Unofficial use of the FBI insignia or badge is prohibited by law under USC Title 18. Unless you can show that you have written permission from the Director of the FBI to use the logo, I suggest it be removed from all project logos to eliminate the possibility of criminal complaint and prosecution by the US Justice Department.Patchbook 00:36, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FBI insignia image controversy

It has been asserted that the use of this image is a violation of U.S. federal law. This is an extremely serious matter as it exposes the Wikimedia Foundation to possible legal action; therefore, I have removed the image while the issue is researched. Please do not revert until the issue is resolved. If it is determined that the use of the image does not violate any laws, it can be restored immediately. Thanks for cooperation in protecting the Wikimedia Foundation. --Ginkgo100 talk 21:28, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

On further thought, as this image is widely used, I have speedy deleted it at least temporarily, on the principle of WP:IAR. Please do not upload it again for the time being. I will happily undelete when and if appropriate. --Ginkgo100 talk 21:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
We have analyzed the law to the best of our ability on the main project talk page. If this law breaking is true, then how does the image on the FBI article survive? Rather confused SGGH 22:12, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
