[edit] WikiProject Hong Kong: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

there are currently 13 articles in the scope of this project which are tagged with notability concerns. I have listed them here. (Note: this listing is based on a database snapshot of 12 March 2008 and may be slightly outdated.)

I would encourage members of this project to have a look at these articles, and see whether independent sources can be added, whether the articles can be merged into an article of larger scope, or possibly be deleted. Any help in cleaning up this backlog is appreciated. For further information, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Notability.

[edit] Replacing photograph

Image:SP1900 E227.jpg needs to be changed. The train is heading towards East Tim Sha Tsui, while the doors on opening on the right, in which they are supposed to open on the left. The photograph was taken from the East Tim Sha Tsui platform. Leolisa1997 (talk) 08:07, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

The aim of the photo is just to illustrate an SP1900, and issues on train direction by themselves do not justify the photo to be changed. Moreover, such issues can be explained by asserting the photo as looking southbound, and since all trains in Hong Kong (except MOS Line) run on the left, the train is moving away from the photo. Thus, the doors are opening on the left. This is further verified by the absence of TO in the cabin nearer to the photographer. --:Raphaelmak: [talk] [contribs] 09:19, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

We can't use the image from Chinese WP because that was uploaded under fair use there. Each language WP is technically seperate from each other, so we can't just take something that was uploaded specifically for Chinese WP and use it here. But one thing we can do is ask the user that scanned the image for Chinese WP to upload it here and tag it as fair use for English WP. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 23:50, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's a good idea. There some flaws on the image at Chinese Wikipedia. First, the photographer of that image shook his hand while he take the photo, which made the image appeared to be blurred. This is very interesting, because apparently nobody in the world saved a digital copy or still have a copy to be scanned. Are we allowed to use use an existing one (say the adult one), use Photoshop to modify the colour into purple and upload it as fair-use content? OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Image:KCR University station (1).jpg was nominated for deletion by me, but was kept under the reason of 'The picture being too dark is not a vaild reason for deletion'. Hi all,

I'm completing an article on the 1982 Hong Kong film Boat People. I couldn't find much information on the critical response to the film from within Hong Kong and the PRC and since I don't speak Chinese it's hard for me to find them. I would appreciate any help finding reliable sources and translations on this topic, and would also appreciate it if the article is converted to Hong Kong English. Hello! I've been going through the many MTR station pages and have had a few concerns. Though Hong Kong English can logically be understood after re-reading, I'm not sure if it presents the most universal representation of the content in the English Wikipedia. Some grammar issues and structuring varies even from standard British English. I was going to go ahead and re-phrase some parts but I fear that it might become an issue, and I don't want to become invasive since I have not contributed content (ie: Mainland users who change everything to simplified Chinese, pinyin, PRC, etc). What are your thoughts, has this been discussed before? Do you mind if I go in and rephrase sentences so it makes easier sense to American English users? .:DavuMaya:. 18:38, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

To Davumaya: True, Hong Kong English varies even from standard British English in terms of spelling. For example, in Hong Kong the word "decolourize" is used with the letter "u" (inherited from British English) but using the suffix -ize (inherited from American English) in its most common form. As for grammar, in most cases British grammar is preferred, but American and Australian grammar and style is also widely accepted. To make things worse, everyone in Hong Kong, depending on education and background, speaks a different accent of English. --Deryck C. 19:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

That is completely different. Italy and the Vatican are two completely different states. The Vatican is not part of Italy. Hong Kong is part of China. There is only one state. Take a look at Talk:London. London has its own WikiProject, so it uses the WikiProject London template. London is also part of England, so it also uses the WikiProject England template. By your logic, are you suggesting that the WikiProject England template should be removed? There are thousands of place articles like this. I suggest we keep a high level of autonomy for Hong Kong for now. Personally (personally), I'm all no's for it. But of course, we work by concensus, so we'll wait for a third comment. But frankly, the main reason for this because I've caught in a few nasty arguements around China-Taiwan status, and if we reap Hong Kong and Macau articles under the China banner, it will be one sticky mess because it will pull Taiwan in for sure. Joowwww is correct. Taiwan and Hong Kong are two totally different situation. 'One Country, Two Systems' is not applied in Taiwan. Thus, Taiwan has a 'president'. Addaick (talk) 14:08, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Re to initial topic: Because we have no specific WP guidelines to base this issue on, WP would like us to use consensus on this matter. I put my straw in that HK is part of China in the current geopolitical context based on the following. 1) Presently, HK is politically designated and recognized as part of the country of China (currently given a SAR designation). This recognition extends to most of the world following British handover. 2) HK belongs to the Cantonese diaspora and has an ethnic and underlying cultural connection that is still fairly seamless between the "mainland" and HK people. 3) Historically the area that is now HK has for the most part been under the banner of Chinese dynastic rule before the British, and considering it was taken by force warrants that we cannot suggest HK is somehow an independent state of its own accord. But it of course does not mean we call it Hong Kong, China, no, that would be like saying New York, USA. Because HK as an encyclopedic article exists solely on its own merits as a city with an individually unique history. But we also must recognize that the 'China' article is not just about the current government, but about a civilization, and in WP terms, this would place HK most definitely under that project. .:DavuMaya:. 20:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I've recently joined the project and am working on some actors' articles. What do other project members feel is the importance or priority of adding redirects for individuals' "other names" like is seen for actor Anthony Wong? For instance, the article Nicholas Tse is not retrieved if a user searches for "Tse Ting-Fung." Should redirects for other common forms of an individuals' name be created early on in article creation/editing? If so, how does one determine which redirects are most appropriate, or should they be created for Tse Ting-Fung, Tse Ting-fung, Tse Ting Fung, Tse Tingfung, etc. Also, if I read the policy on Chinese naming conventions correctly, should the above name be listed within the article as "Tse Tingfung" or "Tse Ting-fung," depending on which romanization system used? How does one choose which romanization system to use? This is an area with with I'm not familiar at all. Thank you for your time! Yes, I agree the search system on wikipedia is too unforgiving on spelling mistakes/variations. But there should be no need to go create chinese-romanization redirects because either you know the artist by thier chinese or english names. If you know thier english name, you will search them here exactly. If you know their chinese names, you will search for the chinese wikipedia and perhaps redirect to the english one. 08:45, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to get a slap on the wrist from WP but in the case of redirects and notoriety, I would actually do a Google search on each name variation to see which spellings gain the most hits and use those as redirects. Remember, we don't have to be everyone's friend, if they're too lazy to spell it right, then too bad, they can just do a WP search for keywords. .:DavuMaya:. 20:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

The user Halahala123 have been continously added this really biased section onto the page Joey Yung. I already knew this was another one of those Joey-Yung haters as soon as I saw the title of the section "related criminal incidences". If she was never even charged, how can she be a criminal? There are other words such as "arrested" when it's more like asked for questioning. He even bolded her name throughout the section. I have reverted twice, and figured he's not going to stop, and even got warned by an admin. I have never met someone so stubborn yet. I don't really know how to handle this. Any comments? Thanks! The South China Morning Post has articles which refer to the arrest of Joey Yung (and Albert Yeung of EEG), and "arrest" does have a specific meaning and is, I would argue, notable. Maybe the section heading could have been better worded, but the fact that she has been arrested at least once and questioned on other occasions is, in my opinion, notable. Wikipedia shouldstrive to be as full as possible in its coverage of people deemed notable for inclusion. Wiki is not an extension of the EEG's cantopop marketing machine, yet it seems by Dengero's own admission on his page that this is exactly his mission here on Wikipedia. I'm all in for it if you wrote that section using that source. The fact that Halahala123 used some rdm Andy Lau fan site as a reference fustrated me. And please, don't class me along with the random editors who blindly add things about thier favourite artists. "Tycoon Albert Yeung Sau-shing has had plenty of high-profile brushes with the law - as victim, suspect and litigant. He is chairman of the vast Emperor Group, which employs more than 5,000 people in entertainment, property, finance and catering. He was kidnapped in Central in April 1989, has been arrested, and has had his business properties vandalised many times. Police have raided a disco at his Emperor Byron Hotel in Happy Valley more than once. His family also has been in the spotlight. His son, Gilbert, was accused of assaulting a banker in Lan Kwai Fong in 1997 and was bound over after the prosecution offered no evidence against him. In 2000, Gilbert Yeung was caught in possession of drugs at a rave party and fined $7,000. Early this year his sexual exploits made the cover of Eastweek magazine, owned by his father. Teen heart-throbs connected to the Yeung empire include Nicholas Tse Ting-fung, Joey Yung Cho-yee and Edison Chen Koon-hei, who also have been in the limelight over skirmishes with authorities in the past year. Tse, whose record label EGG is owned by Albert Yeung, was arrested for allegedly asking a driver from his company to take the blame for crashing his $2 million Ferrari. The driver, Shing Kwok-ting, was jailed for four months for perverting the course of justice. Tse has not been charged. Last August, Albert Yeung was apprehended by detectives, who boarded a British Airways flight from London, in connection with a case of alleged assault on disc jockey and actor Leung Sze-ho. His arrest prompted wild scenes outside the Kowloon West regional crime unit headquarters, where about 100 reporters and photographers were waiting for his release. He and Joey Yung, also arrested over the same incident, were later freed without charge, but not before launching six lawsuits against the media. Albert Yeung was acquitted of alleged criminal intimidation and false imprisonment in 1995 after all five prosecution witnesses said they could not recall details of the alleged offences."

Even my roommates were asking me about Edison Chen and I'm like that happened MONTHS ago and you haven't even seen one movie with him in it! User:Joowwww had recently turned the Hong Konger article to a redirect to Demographics of Hong Kong. Initially the contents were not good enough per the 2007 Afd. However, the article have since been re-discussed and improved with better references. It is fair to keep the article now I think. Benjwong (talk) 19:41, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help with Hong Kong places and their disambiguation.

Greetings! There is a proposal to organize a bot in order to create thousands upon thousands (if not eventually -- a million) articles related to villages/towns/cities from around the world. Hong Kong is also a part of this and there is a list of places from Hong Kong found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places/hong kong. Currently however, before the project can begin, the list of places need to be checked for disambiguation. That is, there are some blue links already created and they need to be checked to ensure that they are in fact already the created cityand not a disambiguation page. This is needed as the bot will not be able to create the place if there is already a blue link and if its a disambiguation page, then that place (be it a city, village or town) will miss out. That is why I ask anyone here from this project who has some time or knowledge of Hong Kong to have a look and help if they want in any way they can. As a side note, there is also a discussion going on here at the village pump: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/FritzpollBot and you are more than welcome to state your views on it. Does anyone have any objection to me proposing addition of manhua to the scope of WikiProject Comics' world comics work group? I can't find any cohesive group working on manhua in any wikiproject. Tell me something. How come the word "neighborhood" is not used when describing "areas" under "districts." For example Kowloon > Yau Tsim Mong "district" > Tsim Saa Tsui "area" However Tsim Saa Tsui has its own "District Council" below the Yau Tsim Mong District Council according to its website.

區 I know can be translated into multiple meanings but area sounds such a generic term to use. Do official government documents state "area" as a term for what we in USA/UK consider neighborhoods/boroughs? .:DavuMaya:. 22:35, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
