[edit] Problem in using "locator maps" by Opera
Hello everyone, I am trying to bring forward a problem which I have faced since day 1 in wiki. I use opera for browsing and always the locator maps mysfunctions and as a result the red orb always sticks to to the top of the frame (be it mumbai/chennai or Kolkata), recently I checked with IE and the problem did not occur, so I am sure the problem is because of the browser. Can anyone solve this problem. LegalEagle 15:47, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- I use Opera too (9.02), but I don't face the problem. Don't think it is a browser problem. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:00, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
- I use opera 9.0, so what do you think the probable cause can be? LegalEagle 07:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:India annual rainfall map en.svg displaying as a blank area
Could someone find out why Image:India annual rainfall map en.svg is not displaying for me properly in article space? At Climate of India, this is what I'm seeing. How can this be fixed? Thanks. Saravask 13:39, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- Not sure why it is not rendering. Maybe someone at Village Pump-T may help. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:09, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] GIFS
This week two animated maps were promoted to featured status (See: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2007-03-20/Features and admins). Since we do have svg base maps of India, would anyone like to bell the cat in creating animated maps? I don't think it should be too difficult. =Nichalp «Talk»= 14:26, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Its not difficult to make the animations, we just need the data. Or if anyone can make the frames, i can package it into a gif -- PlaneMad|YakYak 16:12, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Map request
Hi. I need two maps drawn for two Empires. I have scanned the maps from my source books (John Keay - History of India and Goerge Moraes - Kadamba Kula, A history of ancient and medieval Karnataka). I can email these .jpf files to anyone who is willing to draw them. I can also provide full information of the source where the map came from.thanksDineshkannambadi 15:49, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] State Locator Maps
Has the state locater map for Karnataka been created yet? The status on the project's page tells me that all state location maps are complete. However, I'm not able to find the map(image) neither in Wikipedia or in Commons. --Natrajdr 04:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- Nope and wont be done unless i get a good source map to use similiar to this TN Map. Ive updated the status page -- PlaneMad|YakYak 13:25, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Some conventions for Indian Empire Maps
Some maps like kadamba are not drawn on top India locator map and also do not have capitals. Some maps like Hoyasala map have red color instead of orange color shade. Can not we follow some uniform standard for all these empire maps? Political history of medieval Karnataka and many related empires articles use these maps. mlpkr 14:43, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Capitals are a new feature. Nobody really thought of them till recently. We are using this color for red: #B00000. The orange look might be because of transparency. Shall we set the transparency to 60%? =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:29, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi mlpkr, i noticed that you've raised the issue of standardising history maps. When User Dineshknambadi first requested me to make the rashtrakuta map, i looked at previously made historical maps to see if there was any format to follow. I found that the maps using the India locator map laid emphasis on features that were irrelevent for depicting historical maps, which is why i tried to make a new template map to use for historical perposes, keeping the following in mind:
- Borders of modern India and states do not need emphasis as it did not exist in those times.
- Most kingdoms and cities were limited by rivers, so showing major rivers was a must.
- Most of the available history maps from foreign sources used conical projection and not mercator projection. So it is more suitable and convenient for the map to use conical projection.
- India locator map lays too much emphasis on the disputed regions. This is irrelevant for historicalmaps and will clash if you needed to mark an area lying in Kashmir or Arunachal. Hence a single base color for the entire map.
The colors i used however were arbitrary. I'd like to know what others think?-- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Comment A map with state boundaries gives better perspective from the present day point of view, a map with rivers gives better historical perspective. This inconsistancy was noticed in a recent FAC. A map with rivers tends to add some clutter to the map though. A capital with a dot or a star is a must but a decision has to be made which one. It only makes for more clutter to add names of other historically important locations (other than the capital) in the map. For example, the Badami Chalukyas ruled from Badami, but near by Aihole and Pattadakal were also important. The Rashtrakutas ruled from Manyakheta, but they built their finest monuments in Ellora. I suggest we stick to only the regal capital. Dineshkannambadi 23:20, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- While making history maps, we usually use source scans from books as the info is rarely available online. Due to this i feel we should duplicate the source maps using all available info so that data isnt lost, as maps over here are free versions of difficult to find maps. Theres no point in marking only the capital if we are using a map with much more info. Maybe we can have two versions of all maps, one with all the works and another to serve as a locator map with just the extent and a locator dot-- PlaneMad|YakYak 10:38, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- How about a overlay of the style used by Planemad and Mlpkr, this way we get the political present day state boundaries and the historical/rivers perspective limiting ourselves to only the major rivers etc. Then we can use a star for the capital, a dot for a limited the number of other important cities within the Empire/kingdom? We have to be careful in interpriting maps from history books. Very often (more often than not) the author overlays maps of multiple kingdoms from different time periods in history indicating important cities from different eras into one map. All this could simply be clutter providing the reader with opportunity for confusion.Dineshkannambadi 15:41, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] India_Maharashtra_locator_map.svg displaying as a blank area
does not display on the page for Maharashtra, in the Infobox. Nor does it appear on your state list. I suppose it needs a red orb at Mumbai. Can someone help with this?Fconaway 19:31, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:INDIA Tagging with TinucherianBot
TinucherianBot can automatically tag articles with {{WP India}} Banner as {{WP India|class=|importance=}} to the talk page of articles without the project banner. It can also add the workgroup paramaters like "|kerala=yes|kerala-importance=" etc ,if needed. The currently supported workgroups are Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bengal, Goa, Himachal Pradesh , Karnataka , Punjab, cities, Cinema, Literature, Protected Areas of India, History, Politics, states, Geography,Maps,Districts and Tamil.
If you need so, you need to provide me with the Categories to run the Bot. Due to some technical issues, the Bot will not run recursively to sub-categories. The requester should kindly verify that there are NO non-related articles in the category.
You may request for the bot run on my talk page... Thanks -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 06:41, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
