[edit] Discussion and suggestions for specific articles

I've been on Wikibreak for past month or so and I'm attempting reinvigoration of my Wikipedia contributions; particularly I would like to get this project which now has a few participants off the ground. Yesterday I added some general updates to the main page in regards to goals of the project which obviously you may alter as you please. The specific goals I added were limited despite my feeling that more may be added which also required remediation and watchlisting by all participants. I would like to reccommend the following articles been watchlisted and in some cases cleaned up and/or expanded upon:

  • Ibrahim Babangida; this article is labelled as POV and complaints have been registered on a number of occassions.
  • Atiku Abubakar; this article is simply a mess, particularly as a result of recent events surrounding the Vice President's apparent defection.
  • The articles on the three most populous ethnic groups are subject to fairly constant misinformation; Hausa people (or Hausa-Fulani), Igbo people, and Yoruba people are all in need of attention.

[edit] Article for deletion: Gnaa, Nigeria

FYI, the article Gnaa, Nigeria has just entered its 3rd AfD. There's been considerable debate in the past as to:

  1. Does such a place even exist?
  2. If a place does exist with that name, is it notable?
  3. Is this all a hoax perpetrated by the other GNAA, the Gay Niggers Association of America; they issue press releases datelined Gnaa, Nigeria.

[edit] Ibrahim Babangida

Hi, this biography needs massive work to clean up its lack of references and restored to a neutral point of view. Currently, it's a mess since a couple of anonymous IPs have edit-warred over it. --  Netsnipe  (Talk)  14:30, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 15:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sultan

Given the events of the last few days, we need to work on documenting the office of the Sultan of Sokoto and personalities related to it. I am not in Nigeria and don't have access to documents, but I am available if anyone can take the lead. Please drop me an email from my User page.

[edit] List of cities in Nigeria

The page entitled "List of cities in Nigeria" has a link to the city of Shaki. However, clicking on this link takes you to Shaki, Azerbaijan not Shaki, Nigeria!

[edit] Userbox

I noted that this project doesn't have a userbox yet. I wonder whether any of you would find this one acceptable: {{User WikiProject Nigeria}}. Oh, and I also added the flag to the project banner and made a few minor wording changes. I hope no one minds; they can always be reverted later. Badbilltucker 16:30, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing articles for places in Nigeria with populations > 100,000

The Wikipedia:Missing articles for towns and cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants project has identified a list of places in Nigeria which appear to have current populations of more than 100,000 and do not have articles in the English-language Wikipedia.

They are:

(Caveat: since this list was compiled by computer without any local knowledge of Nigeria, some of these names may be wrong, or alternative names for places with articles which already exist.)

Would anyone be interested in creating articles for these places? -- The Anome 11:30, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

I'll give them a shot. Picaroon 19:19, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Sango Otta is another name for Otta, which is another name for Ota, which has an entry. I'll add a redirect. Rjhatl 17:04, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Alright, I've now created four geo-stubs and Rjhatl has created the redirect, so I think we're done. Picaroon 02:43, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Nigeria

I've given the revitalization of Portal:Nigeria a go, but Toussaint, the creator, and I won't be able to maintain it alone. Help is appreciated. Picaroon 23:36, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please look at Lawrence Anini

He's worth an article, but the one that's there isn't good enough. You folks know (and care) more than I do about such things. YechielMan 07:41, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New WikiProject template

User:Toussaint/WPNigeria - Based on Wikipedia:WikiProject Indonesia's Template:WPIndonesia Navigation. May be useful for future reference; if you want to use it, just mke sure to put it under its own page (preferably Template:WPNigeria Navigation or something like that. --Toussaint 14:41, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't think our project is big enough to need one yet, but thanks for making it in case we ever do need it. Picaroon 00:14, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bilateral relations discussion

I would like to invite you all to participate in a discussion at this thread regarding bilateral relations between two countries. All articles related to foreign relations between countries are now under the scope of WikiProject Foreign relations, a newly created project. We hope that the discussion will result in a more clean and organized way of explaining such relationships. Thank you. Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:03, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Universities and colleges in Nigeria

The recent splitting of this category into a whole set of categories on a State basis, such as Category:Universities and colleges in Kano State is a bad idea as they are mostly occupied by only a single university. I suggest the change be reverted. What do others think? --Bduke 00:21, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Attention of project members requested on Talk:Igbo people

Could all the members please contribute to Talk:Igbo people#419 section, as there has been a dispute there about a section of the article. Thanks, Picaroon (Talk) 20:50, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Geology and archaelogy

Hello, not sure if I am doing this right, but one of the things I would like to see is detailed GEOLOGY & ARCHAEOLOGY of Nigeria. For example, BOMPAI ROCK in Kano, we used to play on as children. It is a huge granite(?) monolith(?) out of nowhere. When I was a child, we were told that it was ejecta from a megavolcano where the Jos Plateau is now. I have never been able to find any scientific work on this. We have amazing features like this in Nigera. Another one is the man-made mud (?) hill near the old city which it was said was built by a king to hunt elephants (so he could be above them). I have no idea if this has ever been excavated. In the south we have the tombs that contained the igbo-ukwu bronzes and so on. I have collated some documents on that (old now) and wonder if there is anyone out there that has more information? --Dr T Hunt 10:28, 12 July 2007 from UK

Hi there. You should feel free to start an article on the subject if you think we need one. Google turns up exactly two results for "Bompai Rock," so I agree that your best bet is offline documents. Picaroon (Talk) 16:39, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Needs merging

Anyone know, of Ado-Odo/Ota and Ado-Odo/Otta, which is the correct name? If so, they should be merged to the correct name. Thanx, 68.39.174.238 16:44, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Will look into it, thanks for bringing it up. Picaroon (Talk) 19:49, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
According to the Ogun State website, one "t" is correct. Will merge to it. Picaroon (Talk) 19:57, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User:Picaroon/Electoral Reform Panel

I was going to create an article on the Electoral Reform Panel, a committee created by Yar'Adua to look into electoral reform. But, I can't find out who the 22nd member is. 21 were originally appointed, with the 22nd to be added shortly, according to Thisday. But I can find no references in later news reports to who this 22nd member is. Help appreciated. Picaroon (t) 00:26, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] CfD nomination of Category:Kings of Nigeria

Category:Kings of Nigeria has been nominated for deletion, merging, or renaming. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the category's entry on the Categories for discussion page. Thank you. – Cgingold (talk) 00:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Opinion Request: Advance Fee Fraud Entry on Nigeria pages

Hi all, I have been debating with another editor on the following issues:

  1. Do crime references belong on a city/country page?
  2. Is Advance fee fraud significant enough to mention on the Nigeria page?
  3. Is Advance fee fraud significant enough of an economic issue to discuss it under the Economy section?

We are unable to reach a compromise on these issues and I would appreciate your opinions on how to best resolve this matter. Ajisekanla (talk) 08:22, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Question about Victoria Island

Does anyone know if Victoria Island is currently actually an island? I've been asked on my talk page, and while one of the maps I've found shows a separation between it and Eti Osa, other do not. User talk:Picaroon#Victoria Island (Nigeria) is the location of the question (it will be User talk:Picaroon/Archive 6#Victoria Island (Nigeria) when archived). Thanks. Picaroon (t) 20:20, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Victoria Island is/was an Island. It was orignally separated from the Lekki Peninsula by swamps which were filled in by the colonial government. This activity continued under successive state governments, so that there is a significant land bridge between Victoria Island and Lekki Peninsula. This area was referred to as Victoria Island Annex and Maroko. Much of the Maroko area is now referred to as "Oniru Estate" after the Oniru ruling family. Ajisekanla (talk) 09:39, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. Picaroon (t) 21:39, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] please help with orthography

Please help with Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa etc. orthography, including tone marks. If that is correct, people can properly pronounce Nigerian names, but most of us do not have the references to figure this out on our own. For example, Olusegun Obasanjo is Oluṣẹgun Ọbasanjọ is most English sources, but Olusẹgun Ọbasanjọ with an s in Yoruba wikipedia. Neither indicate tone, so for the IPA I had to go to the BBC pronunciation guide, which is not reliable. kwami (talk) 05:36, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Area boys - the film

There is a short page on Area boys already, but does anyone know anything about the feature film of the same name? I heard about it briefly, but I can't track down more details. Centrepull (talk) 18:22, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Here's a blog about it. Entering "Area Boys" film -wiki into Google will get you more results. Picaroon (t) 21:38, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tantalizers

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Tantalizers, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Tantalizers. [edit] Category for Traditional Rulers and Chiefs

I've been working on some articles about Yoruba chieftaincies, such as Ota Traditional Chiefs, that talks about the various major chiefs of Ota, Nigeria and how they're selected. The question is - how should this be classified? I see there's a category for Nigerian Royalty, but it seems to me that this might only include kingdom-wide rulers such as the Alaafin of Oyo. Any suggestions? Rjhatl (talk) 20:10, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

  • For now, I've classified them as Nigerian Royalty, since that seems to be what others have done. Rjhatl (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Repeated vandalism from user Ifyakinsola

I've seen this user making many edits, primarily to things having to do with Nigeria, to promote "Yorubeat" music and their favorite artist. I'm not into wiki politics, but I think it would be appropriate for someone to take a look at their edits and consider whatever sort of action needs to be taken to stop this from going on. Rjhatl (talk) 20:28, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion or alternatives for unverifiable biased article?

2005 killings of Christians in Nigeria is very biased. In attempting to rewrite the article to be less biased, I was unable to find any articles from mainstream news sources (BBC, AllAfrica) that mention any fighting at all in Adamawa in 2005. The article includes two external links to Christian sites that tell the story in a very biased fashion. Google only turns up stories about the fighting on other Christian sites, and the all seem to cite one report (the one at the persecution.org link). I'm beginning to question whether this event really happened or not, and even if it did, the lack of any coverage at all in non-Christian media prevents the article from being written in a non-biased fashion. Note- I did find references to riots in 2004 and 2003 where Christians rioted and burned down three mosques. But *nothing* in 2005. I think this article may be a candidate for deletion, but I'm open to suggestions as to other ways to improve it. Rjhatl (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sadguru Maharaj ji

There was a prominent individual in the U.S. and U.K. during the 1970s who went by the name Guru Maharaj Ji, who headed an organization called the Divine Light Mission, and who claimed to be the Perfect Master.

By some coincidence, there is also an individual who was born in Ghana and is active in Nigeria who calls himself Guru Maharaj ji (or Satguru Maharaji, etc.), who claims to be the Perfect Master and, and whose organization is called either the Divine Light mission or One Love Family, which also has followers in the U.K. The Nigerian guru and his movement are mentioned in these news stories and webpages: [1][2][3][4][5]

It would help disambiguate the two individuals if we had an article on the Nigerian guru. Is anyone in this project familiar with him or have access to additional sources? Is he or his organization worth an article? ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:24, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

The Nigerian man calls himself "Sadguru Maharaj Ji" and his group called "One Love Family". See [6], and [7] [8]. Not sure he is notable enough for a Wikipedia article. ≈ jossi ≈ (talk) 21:30, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal to consolidate African country WikiProject banners

Template:AfricaProject was recently modified, and now contains individual parameters for all countries in Africa (see usage notes). Since project-specific assessment for all African countries can now be accomplished through the template, a proposal has been made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Africa to consolidate all individual African country WikiProject banners.

Comments or suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you, Black Falcon (Talk) 23:28, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] State v City people categories

Please take a look at the discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 April 22 #Category:People from Kano, Lagos. It will have a bearing on other states. --Bduke (talk) 01:23, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ibeji / Yoruba Twins

I a few years ago suggested these two pages be merged, and just today so indicated again on the respective talk pages. Any support from this Project for such a merge? --Dumarest (talk) 11:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
