[edit] primate resource?!

The box says "an attempt at creating a standardized, informative, comprehensive and easy-to-use primate resource" -- I think we should delete "primate", unless someone has radically reworked mammalian taxonomy. (I have no idea about infoboxes and templates so I won't try and fix this myself.) -- Danny Yee 22:22, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

Whoops! My bad.... I copied the template from the Primate one, and missed that part of the change. All fixed now! :) - UtherSRG (talk) 23:00, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What should I do to help

I will creat articles for the Australian Marsupials, but my grammer is up th S*** so everytimme I do an Article I will put it on UtherSRG talk page. Is there anything else that is in urgent attention? Enlil Ninlil 04:56, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Diprotodontia and Thylacoleonidae

Does anyone ave any good sauces for these 2 families of extinct marsupial either online or printed? Thankyou Enlil Ninlil 09:41, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Steropodon and Kollikodon taxonomy

Could someone look at these articles? They are at minimum poorly written from verifiability standpoint - I personally cannot comprehend how from piece of a jaw and a set of teeth one can derive the breeding method. Type of food - yes, ok but for me milk and laying of eggs goes way too far as a conclusion. Obviously I am not a paleontologist myself but (AFAIK) Wikipedia should be understandable to ordinary people :-O -- Goldie (tell me) 20:00, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the problem is. Clearly enough of the jaw fragment is present for both of these taxa so that the jaw and teeth can clearly be assigned as a platypus-like monotreme due to extreme similarities (synapomorphies) with Obdurodon and Ornithorhynchus. As such, the most logical conclusion is that these animals were both egg-laying and milk producing. --Aranae 22:33, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
I still am not convinced completely, as tasmanian wolf and the common wolf for example have a lot in common despite belonging to different taxa. However what you provided is much better than no reasoning at all, there was no information how big the jaw is and what it looked like :-) If it is not your personal conclusion (against WP:NOR) it only needs to go in the article with a proper reference (to a scientist drawing the conclusion). -- Goldie (tell me) 08:28, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 23:52, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wildlife Barnstar

There is currently a barnstar proposal at Wikipedia:Barnstar and award proposals/New Proposals#Wildlife Barnstar for a barnstar which would be available for use for this project. Please feel free to visit the page and make any comments you see fit. Badbilltucker 15:33, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed Veterinary medicine project

There is now a proposed project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Veterinary Medicine to deal with matters of veterinary medicine, a subject which currently has disproportionately low content in wikipedia. Any wikipedia editors who have an interest in working on content related to the subject are encouraged to indicate as much there. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:14, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Topic:Paleontology

Hello at Wikiversity there is a disipline in development on palaeontology that needs help. The courses could help with te development of articles on wikipedia so it is a long term program. Interested people can go to this URL: http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Topic:Paleontology#Content_summary Thanks for reading Enlil Ninlil 03:06, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 17:34, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Monotreme eggs information required

I have these last weeks requested in the talk pages of the following articles, Egg (biology) and monotremes, more information about monotreme eggs and images of them. I believe that there isn't very much information about this. I would like to know futher about the characteristics of these eggs, the phisiological differences between monotreme eggs and other eggs, like reptiles, birds or amphibius. I have heard that they are "rubbery" (?). Do they need to be kept warm (?) I would appretiate any information... --Francisco Valverde 19:41, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Here is some information on the egg of the platypuss http://www.platypus.asn.au/ look under matters of life and death. Enlil Ninlil 03:49, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, at least it's something. But aren't there any images of the eggs?--Francisco Valverde 08:21, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Some more information but no pictures http://www.biology.iastate.edu/intop/1Australia/04papers/CromerMonotrRepro.htm More technical as well. Enlil Ninlil 08:47, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I'm a scientist, maybe

But you don't have to listen to me. Anyway, I'm starting a research project in the field of Marsupial immunomes. So I'll likely be adding some content to Marsupial pages I find lacking (and then find what's lacking). I've added a bit already to why oncological researchers like to give this little beastie cancers and then cut them up. Don't worry I'm not killing anything this year (for research purposes anyway). Hope I don't tread on anyones toes.--ZayZayEM 13:30, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:TOL template

I'm working on a proposal to subsume all the WP:TOL project banners into a single one. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life/Template union proposal and its talk page. Circeus 19:22, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Macropod hybrids

Hi. I've created the Macropod hybrids page, which falls under your WikiProject. Maybe you guys could check it out, fix anything you see fit? - Abbott75 07:13, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

I will help if I have time, but never heard of them before. Enlil Ninlil 07:49, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Animals project proposal

I think it's both a pity and somewhat illogical that we have no animal WikiProject despite the fact that there are over 20 projects that are basically its daughters. There are also other projects that could emerge from it in the future, such as one on animal behavior. The project would provide a central place for people from all animal projects to talk, a central set of guidelines for articles on animals and zoology, and an assessment system for articles related to animals. If you are interested in creating such a project please visit Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of life#Animals project to discuss. Richard001 08:58, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

The following projects would come under the parentage of this project:

[edit] Names based on Old-World mammals

Are we for or against names that are based on pretty old Euro-centric classifications, ones that basically call marsupial species "marsupial-"insert superficially similar European animal here". Such as "marsupial mouse", "rat-kangaroo", "marsupial squirrel" (I've read in regards to phascogales, quoll etc. --ZayZayEM 02:24, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm for using whichever names are most official. And that would mean whatever's in Mammal Species of the World (3rd ed. 2005). - UtherSRG (talk) 09:54, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm checking, and I don't see it there. I am going to try and reduce usage of such nomenclature. As far as I am aware, terminology like native polecat (quoll), and marsupial mouse/rat (which can refer to over 50 species of Dasyurids, in several genuses) is archaic and not used by reliable literature except in an archaic sense. Even my 1940s texts mention that they aren't exactly the best to use.--ZayZayEM 13:52, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed merger to WikiProject Mammals

I was thinking that this project might be willing to try to utilize the banner of the Mammals project for assessment. To do this, some sort of "merger" of the projects would be required. For the purposes of centralized discussion, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mammals#Proposed merger with WikiProject Monotremes and Marsupials. Thank you. John Carter 17:03, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposed change to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (fauna)

There is a current proposal to change an animal-related naming convention, which directly effects the the Manual of Style guideline, and the naming conventions policy. If you are interested, your input would be appreciated. Justin chat 06:32, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo requests

I note that this project's template doesn't handle |needs-photo=yes requests. The mammal one does, but it seems pointless to include that template as well just to get the desired effect. The question is whether this project should have its own photo requests category, or whether such requests should just go in Category:Mammal articles needing photos? Richard001 (talk) 04:02, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Assessment

If the members of the project wish to use it, the Template:Mammal, the project banner for WikiProject Mammals, now has been set up to allow for separate assessments for this project as well, although not all the categories have yet been created. If the members of this project would want to use it, I could create the relevant categories. You can see the banner in use at User talk:John Carter/Mammals. John Carter (talk) 23:12, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

How is that different from Template:MammalTalk? - UtherSRG (talk) 23:45, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
It isn't, actually; the talk page just shows what the banner looks like in use. John Carter (talk) 23:57, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
LOL! Ok. Go ahead and redirect Template:MaMTalk to one of the two. I'd prefer if the final destination were Template:MammalTalk. - UtherSRG (talk) 02:05, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
And by that I mean, the comppleted template should be at Template:MammalTalk. All others should point to it. It looks like there is supposed to be some code that recognizes if the article is in a subproject. Please make sure that this project is iincluded, as well as the Cetacean and the Primate Wikiprojects. - UtherSRG (talk) 01:51, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
I've changed all of the monotreme/marsupial articles to Template:Mammal. There are now categories with all marsupial/monotreme articles and their categories. Frickeg (talk) 22:42, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Excellent. John, could you make sure that template:Mammal work properly for Primates, calling out the primate class and importance? - UtherSRG (talk) 23:13, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Primates has been added. The existing template can have Template:MammalTalk or anything else turned into a redirect to it, so that using either name will get the desired results. John Carter (talk) 00:52, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
It is added, but it is incorrect. When used, it assigns the article to mammal categoriees, not primate categories. - UtherSRG (talk) 03:14, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
