[edit] Metalworking entrance

I have started to make a more general overview of metalworking. This page jumped into a particular portion of metalworking. There is some good information on the page and I will use it. However, I will try to give a more global overview of the field of metalworking.

I welcome feedback. I already had to correct a few things that were just a bit off.

One thing that is needed that I don't know how to do yet is a disambiguation page for DRAWING. The internal link goes to what you'd expect, drawing pictures. I need a disambiguation page that offers the current link and a new one to a new page on FORMING that will have as a topic DRAWING. I'll eventually figure it out but if somebody knows how to set up that shell or better yet author the content too, please have at it. Begs (talk) 05:55, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Metalworking - make into a nice pretty introduction page.

Metalworking is in need of some major working. This page needs to be the portal/spring board into metalworking, but not huge in size. The woodworking page is a good example as it gives a quick history and overview without getting too bogged down.

The existing breakdown of...

  • 1 Cutters
  • 2 Hand tools
  • 3 Machine tools
  • 4 Other
  • 5 Techniques

just needs to be padded out with a sentence per wikilink. The section headings will be refined as it expands, "Other" is definetely temporary! — Graibeardtalk 02:17, 1 September 2005 (UTC)

There could be an overview page that describes what is covered by the metalworking topic and what is not. The topics below could be a start, each is then an article of its own. Joe1011010 21:36, 6 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Hand tools - origin and use of hand tools and the smithy / forge
  • Machine tools - the individual Lathes, Milling machines, etc. Origin and development and what they were used for.
  • Sheet metal tools - guillotines, punches and bending presses.
  • Welding and joining - sheet metal and heavier
  • Casting - many forms of moulding
  • NC and CNC machines
  • Robots and automated machining lines
  • Metallurgy (linked to but not included in this project - is a technology topic)
I just put up a very partial draft of what a main page might look like... mostly just cut+paste from the introductions to other articles. (although a couple of the ones I put together might be a start for the introduction to future overview articles)... Wikipedia:WikiProject Metalworking/Main page is the current draft. Is this idea good, or should we do something different? Bushytails 05:44, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
I thought I had replied to this (Joe1011010) from earlier today, looks like I couldn't have saved it. Dual monitors and tabbed browsing isn't always the answer I guess?
I like it. Just enough text as an intro, obvious, as in easily found (to me - see below) links to the sub cats (although marking out doesn't fit the cats? - but I do like that image, it's a nice set), and navigation aids to all the articles under cat:metalworking. Lots of nice :-) images to catch the eye. It all looks good to me!
I'd also convert the headings into wikilinks to the article {main page}, it makes doubly sure the reader can find the navigation aids; they are obvious to us but maybe not to the casual reader. — Graibeard 06:45, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
I figure the main page ought to have marking out... I'm thinking a read of the main page should give a general overview of metalworking, and the initial planning/marking/etc step is an important one. Probably measuring tools would be a separate, later section, even though there's some overlap in tools. Bushytails 05:15, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
Good point actually. I just pushed the template to the top to see how it looks, seeing it's the main page we can get away with it, it should be okay and it adds without overwhelming (besides it pays to advertise the project). Probably should make sure jewellery is reasonably prominent as well, as shiny things attract. :) — Graibeard 06:24, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
