New Banner

I created a new banner to put up on talk pages of Peruvian-related articles, in particular major cities, regions, Presidents, politicians/political figures, political parties, political pressure groups, governmental institutions, and key historical figures. Please help the project by adding the following banner to the talk pages of the articles found in these templates and categories:

I'm Going to Start a New Article

Hey iu guys I've just obtained an enciclopedy from Perú on wich i see very good articles. The article I'll create is "Peruvian Society".--Walter Humala |Talk?17:23, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Don't plagerize. --Descendall 20:20, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Sure I won't.

Everyone might want to keep an eye on this; this guy has uploaded stuff that looks like copyvios to me in the past, he fradulently claimed to be an administrator, and he got angry at me and called me an "idiot" when I pointed out that he was lying. In short, he has 0 credibility, and I'm willing to bet good money that he plans on uploading copyrighted material. --Descendall 19:40, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

We already have an article that covers that topic Culture of Peru. Please redirect that page to the Culture of Peru article and place your contributions there. Remember to cite sources, be NPOV, and always double check for spelling and grammar. Also, please be careful in uploading copyrighted material. If you need some help in finding out what you can upload see Wikipedia:Uploading images and Wikipedia:Fair use. You might also want to avoid using ALL CAPS when making titles. Thank you.--Jersey Devil 01:10, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I really think this Descendall guy has no sense of humor on me. We ought to chat someday.--Walter Humala |Talk? 05:03, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

New Template

Hey guys, I suggest to create an image license template, related to peru gov's pictures which can be found on peruvian official websites. I think that would help us on enlarge peru's gallery.--WalterHumala |wanna Talk? 03:10, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Uh, what is it? The only template that I can see from your edits is User:Walter Humala/template:nazi. --Descendall 03:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
I missread what you wrote, I thought that you wrote that you had created one. --Descendall 03:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Hold on, first I want to know if its ok to gather images from ".gob.pe" webs (government sites).--WalterHumala |wanna Talk? 02:19, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 16:11, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

User Template and User Category

I would just like to bring to everyone's attention that a category and template have been made for project members. Feel free to add them to your user page to indicate membership to this project.

On a side note, I know I haven't been very active recently, so recruiting and activity for the project has gone down lately. The reason I haven't been very active is because of university which is keeping me bogged down with work. Anyway, winter break is coming soon and I'll see if I can get this place back and running like before during that period. I've been considering big changes to the project page itself, creating much more pages instead of just one main page, aswell as doing these "assessments" that many other projects have started doing. Anyway, I hope we can keep this place more active.--Jersey Devil 04:35, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah right, you've just been watching RU football. --Descendall 06:06, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Army, Navy, and Air Force of Peru

The following discussion about the proper naming for this articles (Peruvian Navy vs Navy of Peru and so on) took place on my talk page, I'm bringing it here so as to get a broader agreement on this matter. --Victor12 23:42, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there any reason why we shouldn't just use the common translation of these three branches? The articles make it clear that they're called Ejército del Perú, Marina de Guerra del Perú, and Fuerza Aérea del Perú, not Ejército Puerano, Marina de Guerra Peruana, and Fuerza Aérea Peruana. --Descendall 00:07, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. It should be Something "of Peru", because that's exactly what the Spanish translates to. —Mets501 (talk) 03:40, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
The point is that translations don't have to be literal to be correct, actually more often than not literal translations tend to convey wrong meanings or cause confusion among readers who don't speak the original language (Spanish in this case). Furthermore if you want a really exact translations you should have Navy of War of Peru which is clearly confusing (pun unintended). It also goes against Wikipedia conventions as you can see by checking the Army / Air Force / Navy by countries categories. --Victor12 16:45, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I understand that we shouldn't always use literal translations. Instead, we should use the translation most commonly used. Obviously, the translation most commonly used for "Marina de Guerra" is "Navy" and not "Maratine War" or whatever the absolute literal translation would be. It would seem to me, however, that the most common translation of Ejército del Perú would be Army of Peru, would it not? I don't think the argument about conventions is all that compelling. Different armys use different names, and that should be reflected in the article names. If the Ecuadorian Army calls themselves the Ejército Ecuatoriano (they do), fine. If the Navy of Egypt calls themselves that, and they apparantly do, that's okay too. --Descendall 21:39, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
That's the point, the most commonly used translation for Ejército del Perú in English is, by far, Peruvian army. Try for instance a Google search of "Peruvian Army" vs "Army of Peru" (use "" so as to search for the whole expression). The same applies to the other services. --Victor12 22:11, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I'll say that personally I think it should be "Army of Peru, Navy of Peru...." and so on. To go along with how most other Wikiarticles on armed forces are structured and because that is the direct translation of the names.--Jersey Devil 00:55, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
I personally think that standardization across Wikipedia is the most important issue. According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (country-specific topics), "X of Peru" would be the way to go; however, it looks like using "Peruvian X" would agree with common practice, as in Category:Armies, Category:Navies by country and Category:Air forces. So I don't know, I find both options equally acceptable, I just wish there would be more consistency in Wikipedia as a whole. --Gabbec 03:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
I also think it's important to go for standarization across Wikipedia and from that point of view it seems to me that "Peruvian X" is the way to go. That's how all the other wikiarticles on Armed Forces are structured and doing otherwise would just break the standard, don't you think? --Victor12 16:00, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
I just don't think that standardization is so important that we have to actually change the name of something in order to "fit." I can understand why we'd want standardization in something like categories for "Cities of X" or "X-ian cities." I don't like the idea of taking the standardization of names as far as Victor12, though. It also may be true that a colloquial name gets more google hits, but that's because most people writing on the internet are writing colloquially. For example, "CIA" gets way more hits than "Central Intelligence Agency," and most people call the agency "CIA" most of the time, but we still have the article at Central Intelligence Agency because we use the official name for government agencies. Like I said earlier, however, this isn't something I really care a whole lot about. --Descendall 04:49, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
That's right Descendall, CIA is not used because the official name is Central Intelligence Agency, however Ejército Peruano, Marina de Guerra del Perú and Fuerza Aérea del Perú don't actually have any official names in English, their official names are in Spanish. Navy of Peru as well as Peruvian Navy are both translations, not the official name of any institution. As such, I think the most common translation should be the one used, which is "Peruvian Navy" and so on for the other branches. That has been the regular practice at wikipedia for all armed forces, for instance there is a "French Army" article even though the official name is Armée de Terre. The same rule has been applied for all other countries with similar translation issues, so I think we should use this standard. --Victor12 21:20, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Notability of Dan James Pantone and MATSES

The MATSES article is about a Peruvian organization. The Dan James Pantone article is about an American naturalist working in Peru with MATSES. Can someone familiar with Peru look at these articles and perhaps leave an assessment on these articles' talk pages as to their notability? Thanks, --A. B. 03:48, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Descendall has started an AfD for the MATSES article. A key issue is verification of the organization's notability using reliable sources. You're invited to comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/MATSES. Thanks, --A. B. (talk) 14:50, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:23, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Is region the same as department?

Yeah, is it? we have articles like apurimac region, on which according to my dad depicts the apurimac department. He also said region was an old concept, but also said not to be sure. So please help with this. -- Walter Humala - Emperor of West Wikipediawanna Talk? 05:25, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Confirmed!, click on the other language version (spanish), and youl see "Departamento" instead of "Regi´on" -- Walter Humala - Emperor of West Wikipediawanna Talk? 05:27, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Actually, as I understand it, while the region was an old concept that was once abandoned, it has been revived in the past few years, and now there are elections for regional presidents (the last ones this past November). Most regions are departments, with the exceptions of Lima (Lima Region doesn't include Lima Province, but Lima Department does) and Callao (which under the departmental division is a Constitutional Province, but it is a region like any other in the regional division). I think that regions effectively replace departments for all political purposes (except for Electoral Districts for Congressional elections, which are basically the same as the departments, plus Callao). --Gabbec 07:54, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Rest assured that the Peruvian bureaucracy is alive and well and that Regional Governments (Gobiernos Regionales) still exist as they always have. I never heard of the "Departamentos" or their governmental bodies ever have been "abandoned." I can't imagine any part of the Peruvian Government eliminating itself.
With respect to provinces, You are right in saying that Lima is not considered a province. People living in Lima who are from outside of Lima commonly say, "Somos de provincia," meaning that they are not Limeños.
It would be good for us to explain what is happening in Peru with respect to their governments and how they function (or do not function). We could do this in a historical context. Any suggestions? --Peruanita 14:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey girl you're from peru, right? then you could effort a little bit more on gathering that info. thanks --Walter Humala - Emperor of West Wikipedia 01:38, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Peru articles

Only a tiny percentage of Peru-related articles have the Template:PeruProjectBanner tag on them, and there are still hundreds of unassested Peru articles. Should we start to tag every Peru-related article, and then start making assesments? Also, is a new template needed? --Descendall 13:38, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I actually just foind a pretty major error. For whatever reason, stub-class Peru articles are put into Category:Unassessed Peru articles instead of Category:Stub-class Peru articles. I don't know how to fix that. --Descendall 17:02, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Article on internal war

Does anyone think that there should be an article on the war from 1980 to more or less 2000? Right now most of the information about the war is in Shining Path, Alberto Fujimori, etc. Perhaps it really deserves its own article. --Descendall 01:03, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

The conflict itself is important enough to have its own article, so long as it could be adequately put together. It will undoubtedly become part of the ensuing edit war with those two unnamed users however.--Jersey Devil 01:17, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I also think that the conflict does deserve an article. However, it is so controversial that I know if I came out of my retirement (or semi-retirement) to make it, I'd be driven right back out. In both the edit wars and the actual war, both sides have behaved terribly. --Descendall 01:28, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Think it's a good idea to create more peru-related articles, but in this case, what title would it have? -- Walter Humala Godsave him! (wanna Talk?) 02:58, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't know. I imagine that someone would want to call it "Peru's War against Terrorism" and someone else would want to call it "The People's War in Peru," leading to some huge fight about NPOV. Any suggestions? --Descendall 03:27, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
I see the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls it "El conflicto armado interno." --Descendall 03:42, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Good idea, if a gov commission has called it like that, then we ought to use the "official name". But I can't figure a way to translate that. (Inner Conflict maybe)-- Walter Humala Godsave him! (wanna Talk?) 03:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
"Internal Armed Conflict." Maybe I will work on this. I've actually started to jot down some of my ideas at User:Descendall/Peruconflict. Don't know if anything will ever come of it. --Descendall 04:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I would like you to introduce a little comment about Downhill mountain bike in the part of sports. In cusco a world championship cup is race every year, this championship is called the "megaavalanche" and there is other one that is the "empire rider", both with the presence of the world champions, latin american and peruvian champions also. I think this can attrack more tourists. Thank you. fabrigarmendia@hotmail.com, if you want information, pictures, etc you only write down me a email. bye

Hi. I just signed in to wiki and to this project, so ignore me if i'm saying something that's already been said. I was looking at the Peru page on wiki and realized that instead of writing new articles, we should be improving the ones in the page. We should clean up the sections and add more information. It has also come to my attention that there is an excess of pictures, most of them unimportant. There is also a lot links to unexistent articles, that wind up with an almost red paragraphs. Also, in the Peru portal, some of the news are in spanish. The articles seem as if someone tried to crunch all the information in as little space as possible. The most important example of this is the history section. I live in Peru and have consequently studied its history in school, it takes more than a couple of paragraphs to explain all the ancient history. Please answer soon. Thanks User:Teresa.Fr 18:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Good to hear that, I'm starting with the translation of history of Lima (section) on the spanish wikipedia. I'm using User:Walter_Humala/History of Lima as a draft, and then will add it to History of Lima , and its section on the Lima article. -- Walter Humala Godsave him! (wanna Talk?) 05:19, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Tagging of categories

For what it's worth, the following red links need to be tagged with {{PeruProjectBanner|class=category|importance=}}. This will add those categories to Category:Category-class Peru articles. Once that is done, I think that just about every category that this project will cover will have been tagged. It's a lot, so I don't feel like doing it on my own.

--Descendall 08:05, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I'll do it then. --– Emperor Walter Humala · ( shout! · sign? ) 20:29, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

The categories are all the subcategories of Category:Peru that don't have the PeruProjectBanner template on them (and I used Excel to help me find them). As for "blank categories," I don't know what you mean. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Descendall (talkcontribs) 18:27, 8 March 2007 (UTC).
By the way, every one of them has to be redone because your cat = yes paramater doesn't work. It doesn't place articles into Category:Category-class Peru articles. --Descendall 18:31, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Ericbronder 23:01, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

As a result of the addition of the PeruProjectBanner template (with class=cat) to the category talk pages all category pages now show an additional entry like:

  • t
  • Category talk:Regions of Peru

I'm not sure if this is an intended feature or an unwanted side effect. could someone elaborate on this? Eric Bronder

No way, I was just about to edit the banner template, its hard but can be done. Most wikiprojects have the cat parameter on their banner, this is better than typing "cat" on the class param. Cats need assesment, also disambiguation pages, and even lists can be featured (there's list=yes param, along with cat=yes and dab=yes) --– Emperor Walter Humala · ( shout! · sign? ) 00:55, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Generic Template for Navigation Bars?

Hi everyone, I've created a new template Navigation Peru which i think can be used as a navigation bar in more articles within the project. It's derived from two well-know navigation bars: Navigation with image and Dynamic navigation box with image. Main differences are the default peruvian flag left of the title bar and the possibility to position images on title bar AND in body text (left|right|top|bottom} positioned. Two examples follow for:

  • Presidents of Peru
  • Provinces in Piura Region

Template:Navigation Peru And Template:Navigation Peru

Any ideas on using this template or not? Obsolete? Fit for purpose? Robust enough? etc. etc.

As far as I can tell, it just makes things more complicated. --69.142.111.235 06:29, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Fixed, merged in Category:Peru related categories, cats are not articles. --Emperor Walter Humala · ( talk? · help! ) 19:13, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Bolívar's War,South American wars of independence

Hello,i wanted to talk about the articles about this subjects,i looked at them recently and saw that besides being terribly small for the importance and relevance FOR DIFERENT COUNTRIES they want to merged them all in one article and do a masacote whit it.So please i urge you to vote for the expansion of this articles rather than their merging. What logic does it have that a war of just one country, the USA,has several articles dealing whit it,some even reaching the 50 kylobites, while the wars of independence of South America that features different countries, ideologies, people is composed mainly of stubs and unreferenced articles. And now they want to merged them!please see whit your own eyes help expand them.and vote no:)

South American wars of independence

Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 19:00, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Guinea pig

Hi, this article just passed GA status and I was wondering if anyone from this WikiProject might want to take a look at the article in the interest of comprehensiveness. Thanks! Chubbles 20:21, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Possible vandalism of Tambopata Province

The page for Tambopata Province that has been edited by 167.104.6.43 (who has been accused of repeated vandalism), and Jelld (who has only contributed information related to this problem). "They" included information about a Masetelli tribe, which does not come up in web searches. Can someone with knowledge of Peruvian indigenous tribes please verify if this tribe actually exists? Thanks in advance. 132.192.14.232 02:34, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Jelld also created a page on Yurubarya, the language of the Masatelli, which of course can't be verified either. Both users (probably the same vandal) included other information about the economy of Tambopata being based on cocoa (cacao) beans ("well over 67%") and copper, but that doesn't seem to fit the info for the Madre de Dios Region. Apparently it is all fabricated, so I reverted the Tambopata Province entry to a previous version. 132.192.14.232 01:32, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Coup d'état

Hi, as part of my coup d etat on this Wikiproject, I created Template:WPPERU navigation, for making easy to you guys locate all subpages, I've also moved some content from the main page to subpages. We really need to improve this so it's a good way to start. --Andersmusician $ 06:34, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Party names in English or Spanish?

I just noticed that someone had move the APRA page. Previously it was under the English spelling American Popular Revolutionary Alliance but now it has been moved to Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana. This opens up the question of whether we should have the names of the political parties of Peru in English or in Spanish. Feel free to discuss below.--Jersey Devil 07:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Doing a quick browse through some other countries' parties i'd say move it back to the english spelling. I did some checks for parties in non-spanish countries (The Netherlands, Germany and Austria) they all use english spelling. Checks for spanish speaking countries like Bolivia and Spain itself also use english spelling. Consensus seems to be english spelling. Eric Bronder 18:50, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
We are supposed to use whatever the party is most frequently called in English. Some parties have names that English speakers almost never translate. Sinn Féin comes to mind. In the unlikely event that Peru has a party like that, than keep it in Spanish. Otherwise make it English. --200.62.165.65 22:07, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Logo for the WikiProject Peru?

I took the liberty and created a logo for the wikiproject Peru, noticing that other projects uses logos as well. Any ideas on using this logo or not? Fit for purpose? Maybe use it in the project banner and/or the project page? Eric Bronder 18:44, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Looks very nice to me! --Jbmurray 22:29, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

thoght this: was the logo already --Andersmusician $ 04:51, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Restyling apropriate?

Take a look at the change i made to the first two headings (project and participants) on the project page. The colours are taken from the new project navigation {{WPPERU navigation}}. Will this be acceptable? Will this be an acceptable style for the project pages. If not, it's just one edit to revert. Eric Bronder 22:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

It looks good as does the new logo. However, the shortcut template seems odd in its new location, maybe it could be aligned to the left. Anyway, great job!!! It seems wikiproject Peru is coming back to life. You might want to check out the recent modifications to Portal:Peru and the discussions in the talk page about a possible revamping. Greetings, --Victor12 01:04, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Victor. Anyway, I've been thinking that with this increased activity perhaps a new collaboration is in order.--Jersey Devil 01:18, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I was waiting for you to say that... LOL... --Victor12 01:28, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
BTW, my proposal for the next collaboration: getting Portal:Peru up to featured status. That shouldn't take long with a few hands. --Victor12 01:32, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
hehe it is funny to think that became motivated to do that just because of the banner I created. --Andersmusician $ 04:04, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Anders, you might want to check this out Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Congressional Project.--Jersey Devil 04:07, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Peruvian arts

there's an ongoing merge proposal at Peruvian arts, I'm not sure if it would be good, please send your opinions thanks --Andersmusician $ 18:53, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

hmmm no?, what about including peruvian terrorists attacks at List of terrorist incidents? --Andersmusician $ 04:39, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
