[edit] Polynesia discussion from Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals
Description This is a project to create, improve, and maintain articles relating to the nations and territories of American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Niue, the Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna.

- User:gadfium. I'm the maintainer of Portal:Oceania, and have an interest in the area.
- User:Zora. Did graduate research in Tonga and Hawaiian archives. Speak Tongan and some Hawaiian. Unfortunately, I'm grotesquely over-committed to several other projects (Indian cinema, Islam, clothing).

Comments It is I believe understood that this project would focus its efforts primarily on those countries which are not already included within the scope of other WikiProjects.
- Given the existence of the Portal:Oceania, would people like to see the proposed Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia projects merge into one proposed Oceania Project, to develop a similar scope? Badbilltucker 21:16, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New Zealand?
I see the Wikiproject banner has been added to Talk:New Zealand. While New Zealand is undoubtedly part of Polynesia, I think it is stretching the resources of this project too far to try to take New Zealand on board. We should adopt specific articles which are more relevant to Polynesia, such as Pasifika (should it ever get written), but the country overall is too ambitious.-gadfium 08:17, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- I agree a lot of NZ-related articles would be better left to the NZ WikiProject, probably including the New Zealand article. Many articles in Category:Māori might be relevant, although again the NZ project seems to be making reasonable progress on those. Just looking around, I get the impression that Polynesian aspects (besides Māori) of New Zealand culture are a bit neglected. The lack of a Pasifika article is one example, or look at Category:Ethnic groups in New Zealand. -- Avenue 11:48, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- Personally, as the person who added the tag, I tried to include all the articles which are mentioned on the Polynesia page, including Hawaii as well. However, in cases like these, I think we would limit ourselves only to those main articles, and let the other projects which deal with the subjects more specifically handle all the other pages relating to the subject. Basically thinking we might be slightly able to help with maps, maybe some history, and a few other things relating to the main subject, but limiting ourselves only to those main articles. Of course, if others disagree, they are free to remove the tags. John Carter 14:33, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User sm, User smo
Are there no templates like Template:User sm, Template:User smo, Template:User smo-3? ... It's not for me ;-) --Roland2 07:58, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have looked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_by_language . It would not appear that there are. :( Chris 02:43, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Rename and expansion
- Description
- I propose to expand the now-inactive Wikipedia:WikiProject American Samoa into Wikipedia:WikiProject Samoa to be more inclusive of both Samoas and all Samoan-topics. Including the independent nation, with three times the population, would improve (and perhaps save) the existing Project. Not to mention the large Samoan diaspora, Los Angeles being the largest Samoan city, as well as notables who have come from the culture, like The Rock, Sosene Anesi...

You could request that the project change its scope, and, if whatever response you got was affirmative and sufficient, change the existing project page, templates, blah blah blah. At that point, you could start tagging the articles of the new broader scope and try to get members that way. Listing it on the Community Portal would probably work too. But you really should get the approval of the project itself before making such changes. Of course, if others were to join the project and agree to the changes, no one could argue that. [edit] alternate mergefrom WikiProject American Samoa
As WikiProject American Samoa seems to have been inactive since the turn of the year, I propose making it a taskforce of this project, Wikipedia:WikiProject Polynesia/Samoan Islands task force. That will ensure it won't get deleted (the WP:Council has been cleaning out inactive projects in recent months) and it will standardize that project with our existing MoS and membership base. [edit] Tokelau

[edit] Review request
Could somebody please review O le Ao o le Malo? Myself and several other editors are working to get this article to an FA and we would like to know how we are doing so far and what else is needed. --Sharkface217 22:13, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed merger with WikiProject American Samoa
Given the inactivity of the above named project, I propose it be merged in as a work group of this project. The project banner is already adjusted to accomodate the merger.
- Support John Carter (talk) 19:15, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Support - I only came to the American Samoa wikiproject to notify any interest about the upcoming creation of the American Samoa towns/villages/islands and it seems that since it's inactive, I will just make the suggestion here on this centralized wikiproject. Would there need to be a merger with the regular Samoa wikiproject (+ any other wikiprojects that bud of from wp:Polynesia) or is the American Samoa wikiproject particularly inactive? Calaka (talk) 11:41, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] French Polynesian politics
Can anyone here sort out the pages on the politics and politicians of French Polynesia? Numerous changes of President have left most of these articles seriously outdated, and while I have made efforts to at least note who is the current President, they could do with a good cleanup. I'm confused whether there's a difference between President of French Polynesia and President of the French Polynesian assembly. If there's no difference, then we need to add Edouard Fritch to President of French Polynesia for two days in February.
The articles I think need a cleanup include:
- Gaston Flosse
- Gaston Tong Sang
- Oscar Temaru (I removed a large amount of material in French - someone more fluent in the language than I could possibly evaluate it)
- Politics of French Polynesia
and maybe:
Is there a better place than this to ask for such help?-gadfium 21:09, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
