using it without permission.GordyB 15:41, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I believe the standard that has been used for sometime now is Flag of Ireland. There was a discussion some time ago about this. You can view it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union/Archive 1#Flag of Ireland - Shudde talk 22:32, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

This subject was brought up a while back and their was some opinion (if I remember correctly) that the templates at the bottom of the articles be cleaned up - I was the main opposition, but have since come around. I have created a template to use ( {{Navboxrugby}} ) and will be implementing this across the articles slowly - tis a lot of work, please bear with me. Opinions about the standard style and colour scheme is obviously wanted. I have started with the same scheme as in the player/competition infoboxes. --Bob 19:00, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Do you think having Union instead of Federation is a good idea? Nearly all national governing bodies are called blah blah rugby union, rather the federation aren't they (the French are an exception). Apart from that I think they look very good. - Shudde talk 23:10, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. It is kinda 50/50 depending on the language roots (latin tends to federation), I guess I went with instinct in that I speak French... Governing body? --Bob 23:34, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, i woould be ok with governing body or union, either is prob better then Federation. - Shudde talk 23:41, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images/logos

It would be a good idea to verify that the images you have uploaded to use in articles have been tagged correctly, and if a logo of a club, a fair use rational added to the image page (See: Image:LyonOU.jpg for an example. Many are now being deleted without warning to the uploader. Remember, for each instance of use, a fresh rational has to be added to the image page. --Bob 18:59, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

There's a very convenient rationale template, {{logo fur}}. Conscious 05:27, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Minor rugby nations - Africa, Europe

Hello, just making a comment about minor rugby nations, which is an interest of mine, especially in Africa and Europe. Am finding even on the official IRB site, and particularly the CAR website, information is scant, and sometimes contradictory. Results are missed, and the dates and scores of matches often change depending on where you read them. Anyway, at some point I want to write at least something on all national teams that currently have red links on the national teams template, e.g. Burkina Faso. A number of these countries compete in the Castel Beer Cup, sometimes called the CAR Super 16 - usually divided into 4 regional groups of 4 in Africa. Anyone who can shed any light or find sources is obviously a friend of mine. Cheers Stevebritgimp 16:29, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

RugbyData.com - Lots of results of games here.GordyB 16:33, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
Yup, lots of results there, but I think some countries are completely absent, e.g. Iran, Kyrgyzstan, while keeping on top of results is hard for any amateur site, e.g. Rwanda's results only go up to 2005 there. Rugbydata is certainly one site I've used, but you often have to try and check several sites, and see how they agree/disagree, and the one place you'd expect to be definitive, the IRB, doesn't have a 100% listing.Stevebritgimp 19:08, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of All Blacks

An anon keeps adding a template to delete this article. The template is only supposed to be used if a consensus exists over deletion. In this case it clearly does not, so could people please keep an eye on this page. Its ok to removed the template if you don't think the article should be deleted. If this person feels so strongly they should take it to AfD, but I see that as a waste of time. - Shudde talk 23:11, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Maybe that is why I can not find the post I made. I posted somewhere that one of the webmasters at allblacks.com said they would be happy if I used pictures from their site (http://stats.allblacks.com/atoz.asp?group=A) as long as I gave proper recognition to the site (like a link or what ever) anyway, I posted pictures for some of the players like Piri Weepu, and after a few minutes noticed the pictured were not there because I used the "Owner gave me permission...only wikipedia..." option. Anyway, I have been too chicken to write back to them and ask permission to use the photos under the GFDL license, but if anyone here wants to try, I am sure they would let us. Billy Nair 04:21, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Yeah you have to be careful with that. I don't think that them saying it can only be used on wikipedia is good enough for them not to be deleted. Have a look here. I think you should email them and ask them to release the images under GFDL. Then we could use them without any problems. - Shudde talk 05:11, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Use of club logos in Guinness Premiership

Surely the use of club logos in this article does not constitute fair use. They do not enhance the article, as it would be a perfectly good article without them, and I believe they are being used in a purely decorative manner. Anyone care to shed some light on this situation for me? - PeeJay 09:40, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

It could be argued that use of the logo's allows the clubs to be correctly identified. Not really sure though. - Shudde talk 09:50, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
It could also be argued that someone could just click on the club's name if they weren't sure about the identity of the club. Basically what I'm trying to say is that I don't think club logos should be used in any articles other than ones directly related to the club itself. - PeeJay 09:53, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
They shouldn't. The offending logos have been removed. --Bob 15:46, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Club naming standards

I've just had a look at Category:English rugby union teams and the entries in there seem to be in a bit of disarray when it comes to the club's suffix. For example, Gosport and Fareham R.F.C. puts full stops between the initials RFC, whereas Oxford University RFC simply has the initials. Compare this to Category:Welsh rugby union teams, where every single one to which it is appropriate uses RFC (without the full stops), and you'll see what I mean. So what is the general opinion of what the standard should be? "RFC", "R.F.C." or something else? - PeeJay 12:28, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

I think other sports e.g. soccer use dots and therefore I think we should to.GordyB 12:49, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Soccer clubs use dots if they are commonly used in that country. E.g. in Italy we use dots so it's A.C. Milan and not AC Milan, in Spain they don't use'em, so it's FC Barcelona and not F.C. Barcelona. --necronudist 13:03, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
I disagree. Using the full stops causes all sorts of punctuation issues when the club's name is used at the end of a sentence. I believe that the full stops should be left out. - PeeJay 12:58, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
I agree with you. I was refering solely to the title of the articles. I think references in the text should not contain dots.GordyB 13:05, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
But to have the article name use the dots and references in the text not use them, that would require a piped link, which is a waste of time to create. Surely it would just be more simple to remove the dots from the article names? - PeeJay 17:29, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Piped links are easy, no harder than moving an article.GordyB 18:46, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
Maybe so, but my main point was that there doesn't seem to be a standard for using the dots or not. Anyway, I've made my opinion clear, so I'll leave it at that. - PeeJay 19:25, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wayne Barnes

This page is getting some serious attention from what appear to be disgruntled All Blacks fans. Perhaps some further protection is necessary... Hack 05:27, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

It's already been semi-protected, IIRC. Is further protection really necessary? - PeeJay 07:09, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
No, semi-protection is enough. Same with All Blacks. Is enough to stop anon's and new users editing so should stop 95% vandalism. Have a look at wikirage.com — these pages are getting a lot of edits! - Shudde talk 07:44, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
It's been fully protected now because of death threats. It's a shame because there is even more media coverage of him today then yesterday and we cannot expand the article. - Shudde talk 19:38, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
It's now only semi-protected if people wish to edit it. - Shudde talk 02:15, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Player Bio Template

I've made some comments about the infobox template at Template_talk:Infobox_Rugby_biography#Questions_on_using_this_template - it doesn't seem well suited for players who were active before 1980. dramatic 08:05, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I have addressed some of the issues you brought up on the template talk page, but I do believe the infobox could do with a bit of a cleanup, as there really are way too many fields, and some of them are quite confusing. - PeeJay 09:04, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] International Rugby Hall of Fame

What is the International Rugby Hall of Fame? I could be wrong but this just looks like a commercial organisation using wikipedia to promote dinners with celebrities. Also I think it is not notable. As far as I can establish it is basically unkown outside wikipedia and a two year old article in the daily telegraph, which is the only source cited for this organisation. Comments??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.203.135.112 (talk) 14:08, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

It's very notable. It is not a commercial organisation! It's a charity. It is used in many of the national rugby union team articles to establish a list of notable players. For example All Blacks, France national rugby union team, England national rugby union team and Wales national rugby union team list their notable players as those that have been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. - Shudde talk 01:58, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
I think that 1.7 million ghits [3] certainly shows that it is well-known outside of Wikipedia. GringoInChile 02:37, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
ok cool. but i think it needs to be better sourced. eg how do you know it's a charitable organisation? there is no mention of any charitable endeavour on its own website. i'm not sure we can rely on citing other wikipedia articles. or that 1.7m hits establishes notability; I think we need secondary sources - eg newspaper articles. 61.203.135.112 10:27, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Winger disambiguation

I'm unconvinced that most people searching for "Winger" mean the band, and the "what links here" for that page seems to agree with me. The hatnotes are good, but it seems to contravene guideline. Please contribute to the discussion at Talk:Winger. --Dweller 10:47, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copy-edit request for All Blacks versus France at rugby union

I'm posting to please request someone give this article a copy-edit. It has already gone through a peer-review and been promoted to GA. The last thing to be done before I nominate it for Featured Article status is a copy-edit. Basically once that's done I'll be nominating it. Could someone please give this a copy-edit and let me know when done? Cheers. - Shudde talk 03:07, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2008 Super 14 season

I have created the article 2008 Super 14 season if people want to contribute to it. Currently it's just the lead and list of matches, but needs stuff added on the new Experiment Law Variations they might use, and also on squad announcements. - Shudde talk 22:57, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
