[edit] Er...Hello.
Hi! I'm new to wikipedia (In terms of being a user, that is), and was wondering if I could join the task force! I'm not sure if I have to apply, or if I just begin working on things for the task force. Thanks! Theman98 (talk) 16:09, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Durial321
I've just put the article CaptainVindaloo t c e 01:08, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
up for A7 speedy. I really don't think an article about that awful incident is a good idea really. It's unverifiable and a vandal magnet at least. Sorry to any editors upset by this.- At least that got dealt with quickly - • The Giant Puffin • 12:06, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, the creator, Xiaoxiaoman9 (talk • contribs), seemed to have put a fair amount of effort into it, WP:V concerns aside. Damn shame. He seems rather upset about it. Sometimes, the WP:N rules can be really ham-fisted. :-( If it had some reliable sources, I would have speedy merged it into RuneScape instead. CaptainVindaloo t c e 17:22, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, but this sort of thing is not very sources accross the internet. Maybe references will tuen up over time, so it can at least be mentioned in the main article - • The Giant Puffin • 12:36, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RuneScape welcome template
I'm planning on creating a new template designed to welcome new users whose first contributions are to RuneScape-related articles. It would be based off of Template:Welcome and would simply have a few extra links and a few added messages. This would be my first attempt at making a template, so any help is much appreciated. The template will be under the name Template:Rswelcome. Pyrospirit Talk Contribs 21:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've moved it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Massively multiplayer online games/RuneScape Task Force/RuneScape welcome. You will still use to place the template on a user talk page, since it redirects there. Pyrospirit Talk Contribs 14:18, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- Nice one. I've been appending bespoke messages to welcome2 up to now. CaptainVindaloo t c e 14:57, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Newsletter
The main project is attempting to get together a quarterly newsletter and I was hoping for some help from this task force. I am hoping to get a section in it for the RS task force. The newsletter page is available at WP:MMO/OR/NEWS (please don't get it confused with WP:MMO/NEWS, our general news page). Any help is appreciated! If you do help, please sign your name in the contributing section. Thanks! Greeves (talk • contribs • reviews) 01:33, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fairuse rationales in images
We really need to make sure that all fairuse images in articles are sourced and have fairuse rationales. Check out Category:RuneScape Images. CaptainVindaloo t c e 01:44, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] RuneScape as GA!
I recently nominated RuneScape as a good article which failed, although the points the reviewer brought up have been fixed and thus the article has now passed! Congrats to anyone who helped! Greeves (talk • contribs • reviews) 18:05, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yay! Finally a GA! *does insane dance of general happiness* (Several minutes later...) *still doing dance* Pyrospirit Flames Fire 04:36, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- Pyro, calm down. Still, this is great. Now, on to FA! Pyro's sane side 04:36, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it's been a good couple of days. RuneScape a GA. AntiVandalBot is working again, too. What do we do now then? RuneScape to Featured Article? Improve the subpages? Heh, i'm beginning to think we'll be able to get Gods to GA lately. Pay more attention to Andrew Gower and Jagex? CaptainVindaloo t c e 21:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Gods to GA? It'll be a while before that happens. I'd say we should work toward FA for the main article now. Pyrospirit Flames Fire 23:20, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Formatting of citations
I found an interesting format for citations used by the article Magic: The Gathering that makes the wiki markup much easier to read in areas with lots of citations. Using a passage from the RuneScape article, here's an example of how it works:
Current format:
The isometric view was replaced by a mixture of both three- dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released to the public as a beta version on 4 January 2001, and was originally operated from their parents' house in Nottingham.
New way:
The isometric view was replaced by a mixture of both three- dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released to the public as a beta version on 4 January 2001, and was originally operated from their parents' house in Nottingham.
Like it? It's easier to read. Pyrospirit Flames Fire 19:49, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- It is much easier to read.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 23:19, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- Aye, it is. Takes up a lot of room in the edit window though. :-/ CaptainVindaloo t c e 00:57, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Here's another way we could do it:
The isometric view was replaced by a mixture of both three- dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released to the public as a beta version on 4 January 2001, and was originally operated from their parents' house in Nottingham.
-
- This way simply has the entire reference on a different line than the text around it. It would work to separate references from the rest of the text, but it wouldn't break up the reference template as nicely.
- However, here's what the second method would look like if I removed unused parameters:
The isometric view was replaced by a mixture of both three- dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released to the public as a beta version on 4 January 2001, and was originally operated from their parents' house in Nottingham.
-
- It now looks quite a bit cleaner and doesn't take up much space at all. Actually, we should probably remove all unused parameters from the citation templates whether we reformat them like this or not.
- So, what does everyone think? Should we keep it the way it is, put each parameter on a separate line, or put the whole reference on a separate line? (I personally support separate lines for each parameter after removing unused parameters, as in the last example.) Pyrospirit Flames Fire 13:35, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I like the last example. Most of the references do make the text hard to read, making it difficult for potential editors to contribute. We need to make sure that editing Wikipedia is as simple as possible.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 23:30, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] RuneScape Wiki recruitment
Should we try to recruit some experienced RuneScape players from the RuneScape wiki and get them to join our Task Force? We currently encourage people who add fancruft to go there, so why not encourage experienced players from there to come here?
Possible benefits of this include greater project participation, a wider perspective on articles covered by our task force, and obscure but valuable information from game experts. Another useful advantage of this is that the editors from the RuneScape wiki would already be familiar with at least basic wiki markup.
The downside might be that RuneScape players unfamiliar with the differences between our policies and the RuneScape wiki's might add more fancruft at first. Despite this, I think it would be a good idea to recruit editors from the RuneScape wiki.
I'd like some input on whether we should do this or not. If we do, we'll post a thread in their Tavern forum about it (I think that's the right forum). Pyrospirit Shiny! 21:10, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Password scamming
Today, Zanesword (talk · contribs · logs · block user · block log) tried the old "send your username and password to this yahoo email address! Its official Jagex! Honest!" scam. You can't possibly run a password scam in good faith, so I'm wondering if I should really have just left him/her a test4im or just gone straight to AIV/ANI? We need to set some kind of precedent or proper course of action when this happens. CaptainVindaloo t c e 21:19, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- I think that the uw-test4im was appropriate, sinceuw-test4im redirects to uw-vandalism4im by the way. I don't think an immediate AIV would be necessary, although AN/I might be appropriate. I still think that we should give them 1 or 2 warnings, not from a standard UW template series, but from a custom template message. Yes, I like that idea better, and we don't want to immediately block them either, since they might actually make some useful edits too. [edit] Image:Rds.JPG
Turns out the project logo probably is a screenshot after all. I was never too sure about that. Just to be on the safe side, I've uploaded a new GFDL version that I whipped up in five minutes using Paint. My artistic talent is comical at best, so if anyone wants to make a better replacement, please do. CaptainVindaloo t c e 14:13, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- That's much more convincing. Do you want to replace with that, or shall I? CaptainVindaloo t c e 18:20, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Portal colour scheme
Since nobody seems to have seen it yet, I've made a proposal with request for comment to change the colour scheme of Portal:RuneScape at Portal talk:RuneScape#Colour scheme. Nothing major, just aesthetics. Pastel blue doesn't seem very RuneScapey. Cheers, CaptainVindaloo t c e 21:57, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Keeping the pages clean
I think we need to be a tad more aggressive keeping cruft and gameguide material out of the subpages. Don't let it pass, revert it when you see it. Just don't use revert scripts/admin revert, provide a proper reason. If people don't want to pay any attention to our content guidelines, it's hardly our fault. CaptainVindaloo t c e 19:46, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. I've been reverting fancruft when I see it and using rsfancruft-anon very frequently. One note: the Twinkle script allows you to revert, warn, tag, and report with optional reasons, so it's just fine for reverting fancruft. Pyrospirit Shiny! 16:44, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] RuneScape discussion from Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals
- Description
- We could like update people on what is happening with runescape and help with the holiday events
- Interested Wikipedians (please add your name)
- [Elderleo]
- Comments
- They have a website to "update people on what is happening with x and help with the holiday events". It's called MySpace. This is Wikipedia, an encyclopedia. Thanks for coming out. Chris 23:59, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
- In all fairness to the individual who proposed this, the "holiday events" is something specific and a part of the Runescape culture. Jagex tends to add special items and "mini-games" to Runescape that is only available during a specific holiday season, usually Christmas and Easter, as a way to try and encourage continued interest in their games. Documenting these holiday events is an interesting aspect of this game, especially as the items tend to be unique and often can't be traded, with the exception of the very notable party hats from a Runescape anniversary event. In this case, players could only get one party hat, and none of the new players after this event could get them, causing these items to become a sort of tradable hedge against inflation within the game. These are the most expensive items in the game in player to player transactions.
- I don't know if there are enough articles related to Runescape to warrant a full Wikiproject, but there certainly are many devoted fans to the game. Wikipedia notability standards would certainly apply to most of the topics of Runescape, and it seems unlikely to significantly expand the number of articles beyond what is currently on Wikipedia. There is a Wikia wiki about Runescape that would be much more appropriate for pushing into other topical areas regarding this game, including holiday events. The Runescape Wikibook was removed as a part of the bloodbath removing all of the video game strategy guides, but the StrategyWiki does have the original Wikibooks content. --Robert Horning 21:31, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bot fixing 'Runescape' instances
You know many people forget that the 'S' is supposed to be capitalised? I'm seeing thousands of them on rogue subpage patrol. Why don't we just get a bot to correct it for us? One of the spellbots can handle it fine. CaptainVindaloo t c e 13:10, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- Good idea. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 17:05, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Communicating with new contributors who edit RuneScape pages
We should communicate in some way with most new users who edit pages under the scope of our WikiProject. Posting a welcome template, a WikiProject-specific welcome template, a fancruft message, or a user warning to every new user that edits here and hasn't yet received such information really improves communication and coordination between us long-time members of the WikiProject and the people whose first page they edit happens to be a RuneScape page. (see this page for a list of our project-specific templates)
So far, it seems I've mostly been doing this on my own, and I'd like to bring this to your attention so perhaps someone else can help with this. All I do is look for every user with a red-linked talk page in the last 50 edits to a RuneScape page, and post some message on their talk page, depending on what sort of edit they made and after a brief glance at their contribs.
However, since I've mostly "retired" from RuneScape, I may be less active in this WikiProject than before. This means that I probably won't check all the pages as often, so I won't be able to do as much of the "PR" for the WikiProject as before. If someone could help manage this, especially on the main article, I'd appreciate it. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 17:19, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] SCAR (programming language)
Does SCAR (programming language) fall under the RuneScape task force project? I was wondering if I should add the wiki project boxes and such to it (like adding to thelist of articles under the task force's scope.) Thanks, OSbornarf 00:11, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
No, I believe it does not; most people that edit the RuneScape page hate it either because they don't know how to use it or because they don't understand SCAR's partly positive impact on RuneScape's economy. Qoou.Anonimu 22:15, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- I dislike it because it's against the rules of RuneScape to use it, but that's not why it's not under the scope of this WikiProject. Although the programming language was originally developed for use in RuneScape, it's used for more than that and is not notable only for its use in RuneScape. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 21:18, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] MechScape
Has anyone had a read of Jagex recently, and noticed the bits and links about a game called MechScape? Now, normally I'd be skeptical, but this time I'm not too sure. The evidence - domain registration records, Homeworld-esque concept art on developer personal sites, etc - seems pretty solid this time. I'm not saying we should go into headless angry chicken mode and create a new featured article in the next five seconds, but we need to be prepared; when this baby is released I'll have to buy a hat to eat (with some fava beans and a nice chianti) if everyone isn't incoherent with glee, and there'll be a huge amount of upheaval in this project. Thoughts? CaptainVindaloo t c e 21:34, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
- While there is speculation and unverifiable second hand information, there are also verifiable facts. For example it is a fact that Jagex has a trademark for MechScape which covers MMORPGs. It is a fact that they have registered many domain names, some of which are the same as the domain names of RuneScape sites with the word 'rune' replaced for 'mech'. Our aim should be to stick to verifiable facts as closely as we can with full citation, and leave the rumours to website such as MechScape Central.--RS Ren 00:45, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- There is plenty of evidence that Jagex is creating something called MechScape, and considering how notable RS is, it is safe to say that this game will be notable.--Snakese 18:10, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Note: The MechScape article was nominated for deletion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/MechScape --RS Ren 10:06, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] MfD
This page and its parent (WP:WP MMO), as well as MMO's subpages, are nommed for Miscellany for deletion. See WP:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Massively multiplayer online games. This task force does not appear active, and certainly does not (really) have a large enough scope to justify its existence; however, if you wish to contest, feel free to comment at the MfD. --Izno (talk) 15:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
