[edit] Past discussions
- First, an important note for everyone to remember: A few Wikipedians have gotten together to make some suggestions about how we might organize data in articles about History of India. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!
WikiProject History of India is an attempt to give detailed information on History of India. This page contains the agreed suggestions. For discussion use talk page.
[edit] Timeline of India
India as a country was never centrally ruled by any one ruler. It was an area split in many parts and ruled by their own rulers. Alexander was one of the first foreign rulers to come to India. Several great dynasties have ruled over many parts of India. Ashoka was a great ruler of India. During his period, India was united, and streched from Afghanisthan to Srilanka. After King Ashoka adopted Buddhism, the religion of Buddhism became popular and spread to many neighboring countries. The next important phase in the history of India was the formation of the Muslim dynasties, or Sultanates. The decline of Muslim rule, chief among them the Mughals, was caused by Western forces imposing colonial rule. The Portuguese, French, Dutch and finally the English arrived and imposed their rule on various Indian provinces. In various strifes, the English proved themselves victors, and ruled India for over two centuries. The Indian Independence movement, led by such great leaders as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru etc. finally forced the British to grant Independence to India in 1947. Since then, India has progressed economically, politically, and socially to become one of the major powers of the world today.
[edit] AD
- Project Started by Dhaval Faria - http://www.dhavalfaria.com/ The known history of India, based on the remanents of the Indus valley civilization dates back to times earlier than 1500BC. India-as it is known to the world derived its name from the river "Sindhu" or "the Indus" as the Greeks called it.
India is one country, which can boast of its diversity and variety than any other country.
Indian scholars have contributing and been contributing for the betterment of the world in many ways. India's gifts to the world include the Zero, the Ayurveda, the Yoga to name a few.
Indian rulers like Ashoka and the Gupta's have united the nation and have ruled vast areas which have expanded beyond the present political boundaries of India. "In terms writing a timeline on India, it is very important to include some of the more recent findings by scholars. For example, both satellite based pictures, as well as ground water samples establish the existence of Saraswathi river. Based on this finding and the timeline when it dried, scholars have suggested that the civilization be named Saraswathi Civilization and NOT Indus valley civilization. This is because, the Sindhu river was NOT a main river during the vedic period - please see "In search of the cradle of civilization" by Georg Feuerstein. This books takes the history of India to periods dating back to almost 9000 years from today. Also, the marine archeological survey of the city of Dwarka has unearthed civilization dating to 3102 BC which is considered the middle period (submerging the city of Dwarka). This too is considered post-vedic period.
It is better to look at this evidence rather than repeat the mistake made by Max Muller whose timeline as well as the theory or Aryan Invasion, have been firmly rejected by most Indologists today". There are several books that also establish the advances made by the area of Astronomy and Astrology. The siderial system of calendar used in India even today and verifiable by independent means is an important reference to note, in terms of cross checking the dates provided by most ancient scriptures. It is also important to note that India is in the process of putting out a 30 million page electronic encyclopedia that will provide a lot of information of Ayurveda and medical / bilogical facts. It is best to be aware of such developments and not write things here, that we may have to retract quickly.
The reason I would like to point this out is because, the timeline page here is starting out with Ruled by X, then Ruled by Y, then Ruled by Z, without ever going into details of a long period before this period. I hope this page will not become another site where information that has been rejected by scholars (Indologists) is repeated again.
[edit] Ancient history
This page has little mention of Indian history. Please take a look. Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 03:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, deep, I saw the article. It seems someone has been intentionally excluded Indian history. I will revamp the article. Meanwhile you can keep a check on the article, while and after I revamp it. New Rock Star 04:47, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] INCOTW and 15$
Hi, please check Wikipedia:Bounty Board - 15$ would be donated to Wikimedia trust if Akbar is brought to FA status; it is also one of the candidates for WP:INCOTW - so, please vote there as well asap. Also, some one may want to check the history of Jodhabai. --Gurubrahma 17:50, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yep. I think we should work on it. Should we have a COTW to organize our efforts. We also have to work on Lothal to get it featured. I also wanted to propose that we start the article Linguistic history of India. It can cover history from Indus Valley through Vedic and Classical Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrits, Apabhramshas, to modern Indian languages. What do you think? deeptrivia (talk) 03:49, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Top priority articles
Template:HOIOpenTasks now has a section for Top Priority articles. The current top priority articles are Lothal and Akbar based on the discussions here. Please contribute to make them featured. Also please feel free to discuss about more articles that should be our top priority. deeptrivia (talk) 04:12, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Linguistic history of India
Hi all - I started this article from the template:HOIOPenTasks, and created Category:Linguistic history of India. But I need help on its organization, since there are many articles on Indian languages with history sections spread out - and there are so many that I'm at a loss on how to organize a mother article on linguistic history. Rama's Arrow 02:23, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Politics of India
I started this project to create and expand articles related to the Indian politics. It is a child project of History of India. I hope everyone here would join that project too and contribute. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 06:59, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Postal history of India
This article can be expanded much more and can become really interesting. I've added it on open tasks. deeptrivia (talk) 17:00, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Trolling
User:Anwar saadat (same as User:212.32.80.19) has been putting about 14 templates (such as "POV", "Sensationalism", etc) on many articles related to History of India. He doesn't explain much, except claiming that these articles are "Islamophobic" and picked up from Hindutva websites. Can someone address his concerns? deeptrivia (talk) 23:14, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Indian history stub template
It's time that we build up a template for Indian History Stubs. That will help categorizing Indian history stubs and finding out the Indian history articles in need of improvement.--Dwaipayanc 15:53, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
- Sure! I think it's a good idea, please go ahead! deeptrivia (talk) 23:32, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Request
According to my knowledge and google search, the article Sakastan is almost entirely incorrect. Can somebody please take a look? Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 23:29, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lothal
Hi all - I hope you can spare the time to examine Lothal, which is now very close to FAC. I welcome your comments. Rama's Arrow 12:37, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi - please spare time to vote at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Lothal! Thanks, Rama's Arrow 13:58, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Mohenjo-daro
Please consider adding Mohenjo-daro to this Wikiproject. Also, I would like to see its name in IPA as well as local language because of the high probability that it would be miss-pronounced. As far as I know, it is pronounced: मोएनजोदडो and not मोहेनजोदारो (which unfortunately was the way it was pronounced by our school teacher).
Also, I would like to contribute to this project, but I have limited resources. If you think there's any way I can contribute to it, please let me know. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:52, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Chola Articles
Hi, I've been working on the Chola pages for a while now. My goal is to make this a featured article. I have busy working on the bio pages of various Chola morachs. Hopefully I will be able to complete creating all the relvant articles soon. I'd like to request you to review the artcles and pass on comments to me. I welcome any suggestion to improve the quality of these.
Cheers parthi 23:27, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] I need advice
I have been having great problems from someone named Satbir Singh who is bent upon proving that chandragupta maurya was iranian or punjabi on the article on him. The entire page has gone to hell with a whole essay on this filled with bogus citations and analysis on his part. Any changes that I make he simply reverts them and he refuse to take part in the talk page. I dont know how the hell to get through him or what to do. Is anyone more experienced that can help with this matter? (Blacksun 03:52, 24 March 2006 (UTC))
[edit] Shah Jahan
Can I get some viewpoint on whether the recently added sections on European allegations of Promiscuity and Incest deserve to remain part of the Shah Jahan article. --Nemonoman 07:23, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Merging Chola Empire article with Chola
I propose to merge the Chola Empire article with the more extensive Chola article.
My reasons are as follows:
- The Chola article is more coplete with information on the political as well as the cultural impact of the Cholas. It has sub articles on Chola Art, the various periods of the Chola history such as Early Cholas, Medieval Cholas etc.
- The associated bio pages on the Chola rulers are nearing completion.
- The Chola Empire article has unsupported information such as Rajendra Chola defeating Mahmud of Gazhni.
- The Chola Empire article in my opinion does not have any additional information than the Chola article
I will be merging and redirecting the Chola Empire article to Chola if I don't hear any comments regarding the need to maintain both.

[edit] Kingdoms of Ancient India
There is a whole series of articles on Kingdoms of Ancient India. They should be integrated with other Indian history related articles. deeptrivia (talk) 22:09, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Chandragupta II
Someone has decided that the Gupta King committed atrocities against the Scythians, though there is no evidence for this. The poetic hyperboles regarding the defeat of Scythian kings is perhaps the basis for this POV. If this can be termed as an atrocity this would become a manadatory section for every king in wikipedia.
[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject History of India/COTW
There are over 50 members in [[Wikipedia:WikiProject History of India, but there isn't much activity going on. Hopefully a COTW will help organize the efforts of WP:HOI members into more meaningful contributions. Any help in setting this up will be highly appreciated. deeptrivia (talk) 02:01, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ancient India stubs
There are a large number of stubs relating to ancient India. Can we have a stub category for them for better management and organisation of such pages .There are such stubs for Rome, Egypt and Greece .Category:Ancient Greece stubs Category:Ancient Rome stubs Category:Ancient Egypt stubs. Can an experienced editor create/organise one ? --Shyamsunder 21:52, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
I would like to say that I have left the project as currently I am in the process of redefining my relationship with English Wikipedia, which may take days, weeks, and even months. However, I shall continue to edit pages relating to History of India. Regards. --Bhadani 08:33, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Help needed in Indian martial arts and Indian nationalism
I started the article on Indian martial arts and it's been encountering problems. I've mentioned the official sources, kept the language encyclopedic and provided a host of books on the subject, but these guys don't seem to listen and just keep on attaching an NPOV and factual inaccuracy tag because my official citations from the Shaolin etc. don't exactly compare to their POVs, and they keep on delievering lectures on how the british were'nt too bad and how the "white people" are this and that.
Ditto for the Indian nationalism, kindly ensure that the articles are not vandalised and if anyone can turn the language in the Indian martial arts section more enclyclopedic and take it out of the NPOV and Factual accuracy categories it will be greatly appreciated. I did'nt know where else to look for help so I came in here. Thank You. Freedom skies 01:23, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Take a look
In here, [1]. He has vandalised artiles about India in every possible way,
Please keep a check on this guy someone.
And help in Indian martial arts and Indian nationalism would be well appreciated. Freedom skies 19:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WikiProject India
The following discussion is copied from WT:INB. Please respond there to keep the discussion centralised.
I think we should retire templates for the various Indian wikiprojects such as {{Wikiproject Indian districts}}, {{Wikiproject Indian cinema}}, {{Wikiproject History of India}} etc. and replace them all with {{WP India}}. It has various advantages over the others.
- We can rate the articles - the rating counts appear on the WP:IND page as we do so.
- Each of the above child projects can get exposure as the template can incorporate their names as well.
- This will guide new people and other interested readers to a centralised project page and help us recruit better for the projects.
- It will help rejuvenate the WP:IND. It has the lowest no. of members of all these projects.
These are just some thoughts. If there is agreement on this, we can start by replacing the templates on the project pages with the {{WP India}} template. -- Lost(talk) 18:26, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
