I would like to suggest that a category be added to the N series for novelty music. Some samples of this genre include "Monster Mash" by the late Bobby "Boris" Pickett, "Purple People Eater" by the late Sheb Wooley and "Shaving Cream" by the late Benny Bell. [edit] Fusion genres

Metalcore has been done using crimson (rock). This is being used on the subgenre articles with the template:heavymetal template:hardcorepunkbox boxes on the main metalcore article. My feeling is some mid-colour would work well but rock and heavy metal colours are quite close - could rock be made say scarlet, thenn fusion could be crimson. Any ideas of best practice? Using two boxes seems apt in this instance but not ideal. Other multiple genre situation arises with Christian rock, etc. Paul foord 15:53, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

For subgenres, they normally should follow the same color as the main genres. Originally, heavy metal also used crimson as a color. However, Tuf-Kat decided to assign heavy metal its own color. She assigned it cyan. However, SnOwFlake thought that cyan doesn't reflect the genre's feeling well, so he and I agreed on the current color. Andros 1337 18:38, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

There are loads of genres that aren't tied into this project. Grime is an obvious example. I'm tempted to go and tag every music genre article I find with the genre tag. We have 157 varieties of dance music at least ;) Secretlondon 20:59, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-Class and good B-Class articles, with no POV or copyright problems. as i'm sure many of you will have noticed, many music genre articles' external links sections are getting bloated with links to external sites. wikipedia already has some guidelines regarding external links (see Wikipedia:External links, WP:NOT#Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files, Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming and Wikipedia:Spam Event Horizon) but i feel we really need to create a common policy for music genre articles, i.e., what notability or relevancy creteria should an external link meet for it to be worthy of inclusion on a genre article? i see no problem to articles about the history or musicology of genres, and obviously links to regarding specific artists should be on that respective artists own page, but what about stuff like internet radio stations and links to sites that host dj mixes? re the former, i'm of the opinion that a link to a relevant search on shoutcast is probably a good idea to include (if said search gives a fair few results), but what about individual stations? a good example of bloat would be the links on the trance article. thoughts? --MilkMiruku 14:54, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

I've noticed that if you try to navigate the categories (browse, I guess) from the main page, it is impossible to arrive at the European "classical" music genres (eg Baroque music, Medieval music, Renaissance music, Classical music era). This seems like a big problem to me. Is there a way this can be fixed? Can someone direct me to any instructions on how to work with the category trees? Thanks, Makemi 21:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Er, under the music genres did you find Baroque music, as opposed to Baroque metal? I found the broad sub-category "Classical music" assuming that at least this would then lead to the other genres within European classical music. But instead you have to go to "Musical eras", which you might think would be right, but no once again you have to go to "Early music", and then you finally arrive at the genres of which I speak (took me a while to figure it out). I too would think that they would be directly under the category "music genres", but you have to go pretty roundabout to get there. I think Baroque music is a bit more important, and should perhaps be easier to find than "Acid Brass".

I guess my big problem is that if I want to find an important musical genre, and I'm not thinking of it as "History" or "Art" rather than music (I would never ever think to look under art history for Baroque music), it's ridiculously hard to find by browsing. And I'd like to be able to be bold and fix it, but I'm not sure how. So, to sum up:

main page > categories > music (cat) > music genres (cat) > Classical music (cat) > Musical eras (cat) > Early music (cat) > Baroque music (cat) Makemi 00:40, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

I looked at the categories you mentioned, and I think the problem is this: is baroque really a "genre" in the same way, say, prog rock is? I think of baroque as a period and a style, but not as a genre in the modern sense. In fact, I think that if I saw "baroque" in the genre category, I would assume it was some sort of neo-baroque thing. Would it be too nitpicky to have the very first category split be "contemporary genres" vs "classical genres"? You would then browse like this: music > classical eras/styles/genres (pick a word) > baroque, early music, classical....etc. I'm not a music theorist, so research or an expert can fine-tune the categories, but I think that might be a good solution. Then it's just a matter of re-categorizing some things, and that's simple. Cantara 04:03, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

In order to answer your question I read a rather long article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which in a rather technical way states that basically, Baroque music is even more firmly a genre than prog-rock is, due to the interaction between composer, performer, and audience, and other works within the "genre". Genre could more specifically refer to a specific type of piece, such as "Chamber sonata" or "Guitar solo", but I see a much closer parallel between prog rock and baroque music, than between prog rock and chamber sonata, but that could be argued.

I would not have a huge problem with putting the various "early music" genres under "Classical music genres", but "classical" music can refer to the art musics of a huge number of countries, so it would need to include those cats as well. Makemi 04:34, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Here's some resources for checking out the notability of an artist or band;

• Discogs - User contributed db, covers many genres, generally impartial but information can be pov on occasion, good for electronic music and details of connections between artists/bands/producers.
• All Music Guide - 'Expert' written content (900~ editors), covers many genres, used in some point-of-sale systems in record shops/websites, gui a bit stuffy.
• Last.fm - User contributed listning stats, covers many genres, good for notability although very occasional conflicts when artists/bands have the same name.
• freedb - User contributed CDDB db, only for track listings, generally used by software for playing/ripping cds but has a search on their site
• MusicBrainz - An 'open content music encyclopedia', used by some more advanced playing/ripping software, allows searches on website.
• The DJ List - Listings site for electronic dance music DJs, basic info but still handy on occasion.

[edit] Dance music

I'd like to bring up something which I think needs considerable clarification: the connection between dance music and electronic music. (There's also the Electronic Dance article, but people are proposing merging it into electronic music altogether.)

What we have currently are Category:Dance music and Category:Electronic music, and some of the contents of the former almost certainly fits into the latter — house, techno, trance and the like are often bunched into the label of "dance music", but that isn't really a category that's been integrated under the genre system here. (See dance music and dance-pop, for example, which don't have genreboxes.) "Dance" is too broad a term because it encompasses some of electronic music and some of pop music. However, a lot of articles (such as those using Template:Album infobox, some instance of which I was responsible for) link to the dance music article when discussing electronic dance music, even though half of that article does not apply to electronic dance music.

What I'm proposing, basically, is a clear division between traditional dance music and electronic dance music, since they don't really connect to each other. Expand the article more on both sides, or split it altogether. Integrate items in Category:Dance music into Category:Electronic music. Meanwhile, I think the Electronic Dance article could be expanded so that it can be the primary article linked to in the context of electronic dance music.

Apologies if I'm not being too specific here. I'm not any kind of expert on the subjects in question, but I know enough to see that there is a clear distinction that needs to be addressed. –Unint 04:31, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

The Indie music project has been inactive for over a year, although if you feel I should set up a notice anyway let me know. I felt a more all-encompassing project is needed given the nature of alternative/indie rock. Also, there's already a Metal Wikiproject and in the slight hope someone might someday create a Punk Wikiproject to address that genre separately, this project focuses on the usage of "alternative" in the traditional genre sense; that is, the alternative/underground/indie music movement that emerged from the punk movement in the 1980s and continues to this day. I've read that one of the attributes of a good article is the inclusion of samples from representative songs or compositions in a genre. This makes sense. However, the medium of choice for Wikipedia is an odd little "mystery medium" called OGG. I don't have the slightest idea on how to convert MP3 to OGG and how to edit the files once converted. Any pointers to tips on how to do this on a Macintosh would be greatly appreciated. Peter G Werner 08:08, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the links - I found a program called Audacity that I can use on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, the program is far from intuitive, so I haven't figured out how to include such things as fade-ins and fade-outs for a 30-second sample (the pre-programmed fade-in and fade out commands take a full 30 seconds). I've created one sound sample for the Ambient industrial article, and I'll create more as I get the hang of Audacity.

One more question - what's the recommended file size for a 30-second sample? I set my defaults for 48Mhz and a high-quality sample rate, but this creates 30-second files that are about 1.6 Mb, and I get the feeling that's a bit large. Peter G Werner 18:27, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello, Im recently contributing to some articles relevant to electronic, ambient and "new age" genres of music and related artists. I am noticing that many misunderstandings among editors are arising, becouse of a lack of a correct method of cathegorizing. Maybe to some it will seem as 'experimental', or perhaps some musicologists already give it for granted: I suggest to use a method (and some templates) in order to classify artists, music (or any artistic) work, tracks, albums, according to this simple scheme----->

Context, Content, Style, Techniques

Finally, a sort of common agreement should be reached in this matter: anyone can use any adjective to describe music, and some adjectives can also become commonly used, but that doesnt mean that we have a new genre of music only becouse a given adjective describes the mood of a group of artists or works. The problem runs deeper: There are styles, eras, and genres to be dealt with, and peolpe here don't even attempt to keep these kategories apart. Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. [edit] A Blues Wikiproject

I think the Blues is well-deserving of its own Wikiproject. It's odd that it doesn't have one. I want to start the Wikiproject with other similar-minded Wikipedians so we can clean up the current Blues article and add more articles about relevent Bluesmen. It has to be remembered that many Bluesmen may seem irrelevent to Wikipedia's standards due to the "standards" of the time in which they lived/recorded. That is, many of them were simply used as ways for record companies to make extra cash from race records in the African American market. Many of them didn't live into the Folk Revival of the 1960s, during which some of them were "rediscovered". The Blues as a genre requires serious attention by Wikipedia, and a Wikiproject is the best way of doing that. Any takers? This article and its subgenres, spin-offs, etc. need extensive revisions and reworking. Whoever has written the article Rumba, an afro Cuban form of music based on drumming and chants, has got it confused with Rhumba a 1950s Cuban American form of jazz that is not the same thing, (Check this to confirm). The article Rumba therefore mixes the two in a way that is too difficult to extract on first glance. It needs to be rectified fast because its a major error on the part of wikipedia. [edit] Ballad and Ballad (music) -- Req for input

After visiting the article Ballad and finding it really inadequate in terms of the use of the term in contemporary musical contexts, I decided to create a new article, currently called Ballad (music), & add links in the "Ballad" article and the disambig page. I realize the "Ballad" article itself deals mostly with music, but it's a bit broader, and the definition of the term has strayed a long way from its medieval and renaissance roots. I think the lists of songs in the original article demonstrate massive confusion over definitions (see my comment at Talk:Ballad). I'm not married to the article title as it stands, though.

I'd appreciate other editors' input/help with:

1. rating/improving the new article,
2. how to reconcile/clarify the various "Ballad" articles & the disambig page,
3. possibly editing some links from the original to the new article, and
4. deciding where ballad should link by default.

The structure of Category:Albums by genre, Category:Musical groups by genre, Category:Songs by genre, etc., should essentially be identical to Category:Music genres, correct? I don't think one needs a complete list of every genre before you start such an effort. Just some thought into how these categories interrelate, and a note at the top of each category about that relationship with a reminder to the effect of what I stated above. There is an edit war going on at Visual kei - so I thought I would bring the information here. The argument is "does Visual Kei" count as a genre? The japanese wiki page says so, and divides it up into several sub genres: コテヴィジュ系, (Kotekei - like Early Dir en Grey, Basier, Phantasmagoria), お洒落系（オサレ系）(Oshare Kei - like Baroque, Antic Cafe, Ayabie), コテオサ (Koteosa - like Vidoll, 12012), 黒服系 (Kurofuku kei - like LUNA SEA、BUCK-TICK、ZI:KILL, Kuroyume), and ソフトヴィジュアル系 (Soft Visual Kei - like SIAM SHADE, GLAY, SOPHIA, Janne Da Arc, and Sid). Now the problem with the Japanese wiki page is it is not sourced.

I have provided two sources that list Visual as a musical "genre" - even the New York Times is not acceptable. Therefore I will provide all these articles that state Visual Kei is a Genre:

Hi. I've been watching over Eurodance for a while, and basically smoothing out contributions made by many IP editors all around the world. However there is one part of the article that is constantly being changed, which is the popularity section of the infobox. People keep adding and removing countries from the top, medium, and low popularity tiers. So I've come to ask you all, how do you handle this issue in your own articles? In theory a reliable source could settle the matter for good, but how would we get a source rating the popularity of a music genre across the 300 countries in the world? Just wondering... why does Arena rock have a genre box?? It's one of those "umbrella terms" like "extreme metal" that are not a genre... just a 'term'. But somewhere along the way, someone made a mistake and added a genre box. This is not the only "genre" mistake within Wikipedia. Wiki is overflowing with a hundred of these errors. There is a huge edit war going on in Gwen Stefani related articles. A user User:Gwenspride08 and 86.29.241.91 are constantly changing the genres. Me and some other editors have continuously reverted the edits on the basis that the original genres hav been sourced from the critical reception sections. But this user mentions some other genre and even provides certain sources for them.

My query is:-

There are thousands of sources on the net who think that the particular song in of some or the other genre. Are we supposed to mention all those genres. Its a huge edit war. Please help. Indianescence (talk) 17:06, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I have sorted out the problem through talking to admins on IRC. The IP has been blocked for 24 hours, and the User has been put on a list, and will have an eye kept on them for 200 hours. They can't be blocked because they edited more than a day ago, and you can't block users after they have stopped vandalising. However, if they do vandalise then they will be blocked.
