[edit] Primary Article

Well obviously it should be Hertfordshire. I think what we need to establish what type of elements need to be added to bring the article to the highest standard of FA. If we are classifying the importance scale it will need to be of Top importance.

The points we need to bring out are a clear and defined history, why and how Hertford is the capital of Hertfordshire, some clear pictures to support the important areas. Highlight the key moments in the history of Hertfordshire.

So what do the rest of you think? Good idea? O ye, and we will probably need to do all that citation stuff, with references, ect. Govvy 12:27, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] People from Categories

A discussion has been opened at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London#Category:People from Ealing by district about upmerging local area categories for People from... into current local government boundaries only. This could have implications across the whole of England if carried through. Your are invited to join the discussion. The proposer is planning a massive merge by 22nd June if no objections are received. --Regan123 11:26, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Project list

Is there a list of articles already included in the project? Not the various categories, such as "Towns of Hertfordshire" or "Villages of Hertfordshire". In other projects, the inclusion of the project banner will add an article, automatically. Folks at 137 18:45, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

As of now, you can see the articles covered so far under Category:WikiProject Hertfordshire articles. Simply south 22:00, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Guidelines

Hello WikiProject Hertfordshire participants,

Just a line trying to promote some trans-WikiProject guidelines for settlement articles. WP:UKCITIES are guidelines from the "mother" WP:UKGEO project based on those at WP:CITIES (A "global" WikiProject for settlements that is US driven). They have been employed by a number of articles to standardise content, obtain a consistent style and approach and drive them towards good and featured article status with considerable success, and are so far also endorssed by Wikipedia:WikiProject Greater Manchester, Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire, Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield, amongst others.

Not too many users (or indeed projects) are aware of the guidelines, and thought it may be helpful if all the county WikiProjects had a link to them to help them get the results they want.

As it stands, the project mainspace has an empty section entitled "Guidelines" - it may be suitable if {{main|WP:UKCITIES}} was affixed to that section. Hope that helps, Jza84 02:14, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

This hasn't generated much of a response; I'll be bold. Other county WikiProjects have since adopted this approach too (e.g. WP:Somerset and WP:KENT), so hopefully it's not contentious in anyway. -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:52, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] tech query

In Category:WikiProject Hertfordshire articles, Barnet is listed under B, Bovingdon is under T. Why - they are both Talk pages. Folks at 137 (talk) 10:43, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting that error. I will just sort it out. {{PAGENAME}} is missing from the category so i will just adjust this on the template. Simply south (talk) 13:58, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
OK, it seems to have worked for Bovingdon. Give it time and the servers should catch up (so i have been told on a previous similar problem, which seemed to happen). Simply south (talk) 14:07, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Importance ratings

Are there criteria specific to Herts for the various ratings? Looking at the lists, rating seems rather subjective, eg Hertfordshire GAA in "high" and Elstree Studios in "low". There will always be differences, but at least criteria would help. Some projects canvass reasons for ratings. Folks at 137 (talk) 17:15, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Here is what it currently is, as standard (from the assessment page).
Need: The article's priority or importance, regardless of its quality
Top Subject is a must-have for a print encyclopaedia
High Subject contributes a depth of knowledge
Mid Subject fills in more minor details
Low The subject is mainly of specialist interest
None Unassessed, importance still to be determined

Simply south (talk) 19:58, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, it's too vague - that's why I asked for "criteria specific to Herts" (although probably criteria common to all counties would be better). Also, some of those reflect quality not importance: an article about a subject could meet some of those criteria without reflecting its importance. I assume that criteria are to be measured purely within Herts not within all of Wiki. How about:
Top Subject is fundamental to Herts or of significant international interest
High Subject is of significant national interest and/ or impact
Mid Subject is of interest/ impact beyond its local area
Low The subject is of interest within its local area or subject
None Unassessed, importance still to be determined
At least as a starter. Folks at 137 (talk) 21:56, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

I think it would be more helpful to define "local" in this regard. Perhaps "local authority district" would be suitable, as it breaks the County down into ten similar size areas? MikeHobday (talk) 22:06, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

That may be a good start, although LAs are not "ten similar size areas" - at least not geographically. I had envisaged a smaller area. The concept is: in, say Hemel, it might be that Adeyfield School would be of "low" importance to WPHERTS (its interest area is probably just Hemel town), whereas Collett School might be "mid" as its a specialist school known in a wider area (perhaps even nationally). I don't think that criteria can be hard and fast (this is Wiki!) - they are more of a guidance, IMO; I'm trying to move things on a bit. Folks at 137 (talk) 23:17, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Some towns are given high importance due to their importace to the county in some ways e.g. history (like Letchworth, Stevenage and St Albans). Simply south (talk) 11:20, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Boldly amended as per Folks at 137 - see[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by MikeHobday (talkcontribs) 16:31, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok. I'll assess and reassess a few articles, report them here with reasons. So much for keeping me head below the parapet. More comments please; this is work in progress. Folks at 137 (talk) 22:46, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
I've assessed and reassessed some as below:
Article old rating new rating argument
Abbots Langley mid low the village is not significant outside its locality; its areas of fame are covered elsewhere; relative size not considered
New River (England) mid significant to East Herts and London; a turning point in the capital's public health - could be "high"
Robert Runcie high as Archbish of Canterbury, he had a high national profile, but internationally only significant within the Anglican Church's hierarchy
Rothamsted top a pioneering institution with an international reputation and impact
Pope Adrian IV top high the only English Pope - also a significant person of his day within the RC Church
Longdean School low a local comp: only significant within Hemel Hempstead and the immediate locality
Paul Boateng high high a senior Cabinet minister - and the first black onne - also has a profile within South Africa
Watford high high a dominant commercial and population centre in its region, recognised as such by Herts CC
I think the "high" criteria needs to be extended to include topics of major importance to the county. Comments? Folks at 137 (talk) 13:00, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I suppose this has been said before but anything that has significance nationally or internationally but has also particularly influenced or been involved or highly associated etc with Hertfordshire. So yes.
I am not sure on the pope being top, but yes high. Simply south (talk) 13:08, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Happy with "high" (at least someone has reacted!). Article updated. Folks at 137 (talk) 13:07, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Lea Valley Park

(Crossposted to WP:LONDON)
This discussion on my talkpage has set me thinking: can anyone think of any good reason not to convert the assorted stubs on the sections of Lea Valley Park into sections of a single article? This wouldn't lose any content, but would give an overview of the park and the order in which the sections run, which the current separate stubs fail to do. (See my corralling of disparate stubs & creation of missing sections on A1 road and A215 road for the sort of thing I have in mind.) iridescent 22:51, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Herts location map

Could someone tell me how to use the Hertfordshire map with red location dot. There's an example at Hemel Hempstead. Does it just get called in by "infobox UK place" and what mechanism places the red dot? Folks at 137 (talk) 20:25, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Primary schools

There's a consensus, which I agree with, that primary schools are not "notable" enough to have separate articles. I'v prposed here that groups of schools may be notable. Comments welcome. Folks at 137 (talk) 10:17, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Photographs of courts

If any Hertfordshire-based photographers could take snaps of courts in their neck of the woods (e.g. St Albans Crown & County Courts, Watford County Court, local magistrates courts) and add them to commons:Category:Courthouses in the United Kingdom, the photographs would be very much appreciated for List of courts in England and Wales and List of county courts in England and Wales. I'm also working on a list of closed courts, so photographs of former court buildings would be useful too (e.g. Hemel Hempstead County Court - does anyone have a source for the story that the court was burnt down by the court manager? I know I've seen it somewhere...). Thanks, BencherliteTalk 22:18, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Hertfordshire

Just to let you know, a list regarding the sites of special scientific interest in Hertfordshire was earlier promoted to featured list status. Rudget (review) 11:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Museums in Hertfordshire

Could I ask for some help accessing local knowledge, from members of this wikiproject, on the behalf of the new WikiProject Museums? We are currently trying to identify articles within the Museum projects scope (& develop guidelines to help improve them etc). There is a List of museums in Hertfordshire (many are links to the museums web site at present). Could you take a look at the list for your local area and see if any are missing or create articles for any red links. Could you also add the new project banner "{{WikiProject Museums}}" to the Talk pages of the articles, so that we can identify those in need of work etc. Any help appreciated &, if anyone is interested you are welcome to join the project or discuss Museum related articles on the Project Talk Page.— Rod talk 14:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
