[edit] Open for business!

This project is online as of 15:06, 7 February 2006 (UTC)! I'd like to thank all of the signers (you know who you are!) for helping to get this thing off the ground! With that said I'm gonna go to bed soon. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 15:06, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Tsk tsk, where's your commitment? ;) Heh, with that said I'm going out in half an hour... Satan's Rubber Duck 18:02, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Starter...

OK, to start with I've done 65daysofstatic (it's the first CD in my personal collection) and their two albums (plus the Stumble.Stop.Repeat EP). I've left the singles alone as they need infoboxes, and I'd rather add them at the same time but don't have time right now (I'll do them tomorrow, free day from uni). I think we need to have a list somewhere of artists/albums that we've 'tagged' perhaps.

A thought. What should be done if the album appears multiple times on MusicBrainz? Add a link on WP to the MB album with the same tracklisting, and then add links to WP to all the MB albums? (For example, The Corrs' In Blue - it references many international varients.) Or would we add something like * In the US: {{musicbrainz album|id=US version|name=In Blue)) (new line) * In South America: {{musicbrainz album|id=SA version|name=In Blue}} to the external links? Satan's Rubber Duck 18:50, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

So the tracks are different on each edition? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:33, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
In some cases, yes, radically different. Often times though it's just a few extra bonus tracks. The way that MB sorts them is to have a seperate album for each slight difference. So, your thoughts? Satan's Rubber Duck 11:24, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] fortnight tagging

Ok, what I'm thinking is that we should set up some sort of fortnight tagging system. We select a category and spend the next week or two going through and tagging it. There will of course be a page to track our progress. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 05:12, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

I've set up something basic at Wikipedia:WikiProject MusicBrainz/Linking focus. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 05:49, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
That sounds good. I have a question and a suggestion. First, I suggest that while we are adding the MB template we should also add the Last.fm template and the Discogs template. It doesn't take much more effort since we're in there editing links anyway. Second, some bands have multiple releases of an album that have extra songs, or songs in a different order. How would we link those when both are referenced in the article? Here's an example. — Mperry 17:43, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
I would say that our primary focus is MusicBrainz, but you should do whatever you feel you should do for the article. Oftentimes I do various copyedits at the same time. As far as the scope of the project as it currently is, it's fine whether you do so or not. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:04, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Userbox deleted

The undeletion debate for {{User:UBX/MusicBrainz}} is here. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 05:08, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

  • CyberSkull, this deletion should be brought up on WP:AN/I. — Mperry 06:49, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Ok. Anything I need to do to bring it up? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:29, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Yes, because this is exactly what you need to be doing ... wasting admins' time on WP:ANI. You've already got a hearing at DRV, that's good enough. --Cyde Weys 07:32, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

There has been no consensus or admin action, so I have recreated it. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:43, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I forgot to mention that I reccomend that project members use {{User WikiProject MusicBrainz}}. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 06:12, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Is this MB user template available for international wikipedians also? If so, how about to link them somehow? That for example russian, german or whatever users could find it quickly and use it. BTW you can count me to the Participants. ;) --Schika 01:31, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
I just did one for german users, more info at the template talk page. --Schika 05:10, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Logo

What happened to the logo? It's linking to the right place but not displaying. Mperry 17:24, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

looks like it was deleted. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 03:36, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

we should probably update the icon with the new one (as shown in picard) ~ ZaphodBeeblebrox 11:54, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Where are we

MusicBrainz is a wonderful music database. I'm personally more into databases than music, so I tend to see parallels to Wikipedia:IMDb (linking Wikipedia to the film database) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (lists of works) (making Wikipedia into a works database) and the more recent Wikipedia:Persondata (making Wikipedia into a people database), rather than the formal parent WikiProject Music. On the technical side, there are lots of old (failed) ideas to read about on meta:category:Wikidata and meta:category:Books. -- Since my first MB appearance on April 19, 2006, I have been systematically inserting Wikipedia links into MusicBrainz, and this is a work in progress. Based on the MB database dump I have amended the list of artists with the count of albums and tracks that refer to them. Then I go from the top down, to make sure the most popular artists have Wikipedia links. As of April 30, I have covered all that have more than 550 albums+tracks. But this is still manual labour and I might need some semi-automatic tool to cover the long tail, something like the Interwiki-Link-Checker. The same statistical approach could be taken in the other direction, adding MB links to WP, and also be applied to albums. Has there ever been any limitation to how many MusicBrainz (or IMDb) links we are allowed to insert into Wikipedia? --LA2 06:45, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Library 2.0

Is MusicBrainz a Library 2.0? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Amarok

Does Amarok no longer support MB? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 22:30, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] {{MusicBrainz release}}

{{MusicBrainz album}} has now made the other album templates obsolete. It can take up to 10 discs at this time, using the same syntax. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 01:45, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh, {{MusicBrainz album}} has been moved to {{MusicBrainz release}}, along with all the redirects. Now even if you backdate an article really far, the MB link will still work! Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:34, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Important update: I've made some big changes to the code this morning, I've added ampersands at the end of the list and commented in line breaks for readability. Please let me know if anything is broken. Nothing on the talk page tests seem to break, so it looks fine for now. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 10:33, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Picard Tagger icon

Image:MusicBrainz Picard.png has been nominated for deletion at at the WikiMedia commons deletion page. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 07:41, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Weezer...

I thought it was funny that the example band, weezer, which the project page so boldly declares as a good example of a page that links back to musicbrainz, has no link to musicbrainz. --TIB (talk) 11:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

At the time that text was written there was a link. --Mperry 15:52, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project Directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council is currently in the process of developing a master directory of the existing WikiProjects to replace and update the existing Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. These WikiProjects are of vital importance in helping wikipedia achieve its goal of becoming truly encyclopedic. Please review the following pages:

  • User:Badbilltucker/Culture Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Culture Directory 2,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Philosophy and religion Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Sports Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Geographical Directory,
  • User:Badbilltucker/Geographical Directory/United States, (note: This page will be retitled to more accurately reflect its contents)
  • User:Badbilltucker/History and society directory, and
  • User:Badbilltucker/Science directory

and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope to have the existing directory replaced by the updated and corrected version of the directory above by November 1. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 21:26, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry if you tried to update it before, and the corrections were gone. I have now put the new draft in the old directory pages, so the links should work better. My apologies for any confusion this may have caused you. B2T2 00:15, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MusicBrainz=Spam?

A mod has speedily deleted an album page as spam just because of the presence of MB links.. I couldn't quite get a reason why he did it but it was something to do with the MB page bragging about the wiki page.. (i.e. "has a Wikipedia page at en: x (album) [info]") is there something I've missed here? ¬rehevkor¬ 02:06, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

It would help if you gave the name of the page that was deleted and the mod's name. --Mperry 07:17, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 15:59, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
User:Eagle_101 deleted it, the discussion with him is in his talk page, and Redeemer (album) was deleted. I managed to get it restored although it now has an AfD.. but that's not much of a problem. Someone re-added the links last night.. ¬rehevkor¬ 16:15, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I've got into trouble while adding MusicBrainz links. The editor John accused me of spaming. Was there any discussion about MB links anywhere else? The discussion can be found on my talk page. OutsideContext (talk) 20:06, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

I started a discussion about linking to MusicBrainz. Would be nice to get some support. OutsideContext (talk) 21:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Project MathExchange

Isn't this article a bit similar to this one?--SidiLemine 16:47, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Uh, no.--Mperry 18:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
OK, sorry to disturb. I'll go now. And probably never come back. Have a nice WikiProject.--SidiLemine 19:24, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 17:44, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Link searches

Use this search to look for pages linking to MB directly. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:15, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

This is another good search to run. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
OK, we have 2025 links to MB, and only roughly 100 or so are incorrect. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 00:51, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
